Minor setback...the shop is in the basement which is also where the hot water heater that blew out today while I was at work happens to also sit...in the mad rush to do everything about replacing it, my stock with coat #6 on it got taken down and laid on the work bench...it also wasn't totally dry because when i got home from work and my father was showing me everything, I had to pry it off the rubber bench mat.
I spent an hour wet sanding with 1500 and 2000 grit and I think I have all the imprints out. I also had to reapply the stain on the checkering...tomorrow I'll cross my fingers and start reapplying the oil coat. First coat should tell me if I got the marks out, if not, I'll be stripping and starting from scratch....

OUCH !!! I hate when stuff like that happens. The memory is hard to escape. I hope this won't be the case for you. It was looking so good. You might want to just start over anyhow. One little blemish left over is gonna eat your lunch everytime you see it even if no one else notices. That's just been my experience.
Good Luck man.

I hate it when that happens. At least you know that problem shouldn't interrupt your work for another 20+ years.

Same here. The one we have now is about 6 or 7 years old, probably die before long. The one before it lasted about 7 years.
Sorry Steve!

Ever get that little itch that says things are just going to smooth and right? Been having it since i started but the tank was, according to my dad, just about 22 years old, so I'd say he got his money's worth.
I got about 4 hours until the 2nd side checkering dries enough to try the first new coat of oil...until now the stain on the checkering was the hardest part standing with a small artist brush and painting all the rosewood stain in by hand but I'm not settling,,,if that first coat doesn't look the way I'm after, I'll start again.
And besides, I got time and a dozen other guns I can shoot, one of which is a brand new PCP

Exactly, they are well-engineered now and last very closely to just over the warranty. In my new-construction neighborhood, we had about 80% of them all go within 6 months of each other, starting about 3 months after the 7-year warranty ended. The rest went within 6 months of that. That's "dang" good engineering.

Wow, that was a lucky break! Man that stock looks so darned beeyooteeful I'd be afraid to use the rifle anymore, probably just mount it on the wall in a glass case.
Outstanding work Steve!
