Hey everyone, I'm new to this site and may have some crazy questions as I learn so please hang in there with me! I went to Crosman's website to download the parts diagram for the Walmart .22 Benji Titan GP. It said there was no parts diagram available and that parts were not available from Crosman. Does anyone know who they are available from and where I can find a diagram?
Now down to the mod question. In the absense of the Benji diagram, I looked at the Crosman Titan GP diagram. It shows part BT9M22-00-2 "Back Spring Guide" and part BT9M22-00-7 "Plain Plate". It looks like they both put pre-load on the spring. My first question is, does preload have anything to do with velocity, if so does more preload increase or reduce velocity. Second, if it increases velocity, could stacking more or a thicker custom made Plain Plate increase velocity.
I also looked at a diagram for the NP XL. It has what appears to be a shorter Back Spring Guide, a Plain Plate, and an adjust washer. First, I wonder if the NP XL Back Spring Guide could be used in the Titan to reduce pre-load and increase or reduce velocity, even if it had to be machined a little to make it fit. Second question is just the opposite, could the Titan GP Back Spring Guide be used in the NP XL to increase or reduce velocity.
I know velocity isn't everything, but I've learned from powder burners that increasing or deceasing velocity can have a significant positive impact on accuracy. Besides, you know us newbies are always looking for something to file on!I would appreciate any input on these items.

Increased pre-load does not change spring rate . It will only increase the initial amount of effort needed to cock the rifle.
Reducing the pre-load...... That could be fun to see what happens.

I'm no expert on Crosman NP rifles but:
When used in a air rifle, most gas springs are running near their limits as far as compression and extension. Giving up some of the travel in an effort to increase preload may prevent the piston from latching when cocked. And even if you were successful, the increase in power would be insignificant with a gas spring because:
The preload in a gas spring is achieved by nitrogen pressure in the spring. The rise in pressure is only about 30% over the entire stroke of the gas spring. Even if you were able to add 1/2 inch of preload, the average force will increase by only 3 or 4 percent. If you really have that much extra spring travel to waste on preload, you would be much better off looking for ways to increase the stroke in order to fully utilize the particular gas springs potential..
A 1/2 inch increase in preload would net you about a 4% increase in power.
A 1/2 increase in stroke would net you about a 13% increase in power.
The proper way to increase the preload in a gas spring gun is to increase the pressure in the gas spring. Since it cost nothing to use a higher pressure when the rifle is manufactured, I'm fairly certain that the manufacturer used what they believed to be the optimum preload or pressure in the particular rifle. If you require a higher fpe at the possible expense of a smooth firing cycle, than your optimum may be different.
