P-rod Question
«

November 23, 2015, 12:08:50 AM »
How accurate is the pressure gauge on the P-rod? I've got a 4500 psi 90 ci Ninja carbon fiber tank with a 3000 psi output regulator. I've already filled my P-rod 10 times and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get about 8-10 more fills from the tank. I follow the instructions and fill the gun slowly each time, but the gauge on the gun never reads higher than about 2650-2700 psi after each fill. I open the valve all the way very gradually, but it never goes higher than 2700 psi. Should I be concerned that the Ninja regulator is not working right? Do you think the gauge on the gun is not accurate? According to the customer support guy from Ninja, the regulator has a range of 2900 +/- 100, so that would mean the lowest it should be is 2800 and the highest it should be is 3000. Is the fill pressure I'm describing normal for the 3000 psi regulated output? The Ninja setup I have is the same exact setup that PA markets as their Air Venturi tank and regulator.
Also, what is the best fill pressure for a P-rod with the factory settings? I don't have a crony, so I can't verify my results. From 2700 psi down to about 1700 psi (according to gauge on gun), I'm getting 3 full magazines of shots (24 shots) before I need to refill, and even on the third magazine, it will still go through both sides of a steel soup can at 30 yards.

The gauges on Crosman rifles are infamously inaccurate. I would trust the gauge on the Ninja fill station.
As to the optimal fill pressure for a P-rod with factory settings, you're probably not far from it but no two are exactly the same. I assume you don't have access to a chronograph, in which case what you can do is shoot 3 magazines and see how much the elevation varies. At 30 yards, the amount of vertical stringing may not be enough to matter, but if you were to shoot at, say, 50 yards the picture may change quite a bit.

I have my P-rod set to 6 turns HS from full ccw, and 1 turn throw from full ccw and I've found the best starting fill pressure is about 2750psi give or take. I usually pump to a bit over 2800psi and lose a bit when I bleed the line so I end up where I want to be. I get 24 consistent shots around 650fps with H&N FTT 14.66's.

I have the ninja 90ci setup. It use to put out 2900 but now is only doing 2700. I got my setup from Mac1 and had a large gauge installed on it so I'm confident in the psi readings.

X2 on what Jason said.
Just a FYI, before you start turning on the hammer spring, and the hammer stroke screws, write down where they were set from at the factory.
From what I understand, Each gun is set up using a flow meter.
So each guns starting point may be slightly different.
Then, if your "tune" doesn't work like you expected, you can go back to your guns factory settings, and work from there.

Thanks for all the advice and info. My tank still has over 3000 psi in it and my gun always shows the same pressure after I fill it, which is very close to 2700 psi, even when the tank pressure was 4500. From what you guys said, it sounds like 2700 is a good starting pressure anyway, but someone in this discussion suggested the gauges on our guns are notoriously inaccurate, so maybe my starting pressure is actually higher. I'm going to see if the guy from the paintball store where I bought it can measure the output pressure for me. Do you know if they can do that measurement? I will probably eventually buy a chrony, but for now I'm just trying to make sure I don't have a defective output regulator on my tank. The guy who sold me the tank and regulator is really nice and said he would give me half price refills ($3) because I bought the tank from him. I'm getting hundreds of shots from the tank, so that's pretty cheap.
EDIT: The Ninja tank fills my P-rod EXTREMELY FAST. I try very hard to open the valve slowly, but it cracks open just slightly and fills the gun in about 1.5 seconds. It fills it much quicker than I can react to slow the flow and do a precise fill up to say 2000 psi (If I had a Discovery that required a lower fill pressure). Is this normal for a Ninja Tank/regulator? If I want to fill a different gun to a lower pressure, I assume I would need to buy another regulator tuned to the lower pressure, right?

I fill one of my guns with it, stopping at 2000psi. It just takes practice to get it right. I sometimes will overfill by a 100 but it will not hurt that particular gun. I may change mine to a Jubilee valve soon.

Examples of how different each pistol is I'll throw out my current tune for a brand new stock Prod.
Hammer spring: 7, Hammer throw: 1
2500psi-1200psi
550-614 ft/s (peak velocity ~ 2000psi)
Count: 48 (or 6 mags)
pellet: 14.3gr hollow points by crossman
