Xl1100 woes...

Greetings all! Iv had my xl1100 for a little over a year, and i love the thing,... but lately it has been grouping like you know what!! I use to pick off shotgun shells from 50 yds with this thing all day, now im getting about 1-1/2" groups @25yds with random flyers that are several inches out. A little background on the gun, i shoot CPHP's for plinking, and for anything requiring accuracy, JSB 14.3gr (jumbo express) diablo exacts exclusively through my gun. I have shot probably about 3,000 or 3,500 rds through it. Im getting about 890ish +/-4fps with CPHP's and speeds are very consistent. soon as i got it, I looked at the action underneath and noticed one of the stock screws was touching the linkage a bit. I hacked about 1mm off the bolt so its clearing now, I did a tuna trigger upgrade, (love that thing!!), also utilizing the artillery hold, etc, Loc-tite the screws and scope. Im not completely new to airgunning; however i couldnt figure out why in the heck its grouping so crappy.....? I took the advice of some others on this forum and tried to clean the barrel. I used some string and an old tshirt for patches and ran 1 with goo-gone, then 5 dry patches untill no more crud came out. Well now its grouping WORSE!! im getting about 3" groups now at 25yds. Like i said, when it was new, it was shooting great after the break-in. I was pulling ragged holes and clover leafs at 25yds, and now its all over the place. I tried trading scopes when i was at the range yesterday hoping maybe it was a shot out scope. No luck, still shooting like shy-zah! The old centerpoint scope shoots smaller then dime sized groups at 25 on my walther g22. Im lost, im almost ready to give up on this gun guys, i try to take it rabbit hunting and anything past 20 yds is a crapshoot now. Please fellas, any advice? I think im well out of warranty with crossman/benj by now. Im pretty mechanically inclined, should i take it all apart and look for anything in specific? Thanks guy!

Not an expert, but I would say the seal needs replacing, maybe the barrel itself ? they are only 15 bucks

Try shooting through a chrony again to compare to previous results. If you see a signifigant difference then I would blame the seal. If you dont, then I would reclean the barrel and start over with the break in. From what you've said, it dont sound like a scope issue. Good luck and keep us posted.

Brewerja, it could be a couple things giving you your headache. If the chrony says your velocity is where it should be with a fairly tight spread then your seals are probably fine. Scopes do sometimes fail and that sure can cause accuracy to go to heck. My suspicions are your recent barrel cleaning. You say things were fine but since you cleaned the barrel things have gone down hill. I've seen this happen before. Seems that aggressive barrel cleaning often requires very many shots to re season the bore and get accuracy back to where it was. My advice is to continue to shoot until the barrel is re-seasoned.This may mean anywhere from 10-100 shots.Make sure all screws(stock, mounts rings) are properly secure.Do a Q-tip test on the barrel crown if you can get to it.Should be under the shroud. Sometimes barrel cleaning can damage the crown wrecking accuracy. If all that checks out OK, set up your target close...say 15yds. Shoot at least 50 shots trying to get a real tight group. If seasoning will cure the problem then you will see it happen before your eyes as you shoot. If after 50 shots there is no improvement then you really have nothing to lose by cleaning the barrel again and starting over. Sometimes I say sometimes, more aggressive barrel cleaning is needed and there may be a build up of crud where the shroud meets the actual barrel.Be mentally prepared to shoot a lot to get to the bottom of this problem.

Welcome to GTA. Glad you found us and joined up. The XL is a great powerhouse airgun in my book. The folks have given you some good advice. I would add one other possibility. With the barrel closed, see if there is any significant side to side movement. They use a plastic pivot washer that can wear out. There's several posts here about replacing those with brass washers to eliminate the play and get accuracy back. Our own Gene is having some machined and may have them ready to sell now.
I have had a couple of guns that needed the front mounting bolts shaved. I went ahead and cut about 3 threads off both of them. Just be sure neither are close to the linkage. You only need a thread or two showing anyway.
After the cleaning you did, get a tin of cheap ammo at Wal-Mart and just sling lead through it to season the barrel and re-lead it. No since in using up your good stuff to season the barrel.
Let us know on the side to side movement. And during your tightening of the bolts/screws I hope you included the breach pivot bolt.
Again welcome and....
Happy Shooting!!!!

Everyone has given good advice, and yes I would check the plastic breech washers. If however all that fails to solve your issues I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend that you clean the barrel, no really clean it(carefully) with a brass brush and a rod. Crosman CPHP's (and boxed Premiers, too) are harder lead than most and can build up or "lead" the barrel affecting accuracy(especially when push to 900 fps or more). And no amount of cloth patches and Goo-Gone gets it out. Field Target shooters found this out and that's why many started lubing their pellets to slow the leading. I would not recommend you lube the pellets in your trail, as too much could cause unwanted dieseling. And hey, what have you got to loose, if you've tried everything else and the accuracy is still in the toilet? You going to make bad accuracy a little worse? Or you might solve your problem too.

I'll second what Nathan (HNT5) said. After you've checked off what the others have suggested, if it still groups poorly, try a good, thorough cleaning.
When my XL1100 starts to "ungroup" I give it a good cleaning. And I use a new, good quality brass brush with a brass, swivel cleaning rod. Pulling patches through with Goo Gone may work for some, but I think with the power of the XL the lead really gets forced in and can build up.
And yes, it doesn't get it's groups back until I've re-seasoned the barrel with about 30-40 pellets. Plus, I only re-season with the pellets it shoots best, not whatever is laying around.

Just wishing you a Big Welcome to the GTA forum and family. Everyone above have given you excellent advice....nothing more to add except (Which I didn't see mentioned) to make sure the scope mount bolts are nice and tight. And oh yeah.....when an airgun gets broken it.....sometimes it likes a different diet of pellets. I've had air rifles that 1st liked Crosman Hunting, then CPHP, then Beeman FTS and then finally RWS Hollowpoint pellets.

Thanks a lot for all the info gents. I took my XL1100 and my powder burner to the range yesterday(project 2000 in La Mesa, CA) and after i got about 60 or 70 rounds through her, she cleaned up a ton. I was shooting off a bench at 25 yds, laying my gun on a puffy balled up jacket. I went from 3" groups of 5 shots at 25yds,... to being able to fit all 10 shots smaller then a dime at 25 yds. I think shes ready for some varmint blasting now! I am convinced that the barrel cleaning and (RE-SEASONING) was the trick to it. after the initial barrel cleaning, i couldnt hit a darn thing, now im stacking JSB, ill bet i can pulverize asprin at 25-35 yds with no problems now. Im going to drag my gun into work tomorrow, (I work at a range at camp pendleton) and get a good 40yd zero on my baby and maybe splatter some ground squirells in the morning. Again, thanks guys, im very thankful to have found GTA and all of the great members on here. Take it easy guys and thanks again!

Welcome to the best place on the net and I'm Happy you got her fixed up.I'd still get a set of washers though as the Brass ones are way better.
Thanks,

Glad to see it's back to shooting tight groups.
There's a limit to how much cleaning just pulling a patch through can do for lead build-up. Especially if the patch isn't fitted over the proper sized brass jag, it can't 'scrub' the rifling.
I've found that for excessive, hard lead build up, it takes a good brass brush, only used on a brass swivel rod from the breach end, to get lead out without using strong cleaners. And I'm not for using strong cleaners for just lead build-up because they take out too much lead making it take even longer to re-season the barrel.
