Title: crosman 1377: 24" barrel, HUGE difference!!
Post by: randomgunner on June 20, 2011, 09:17:20 PM
ever since i put the extended barrel on my 1377, i have taken out 5  house sparrows in a matter of weeks. that may not sound very exiteing to some of you, but i hunt very rarely, because most of my time is spent fishing. the accuracy is amazing, although i have to raise the elevation notch. 2 of the kills were 10 yards or more. today, my nephew and my best friend were hunting for some house sparrows. i shot one and winged it, had to go into some bushes loaded with stinging nettle to flush it out so my nephew could shoot it. my best friend shot one in the head at 10 yards first shot, with the sights not adjusted.
furthermore, i have decided to put a aftermarket breech on it and replaces the plastic parts with steel.
*muzzle brake
*steel breech
*brass safety
*red dot
so, any suggestions?

sky is the limit. i think most all of the aftermarket stuff is good be it aluminum or steel. i would go with whatever struck my fancy. i would choose red dot over sights or scope, and some fancy wood grips and a nice trigger. add in a nice flat top piston & valve & pump pin (i would recommend ac customs for these) ;D ;D

i would suggest a flat top piston and power modded vavle...will increase up to 100 FPS in most case's... pump arm pins ..extended bolt probe... and lots more,
 have fun....  tezzfla

why would i need a new pin? i do find myself having to adjust it every 200 shots.

one of the reasons for a solid pin also makes modding easier
check these out. i use the mellon pin kit

the pin just makes it easier to take apart with out having to beat the roll pin out. and it looks good too ;D and it's cheap.

Keeps the rollpin from eating your tube, or possibly damaging the pump arm and tube due to working itself out. Once the roll pin is removed it will never hold like it did from the factory. You also get rid of the "wiggle" and get smoother pumping.

Air strippers well do as they say they strip the air. Suppose to help deflect the air to avoid barrel rise from the air escaping the barrel. My HB17 will do this at 7 pumps can feel it kick and rise. It also is suppose to keep the exiting air from behind the pellet from affecting it. It does this by directing it outwards from the barrels center. Some have vents to direct the "extra" air out the top to compensate for rise.

NOW I dunno how much that helps on these guns. A 24" barrel uses up most of that air behind the pellet. The near 80% drop in report from the gun is a example of this. ( I have one in 177 with a 24") I noticed this on my gun in the 5+ pump sound levels. 2~4 you mostly hear the hammer, springs, and the pellet impact.

A break is often just a weight and barrel protector and some "meat" to stick a forward sight pin in. The weight is to balance the gun and avoid rise as well. Id use one mostly to balance the gun and protect the crown.

Id go piviot pin, trigger foolery (this can be done yourself and a hdw store) Then get a metal band to get rid of the sloppy 2289 band, flat top then shrouds, grips, breaks, etc. Really depends on your wants of looks or utility. But anything that add durability of the gun I would stick on the top of the list.

Since you seem to be plinking HOSPS Id do anything that will help accuracy over power and bling. Might want to look at a scope or some nice irons vs a reddot unless your looking at a higher end unit with a smaller than 4moa dot. (most of these are in the $100 and up range.  I do like my 4moa dot for close in stuff however, but I wouldnt attempt a HOSP at 15yrds or so since the bird will then be about half the size of the general 4moa dot.

On Air Strippers, from what I have read on various forums (Green, Yellow, and Crosman Pistol Owners Forum), only provide an improvement on crosman pistols when using a sub 10inch barrel.

On a 1377 there doesn't seem to be much point beyond the purdy factor.

Again, that is just from my reading and not direct experience.

. . . add in a nice flat top piston & valve & pump pin (i would recommend ac customs for these) ;D ;D

Ditto.  I use Alejandro's brass piston with a FT valve, definite improvement :)

I use solid steel rivets from Ace Hardware for my pump-pivot pins.  They're like 0.20 cents each, and they slide right in with no machining or reaming to the pump lever holes.  It's a slip fit, and they are easy to remove when the pump arm is opened, but they hold tight when the arm is closed.  Makes it super easy to work on.

A proper Air Stripper has large vents on the sides (usually two) and an adjustable tapered insert which is as tight a fit to the pellet as practical (ie 1/4" or less on a .22 cal) and with a very shallow taper to "strip" the airflow away from the pellet and direct it out the sides.... The insert SHOULD be adjustable in position as the gap between the muzzle and the insert is critical in tuning for accuracy.... which is the sole purpose of an Air Stripper....

Air Strippers MUST be accurately aligned with the bore so that the space around the pellet is completely symmetrical.... The idea is to remove as much as possible of the air blast from having any possible effect on the pellet skirt once it exits the muzzle.... TKO make an air stripper and it functions completely differently from the TKO brake.... You can find photos at the bottom of their webpage....

http://www.tko22.com/ (http://www.tko22.com/)

While they claim that it "slightly reduces the report", that usually results from just re-directing the air blast to the sides.... The main purpose (some would say the only purpose) is to allow you to improve the accuracy by tuning it to your particular rifle and pellet combination.... They are often used by FT shooters.... who claim that a good air Stripper can decrease group size significantly.... or increase it if not adjusted right!.... Often the best gap is only about the length of the pellet and can be critical within 0.010"....

madkoifish: im not just shooting hosps, im taking squirrel, crows, starlings, feral pidgeons. i also noticed the drop in sound. i thought i was loosing power at first, but after my friend blew out a sparrows brains, i went NOPE thats not it! i do not find anything wrong with the barrel band, besides it being plastic.

what are air strippers for?

i think the air stripper displaces the air to the sides of the barrel insted of outwards.i also have a 17" barrel on my 1322 with a ldc and it keeps my neighbors happy..

here's the 1377 with a kill i just got on a female house sparrow.
ive decided that i will get the grip  frame, the pump tube, and MAYBE the barrel nickel plated. then i will get the steel breech and some red grips. ill get muzzle brake with rails for mounting lasers. and with a fiber optic on top of it. im in the process of getting another one, so i can nickel plate that one and convert it to .22 with a 14inch barrel.

skip the red-dot and buy a leapers 3-9x32 bugbuster scope, its an absolute perfect scope for 13xx carbines, a barrel shroud so its quiet, skip the air stripper as there is no recoil to these guns at all, check out ac customs web page, quality stuff, i have every mod done to my gun you can get, oh and btw, i have shot hundreds of birds with mine....

Plastic barrel band will shift back and forth in the tube thus moving your barrel up and down then your poi. I have not seem much though really. But Id prefer more metal in there since with the plastic you only have the walls of the tube supporting all that pumping force at that hinge point. A brass or alum pivot would add more meat in that area. '

Look almost like you got one of the "brown" barrels. Crosman has been shipping 2 different finishes apparently the brown ones are a better manufacture than the blued/black ones.

I would do that steel or brass alum etc breech before doing any bling. It is a huge improvement over the plastic bits. I now have a 4X16 40 ao scope on mine 5yds vs the bugs 3yards but my indoor range is 6~12yards. SO imagine a 2" target filling your objective @10 yards. :D Bug might be better due to weight. Probably in the looks department too. hah

If your going for larger items power will be on your list, also use heavy pellets. More foot lbs. But reliability and accuracy are important for the small guys. For me I want the ability too shoot their beaks off if need be. My gun how it is now can take mourning doves at about 30yards cleanly. No fly off just swing off the wire and straight down. Only visual clue is sometimes I get feather bomb. Crows and treerats I have taken but not too cleanly. The tral np in 22 dispatched em well but that has the neighbors screaming FIREARMS to the cops. Someone with more exp shooting those with these guns in 177 can chime in.

Keeps the rollpin from eating your tube, or possibly damaging the pump arm and tube due to working itself out. Once the roll pin is removed it will never hold like it did from the factory. You also get rid of the "wiggle" and get smoother pumping.

yup Im using some sort of nickle plated brass rod drilled out and tapped for now myself, very very temp since the pump arm will eat it some time soon. Holding up fairly well atm but drill rod or something like you listed would work too. I had to shim it though to get rid of the wobble. The wobble is not the grip but the hinge point perpendicular to the tube. The space between the wall of the bands inner fork and the pump arm. I have never seen one of these guns without this wobble unless it was shimmed. But either way point is once that roll pin has been knocked out it will never stay put again. I knocked mine out as smoothly as possible, it would shift after 5 pumps. Friend has one that he left loose and now has ovals for hinge holes.

you know what, that's the first thing i noticed with my barrel. i think it had a reddish type finish.

I disagree.  The Bugbusters have a notoriously short eye-relief.

This one is .22 caliber and a fun shooter. Haven't done any power mods yet, but thinking I might.

OK, if im going to put a scope on it, it will have to be a scope that obviously has long eye relief. i was looking at the nc star compact scopes. my pumping method has me placing the stock on my hip, and using both my hands to clamp the barrel and pump arm toghether. it is faster and retains most of my strengh for shooting. however, if i put a regular scope on, it will get in the way, and most likely be loosend.
airgun andy: i like that stock! and forearm, where'd you get it?

I made the stock and forearm from built-up layers of plywood. Makes for easy inletting.
I know what you mean about the long eye relief scope. I like to hold mine with one hand over the receiver (breach) and the other on the forearm. Work it kind of like a pair of hedge clipping shears. I use an NC-Star 2-7x32 pistol on my Benjamin 392 pump rifle. A little 2 to 3 power pistol scope might fit the 1377 better.
