Title: barrel droop!!!!!!
Post by: grey.hairs on March 31, 2011, 12:04:16 AM
Hello to all.  I'm not sure where to post this but a Ruger Air Hawk is a clone of an RWS 34 anyway I think that's German.  It shoots about 4 inches below POA at 6 feet.  Did a tune and lube and am checking it out.  Put a level on it and the bubble is about 1/8" past the bubble center.  I know I saw a message about barrel droop but can't find it
now.  Dang am I getting that old?.

Those type of rifles have some barrel droop their designed that way to be used with the open sights, but you can straightn it if you want? you can do it the old fashion way by taking the action out of the stock and smack it a few times on nice padded soild work bench or theirs other ways to do it you could put it in a nice padded vice and bend it with a pipe with some good padding around the barrel so not to scratch it up theirs lot of ways to do it that is safe or you could send it to one of the tuners here and get it done if this is your concern.

You could also shim the rear of the scope to raise the poi.  A good shimming material is 35mm film negative if you can find some.  Also, don't go by that 6 foot distance, back up a bit and see how it is at around 15 yards.

both good suggestions. i had a ruger black hawk with no droop. try the shim first, if your lucky thats it. I'd use a piece of hose clamp cut to fit on the back mount under the scope if i where you. i'm gonna move this thread over to china gate.

I know I responded a few times recently to similar ideas...

The ideas in these posts:
* I don't think it is best practice to shim a scope
* If you can't get vertical alignment, the best solution is an adjustable mount
* Droop mounts are not adjustable. They assume your droop is a set amount, and may do more harm than good.
* Using turrets at extreme adjustment is not using them for that they are made for
* If you shoot too close to a target, you will likely hit low. (6 ft is WAY too close)
* Depending on how you sight in, the pellet can be rising, dropping, or flat at the distance to the target.
* The closer the scope is to the line of the barrel, the better it can potentially follow the arc of trajectory.

Are you shooting with open sights or a scope?

If you are shooting a scope, this scope base adapter is made with a fixed amount of barrel droop compensation built in.  It was designed for RWS rifles becaus they almost all have barrel droop.
I have one on my RWS 54 and was able to put my scope back close to its optical center. It works!

Shoot the rifle at 20 yards and see where the pellet hits, make sure you have the rear sight in the middle of the adjustment range when you do, then up to raise and down to lower....if it still droops then shoot a few viagras through it...bending the barrel won't hurt as long as it's not right at the muzzle

Youse guys are the best.  I thank you all and really like this forum.  I belonged on many forums (milsurps) a couple of years ago but this one is super with tons of knowledgeable AR shooters.  I have learned much about AR's.  Tanks to all and BTW my Air Hawk is chinese made huh.
