Title: Substitute for RWS Sppring Cylinder Oil??
Post by: toby on December 11, 2010, 03:16:52 PM
I just got my new RWS 34 and when I ordered I asked for a container of RWS Spring Cylinder Oil, the gal taking the order said there was some included with the rifle, but there isn't any.

Is there anything I can get locally to use as a safe substitute?

Also, other than running a patch of Goo Gone followed by dry patches through the barrel, is there anything else I need to do before shooting the new gun?

I don't know of any substitute for the RWS oil but I don't recommend putting any oil into the airgun. I know that RWS suggest some drop's now and then but the proper way to lube a airgun is to break it down and use the right lubes in the proper amount's in the right locations. Make sure your stock screw's are snug and some loc-tite them to keep them from vibrating back out. James Maccarri in our "MALL" section sell's airgun lubes that are used when a airgun tune is done a complete tune or lube tune. This involves various tool's and a spring compressor and some knowledge of breaking down a airgun. Ed

I use Birchwood Casey Synthetic Gun Oil on all my guns and it works great (but I don't try and put it on the spring).  I've never directly compared it to RWS Spring Cylinder Oil (and I am not a chemist) so I have no idea if they are the same.

Only because I have a sealed bottle in front of me I will provide the written instructions for use of RWS spring cylinder oil "apply sparingly to main spring barrel pivot pin and cocking lever" , so it sounds to me like that the mentioned locations are it's intended location so 3in1 oil , good ole Rem oil or any decent lube/oil will be just fine.

You're sure right about that John, matter of fact the RWS oil seems to thin to be of much use at pivot points. I've been using a touch of slick 50 mixed into a bottle of US mil heavy machine gun oil for this. Clingy and slick..  I wanted to mention a issue i had with my rws 54, where i applied the rws chamber oil directly into the exhaust port, 4 drops as the bottle said i could. I've seen literature since that say 2 drops.. and maybe i messed up and put 5.. all i know is the gun detonated and broke the spring. I'm thinking .. it was a fluke.. but i'm not putting any drops of anything into any of my guns again.  J

I bought a used 34 the gun was in like new condition. Very stiff cocking an when I remove the stock the spring was very dry. Here is what I did applied a mixture of moly an 20 weight 1 part moly to 3 parts 20 weight oil applied to pivot points. Then with the stock off applied about 1/2 a pea size amout of maccarri tar to spring with a piece of weed whacker line push in with a little tab of tar on end of string work in between the springs. The gun has smoothed out alot. No a tune but it helped alot.

Okay, so if I'm understanding this, one must be very cautious  if/when applying oil, use sparingly if at all.

And, if there is stiffness noticed in cocking, I can get to the spring and pivot points simply by removing the stock and lube as northern lights suggested above. No spring suppressor needed for this.

What I did is called a slot job. Its not a complete teardown. It,s apply spring tar to most parts of the spring in will work it,s way forward with shooting . It,s better then puting oil on the spring. no spring compresser is needed. A little amount is all thats needed. Will last a long time. When the gun starts lossing vel,s or other problems then it will be torn down. With the lube job it,s shooting great. Most pro tuner tell you not to use spring oil in the chamber.

I've had a couple of Airguns honking when pulling down on the barrel, you can tell it is a dry piston seal. I've put 2 drops if Crosman Silicone Chamber oil in the compression tube (the small hole opposite where you load the pellet) . I then stand the gun on it's butt pad for 24 hours to let the oil drain down.
I then fire a few dozen shots to work the oil around the Piston seal. For me this works a treat, it lubed the cylinder nicely making a smooth cocking stroke. The oil won't detonate because silicone has such a high flash point.
I've had to do this on my Hatsan 30 Cal and M125 .25 as both were dry honking on breaking the barrel. If you don't want to pay ridiculous price for Crosman Chamber lube  ($27) in New Zealand, use 10wt pure silicone shock oil from a hobby store. I use Factory Team 10wt and pay $9 for a 2oz bottle..works a treat but only a drop or 2.

By all means, oil the pivots.  The spring should be greased from the factory.

A new springer should not need any oil in the compression chamber.  Adding some is likely to make it diesel vigorously for a long time.  Long enough to damage the spring and seals.

So, if you want to validate the collective experience, add oil meant for a leather seal to a modern synthetic piston seal...

So many guests replying to this thread.  Most unusual.  Almost like its the same guy talking to himself.
