Replacement Nitro Venom has arrived

Note: this is regarding .177 caliber Dusk that just could not produce consistent groups and was driving me crazy!
Initial discovery on the replacement rifle was the amount of oil oozing out of the breech area. Despite a lot of patches dirtied in the bore, this thing dieseled with loud bangs, muzzle flash and smoke for more than a dozen shots. I was wondering if this was going to roast the piece before I ever got it broken in. Was contemplating a post to the forum as to whether or not I should continue shooting. At this point a strip down and clean is out of the question although I will be moving towards that capability. The next day, the loud dieseling was over and it oozed oil (silicone?) and filled the bore with smoke on each shot: not unlike a new springer. I am at about a hundred and fifty shots and it is getting better. I have gone through about 60 swabs.
Compared to the Nitro Venom I returned, this piece shoots remarkably better. This is using the same BSA Essential AO 3-9 x 40 scope and mostly the trusty CPHP pellet. I am noticing that this pellet does not have a problem with the non-chamfered breech although others most definitely do. As for chamfering the breech myself: we'll see.....
The Golden Trigger is waiting and will be far better, of course. But I must say that compared to the NP Trail in 22, bought last summer, the stock trigger is not all that bad, even if not great. If the Trail had had as OK of trigger, I would never have searched for a cure, never found Charlie da Tuna and never sought or found this forum. No doubt the return of the GRT III will make a liar out of me and put a smile on my face, but it seems like Crosman is trying.
My schedule and the weather have conspired against any critical shooting, but it is clear that this rifle shoots noticeably better than the rifle it replaces. Groups are smaller. Fliers are closer in. Things make sense.
I can not imagine how Crosman would combine this rifle with the non-AO 3-9 x 32 scope other than price point. I had planned to use it on a nameless Chi-Com fixed-barrel springer that would probably be happy at the fixed focus 30-ish feet to target distance, but the physical length of this jewel appears to block access to the breech. Nevertheless, the second attempt on a Nitro Venom Dusk seems to live up to what should be expected from this rifle. It is a shame that Crosman is leaving quality control up to their customers. Am I glad I bought it? Darn right.

"It is a shame that Crosman is leaving quality control up to their customers".
**********************************************************
The true shame is that they are sourcing the guns from China!
The truth is that since the very first crude Chinese built airguns appeared here the barrels have been a MAJOR cr*pshoot!
The first QB-78 series in which Tim McMurray had a controlling hand had superb barrels! As did the Chinese copy of the FWB 10 meter rifle. Nor are we short of other examples of Chinese guns with accurate barrels in the PB world. So it's not a case of them not being capable of making good barrels because they are. It is more a case of not having a Tim McMurray unleashed upon the providers to chew the seat out of the pants of both management & production staffs for non-existant QC!
If there's was so much as an iota of intelligence in the Crosman board of directors meetings they would offer Tim a $million for a year in China instilling HIS definition of accuracy and good triggers in the minds of the Chinese airgun industry from top to bottom. There's NO doubt in my mind that Crosman would realize a minimal 10/1 ROI in reputation and the improvement would filter down throughout the entire Chinese industry to the advantage of ALL end users @ the globe.
Tim has something of a rep for being inpatient with customers and more than a bit 'prickly'. And IMO he is completely justified in not "gladly suffering fools' with so much expected of him and only the time granted one mortal to get them done. Cut the man a LOT of slack!
(Sorry Tim if I overstated anything. I'm simply at about the same point and think I recognize the symptoms.
If I'm wrong you are granted permission to throw stones---but only a single handful to be fair) Tom

What really bothers me about this is that Crosman is gambling their brand and image to whatever inconsistencies are making their rifles so ...inconsistent. In that I had had a similar experience with the NP Trail in 22 and that I am a patient old fart, I sent the Nitro Venom back and (further "testing was done" Wednesday after the breeze died down) by golly, I got a good one. But for a kid or somebody on the first time around to bring home that pig in a poke and have bought a stinker, his whole conception of the Crosman (and Benjamin) line, the idea of precision shooting with what we all admit is a challenging type of rifle to shoot consistently and even beating himself up over not being able to shoot confidently is just a bad place to go.
The other troubling part of this QC problem is that the Chinese sourced Crosman break barrels look and feel pretty darned nice. They look and feel like a quality product. There are plenty of Asian sourced products out there that look and feel like the junk they are. Am I going to get real picky about how my Anniversary made in China Daisy Red Rider shoots? Not really. It's kinda' fun at 15 feet, at least for a while. It is what it is. From what I can tell from the online pictures, it looks like Gamo is sharing some of the same major "parts" as the current Crosman/Benjamin line, yet they have apparently gone with the plastic trigger module across the board. Good grief! No doubt I will cherish my "vintage" Big Cat and probably learn repair and tuning on it. In the mean time I feel lucky to have gotten a keeper Nitro Venom on the second draw. For the "consumer" that is going to buy an air rifle and accept however the one in the box shoots as how these things shoot, it is not sound marketing or branding.
Cheers and small groups

How do you spell Crosman In Chinese?
质量差 (poor Quality)
不辜负期望了 (Not living up to expectation)
I love my vintage stuff more and more everyday. Thirty ,Fourty , sixty years and more...and still going.
I doubt we'll see anything they make today 50-80 years.

BINGO! Whoever coined the phrase, "You only get one chance to leave a first impression" musta been an airgunner!
Current Crosman corporate philosophy seems predicated on existing social standards of spreading the blame rather than taking responsibility for results. As another wag once stated, "The Camel is a Horse designed by a Committee".
If Crosman has a QC rep in China it's undetectable. Shame on them! "AS you sow, so shall Ye reap". Karma is a female Canid!

Indeed! Wonder how that 'engineering grade Polymer' will be doing when it reaches the age of my '49 Silver Streak that was last refreshed in '62 or '63 and still putting protein on the table?

49 Silver Streak!!!! Must see pictures,....NOW.
My Silver is just a just a pup.
I was think earlier.... I have bought two new Crosman Rifles in the last year.....my Titan , I love when I don't have to fix it.....I paid 150. a few month ago. Now everyone is dumping them at 75-100 bucks.
Crosman wanted me to spend another twenty dollars to ship them my Titan so they could install a new Jamb that cost $3.00.
Sure thing Crosman...do the math fools. That would put me in the hole $95.00.
So I asked them to send me the parts....now they won't do anything because "I" fixed it. As opposed to throwing more money at it.
BTW.... I'm outa work and had to save to buy those AG's ...Why buy a Crosman? I grew up on them.I thought I was getting a Good quality product. Not the best, but solid .Like all those old AG's I have accumulated. If I used it for some time I expect to fix it. I do not expect to fix it so I can use it.
Too bad Nobody makes a nice pumper anymore.
Oh ya..... I waiting two months still for the jamb spring ...they never seem to have .
Hey Crosman where's my Spring?
