Need Help with my RWS 45
«

Hey everyone, I am looking for some help with my first Air rifle. It is a RWS 45 in really nice condition. It shoots very accurately and pretty hard. I have owned it for a couple of months and it seemed to shoot harder the first month and a half I had it. Have not open it up but am planning to do so. How can I tell what the manufacture date is, what kind of seal is in it, what trigger I have. Help with this and any other info I should know or look for would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Erik

I know for sure 1984 had a leather seal , always wonder why the rws 45 had a leather seal and the 1981 and 1982 rws 36s had synthetic seals never quiet grasped that I am sure some one on here knows the date numbers on them . and welcome to the GTA. thanks David

Yes, welcome to the GTA, Erik.
M & G or Diana had some problems with the early synthetic seals they tried (as did other companies, I believe).
As your gun is definitely in the 'vintage era' (& a great gun BTW
) you might want to look at the Vintage Diana Forum run by my friend 'Garvin' -
http://www.network54.com/Index/103829
& the UK based airgunbbs/collectors section -
http://www.airgunbbs.com/forumdisplay.php?22-Collectable-airguns
You shouldn't have any problems joining those places, but let me know if you do. You can certainly read all the current posts on them.
As a side note, I tried to help Erik on the DWC forum but wrongly thought our mutual fiend (correct spelling) RedFeather owned a Mod 45 - he doesn't, luckily he does know a LOT about leather seals.
Your gun will be date stamped on the 'receiver' (spring cylinder or housing, basically) and the stamping will be in a MM YY format BUT incredibly small ! The date stamp will be on the left, above the trigger and usually, just above the stock line, try using a small torch to highlight it / throw it into contrast.

The 45's probably has the leather piston seal. I just tuned one for a customer that had a extreme failure inside. To get the best out of the 45''s it's best to convert it over to a synthetic piston seal. This also requires some modifications to the piston to except the new seal along with some pre fitting of the seals for the best performance. The 45 that I repaired, updated and tuned turned out great. Ed

Yep Ed is right the seal replacement would be a very good up grade in that rifle along with a tune!

i went to a buddy's house yesterday, he has a chrony. they 45 is all over the place, 800, 749, 640, 627. This would lead me to believe that maybe the seal is not up to snuff. With my limited knowledge of airguns, am I way off base here?

nope! your probly getting detonation from the lubed seal, if you lubed it but it should calm down after the excess lube burns off this why the suggestion of a synthetic seal was brought up!

Glad to see you made it over here, despite what Ian claimed was a bad link. (What's he know?)
OK, first thing you want to do, without disassembling the gun, is to get some pure silicone oil (available in hobby shops that cater to R/C cars) and put several drops down through the transfer port (where the air comes out of the compression tube), then let the gun sit butt-down for a day or so. This is to rejuvenate the piston seal should it have dried out a bit.
Next, when you are ready to shoot, run a dozen or so shots through it to clear out any excess oil and then see if the fps doesn't steady down a bit. Your seal appears to have been doing a fair job, since these guns were made to compete with the early "magnums", although the velocities of any of the early guns like the 45 were not as close as an R9 or Diana 34 of today. In fact, the 45 was considered a bit on the slow side. (Not sure what the factory spec is - maybe mid-800's?) If the seal is now putting out consistent velocities, you can then determine if the power level is up to snuff.
If the power level is low (600's, etc) or erratic, you can try the "tissue test" for the breech seal. Since it is so simple, why not try it, anyway? Take a standard Kleenex tissue, strip it down to one ply and drape it over the breech. Shoot a pellet and see if it fluffs up. If so, your breach seal is leaking. You can either replace the O-ring or, if it looks good (no nicks, flat spots, etc), you can pull the seal and place a shim behind it. Some folks use thin plastic such as from a milk jug or drink bottle. One old timer suggested taking a copper wire, teasing out one strand and hammering it thin to make the shim. (Useful on the old leather-sealed breech guns.)
Once you have it shooting consistently and at a decent level, you will eventually want to clean and lube the inside. I strongly recommend Jim Maccari's excellent lube set available at his shop, Air Rifle Headquarters.
http://www.airguns.citymax.com/page/page/251327.htm
(Hope this link works, LOL!) The reason for doing this is your gun might be pretty dry inside. Not only does the lube grease the spring, making it shoot more smoothly, the 45 requires a bit of lube to produce combustible gasses. Guns of this power level not only compress the air but also fumes from the lubes, which actually burn off at the end of the power stroke. Not having lubes can cost you a hundred fps or more.
The 45 is a really good gun which, because of that leather seal and relatively lower power, garnered a good deal of undeserved bad press. They are well built and employ a decent trigger system. Once your gun is set up properly, it should give you a lifetime of service.

Thanks everybody! This is great info. A little more info on the gun... The breach seal is synthetic and it looks like a small black o ring. I will do the tissue test and see what the results are. I am also seriously thinking (actually am going to do) about sending the gun to Ed Ehrishman to fit a synthetic seal and give it a complete tune. Since this is a nice old gun I figure I want to make sure it is done right. I will post up the results of the tissue test. Thanks again fellas!
