Crosman 2100 - accuracy

Hi all,
This is my first post here. Wanted to ask a few questions about a Crosman 2100 I have.
I bought it probably 5 years or so ago. Shot it a handful of times (mostly bbs) and since then it's mostly stood in the closet. Took it out a couple of years ago and finally installed the scope that came with it, shot it another 50 times. Took it out today, and decided to try to bench rest it at 20 yards. Wow... 3" - 8" "groups"? Not very impressed. The BBs were even worse than that. I shot 3 BBs and said "better try some pellets". I did get one 3 shot group at probably 3", but several groups were 5" and the worse might have been 8". The first few groups were shot with maybe 5 pumps, the later ones with maybe 10 pumps. Too much air?
Some background on me. I had one of these when I was a kid, and I was a terror on birds. That was 40 years ago or so, no way would I just kill things anymore (I don't even hunt), but that was accepted when I was kid in the Deep South. I bring it up to say, I was pretty accurate at 10-15 yards with iron sights, standing. Today I was using a scope off a a table and two bean bags. PLUS... I've been a serious pistol shooter the last 3 years, shooting USPSA, IDPA, etc. My pistol groups offhand are usually at *least* as good as this scoped rifle from a rest. I've shot probably 40,000 9mm rounds in the last 2.5 years, I think my trigger control is fairly decent.
So... what could explain these terrible groups? The fact that it's just been sitting all these years? I never once cleaned it or oiled it. Is a seal gone? Is it dirty and/or dry? I probably shot between 100-200 BBs through it back when I first bought it... and now I'm reading that "BBs ruin the rifling?" Also, the owner's manual doesn't even mention cleaning the barrel, just applying some oil (which I've yet to do).
I was Googling around, and see this dude is getting 1" groups at 25 yards. Impressive. Of course, his was right out of the box the day he got it.
Anyway.... I think I'd like to spend a little more time in the backyard working on shooting, but it's not enjoyable when your shots are ALL over the paper. Granted, I have very little trigger time with a rifle in the last 40 years, but if I can shoot a ragged hole at 7 yards standing with a 9mm Glock... think I could do better than what I got today.
So.... suggestions, ideas, tips?

Mine shoots 1/4" 5 shot groups at 10 yds, bench rest. If I put a scope on it I can do a little better. RWS Super Domes are my guns fav. pellet. I would try cleaning it, and some different pellets to start with. I dont think a couple 100 BB's would ruin it, but I wouldn't continue shooting BB's....

What kind of pellets? Some pellets can shoot
astoundingly
badly, while others are nice and tight. Typically, the only Walmart level pellets that shoot well are Crosman Premier.
If you shot a lot of BBs through it, it is possible the rifling is damaged, but I would think that'd take a lot of shots. Ted didn't shoot ANY BBs through his.

Ron59,
Are you using the scope that came with the gun? If so, maybe give it a try with open sights and see how you do. I picked up an Airmaster77 from Walmart back in June after watching Ted's video review of the Crosman 2100. The Airmaster77 is the same gun just re-badged as a Remington. I found that little 4x20 scope just had way too much parallax to be very useful at 20 - 30yds. Best I could do with the scope was maybe 3" groups. With open sights I was able to shrink the groups down to about an inch. (And I'm a terrible open sight shooter) I ended up returning the gun. I never really had any intention of keeping it; I just wanted to try it out. It's definitely a nice little plinker and if I had kept the gun, I would have found a better scope to put on it. Good luck!
Regards,
Duber

If it pumps well and seems to hold air well, I don't think it's the seals... I'd try cleaning it up and oiling it with 30 weight Non Detergen motor oil or Pellgunoil... Use a cotton swab to clean the barrel... Then try shooting it again...
It's possible that the BBs ruined the rifling.... I've seen what steel BBs did to my old 1377 barrel... It was turned into a smooth bore... If you ever take the gun apart, try looking down the barrel and check to see if the rifling is still there.... You can always get a replacement barrel from Crosman if the rifling is gone..
Mine likes the Crosman Premier Hollow Points...

Check out the current GTA 10 yd multi-pump rifle match.
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php/topic,16724.0.html
While the two entries will not worry the Olympians, both entries are
2100's by different names. The 766 was what the 2100 was called in the 80's.
The Remington 77 is a renamed 2100, in a different color.
Those two entries were shot standing/off hand. Rested I get pretty nice groups for
a very inexpensive rifle.
You should try different pump levels and pellet types. Max pumps and cheapest
pellets may not show the rifle at its best.
My 766 likes RWS Basics, Hobby's and Miesterkuglen Pistol 7.0gr..
(most of my shooting of this rifle is under 50'...Pellets only)
Have fun learning what your's likes.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.
lampy: Yeah, probably only shot a few hundred bb's. Will stop shooting them. The pellets I bought were from Dick's (where I got the gun), Daisy "Precision Max" Pointed Pellets. I'm noticing the tin they're in doesn't even list how many grains they are. I'll try some different ones.
Duber: Yes, using the scope it came with. As far as parallax goes, that would show in groups vertically, no? MY absolute best group was dead centered on my target, but strung left to right. I was able to put a couple of shots dead center of my .75" square target (a bullet paster), the problem was with flyers that were up to 8" out! Did seem like my better groups were at 5 pumps, when I started going to 10 pumps (like Ted was doing) the group did open up.
Daysailer: Thanks for the link and info. Yeah, my groups at 5 pumps were a little tighter than what they were when I went to 10 (that's how many Ted was using). And I was using what I imagine are cheap pellets. In fact, I just went to a site that sells pellets:
http://www.airgunwarehouseinc.com/177caliber.html
I see the pellets I bought sell for $2.95 whereas the RWS start at twice that and go up from there. That RWS "Pellet Sampler" package sounds interesting. I might run out to lunch to see if the sporting goods place near here sells some RWS products.
(hope it's okay to post that link, I'm not trying to "push" them at all, just wanted to compare the ones I was using against what is available. Mine are definitely on the low end, cost wise. )
Snaab9-2: See above for the pellets I was using. Definitely need to seek out some other varieties.
So: I think my plan of action is to run a swab or two down the barrel with a little oil, oil the appropriate areas, and get some better pellets. I do want to try the scope a little more (never shot a scoped gun very much, it's kinda cool), but if I don't get better results will try with just the irons.
Thanks again for all the helpful comments. I will give it another go and will post back my results.
