Break barrel question
«

Is it possible for the accuracy of a break barrel be affected by the temperature of the seal o-ring? I have some vertical stringing of pellets and it seems that when I shoot in low temperature that my pellets usually hit a little lower than when I shoot in warm temperatures.
Could it be that a cold o-ring is hard and expands which causes the barrel to be a little lower in the cold weather? I am using a scope mounted to the receiver so if the barrel does not line up exactly each shot then there is going to be some accuracy problems.
Another question is what is the best way to see if the breech seal is leaking on a break barrel?

I asked this question in the Crosman Benjamin forum, and it seems to be that there is loss due to lubricants used. Springers seem to be more affected than gas struts.

Checking for a breech seal leak would be a matter of loading a pellet then covering the opening with a piece of tissue. Lock the barrel up and fire. Then check the tissue for breakage where the seal seats.

VERY common issue with Piston guns spring or nitro.
COLD clearances tighten up & seals stiffen some and lubricants thicken slowing everything down.
HOT or warmer ... parts fit a tad looser, seals soften up and lubricant drag lessens speeding everything up.
TRICK in tuning is to have action set up in such a way that the above cause & effect is minimal.

jim p, if you have access to a chrony, you may shoot at different temperatures and see what happens with fps and ES.

Thanks all. I will just keep a mental note that cold weather results in a slightly lower impact.
Our archery club has a chrono and I am going to use it to see what kind of speeds I am getting. It will be interesting to see if the speed is constant.

I'm new to all this air gun stuff, however in my usual habit of researching things I get involved with I have found that the nylon breach seal is first suspect for 'vertical drift' when temps are changing or low. Also noticed that Hatsen makes a rubber breach seal which will solve this issue.
Try a U-Tube search for 'barrel droop on break barrel air rifles'. My Crossman Vantage NP .22 is still breaking in its' nylon seal (and the weather outside is frightful) so I will be watching for this myself.
