Title: detailed reviews and mods on the really cheap daisy rifles? NOT the 880 or 953
Post by: momosgarage on September 11, 2011, 11:48:35 PM
First off, I know they have very marginal performance in comparison to the daisy 880 or the crosman 2100/airmaster 77 or pumpmaster 760/powermaster 664 or Daisy 953, but hardly anyone ever talks about the lowly Daisy 35, Daisy 840, Daisy 901 or Daisy 22SG.

The Daisy 35 is practically free and is seem to be just screaming for modifications.  I also recently held a Daisy 901 and Daisy 22SG and I have to say I like the way they felt in general a whole lot more than modern incarnations the Daisy 880.

Well whats anyone done with these rifles noted above? Any detailed reviews?  Any mods?

I like the 22sg but I've heard something in the fact that an obstruction or misalignment in the transfer port doesn't lend the gun to power modification very well... A metal pump arm would be a good mod though...

I guess it depends on what you're talking about when you talk about marginal performance. The Daisy 35 looks very similar to the 880, except for the pumping arm, and it is advertised at 625 fps instead of 700 fps. (the 880 puts out more like 650 fps, from what I've read)

The 901 is advertised as a 750 fps gun, same as the 880 which is probably also BS. It is probably more like 650-700. I bet it is the same gun as the 880, but with a different pumping arm. (more effort)

The 22SG is also not a mild performer. Remember that it is a .22 instead of a .177, so lower velocity with the same mechanics are to be expected.

The 35 is a lower power gun, avoid that. Spend the extra $20 and get a 901, and have the option for more power, if you want it. Meanwhile, you can get a given level of power with fewer pumps the rest of the time.

Did you check youtube and pyramydair sights for reviews? YouTube will probably have more kid reviews, but PA usually has some good, (if brief) reviews by the users.

I have been playing around with the sg22 these week. Havn,t shot it in awhile. Very accurate gun mine loves dasiy wadcutters the best. I also learn something these week. The 22sg was always a pain to load wadcutter there a lip in the loading port an they would hang up. Tip put the pellet in point barrel down an give a slight shake an the pellets fall right in. I test gruops at 20 25 30 yd,s. Crony results with 14 gr dasiy wadcutters 4 pumps 411 6 pumps 465 8 pumps 485 an 10 510 fps. For target shooting 4 pumps dead on at 20 yd,s 5 pumps at 25 will put me about 1/4 to 1/2 high. At 30 yd,s 10 pumps will put me at 1 inch low. very tight groups with gun rested. I need arear butt pad for mine little short for me. I,m also interest in the 35 for shooting bb,s my 760 does very good with dasiy zinc bb,s out to 20 yd,s gun is scope with a old 4 power gamo. Got a 901 coming this week that I picked up off of gun broker for 25.00. I think I will like the stock better then 880 I,m planning on a complete test on 901 by next week. The 35 an 760 are smooth bore so they would make good bb-shooters while the 880 901 22sg are rifled an make nice pellet shooters. Got dasiy ground shot coming next week also to see if that improves the my bb-shooters. Trigger are a little stiff on the dasiy if a lighter spring an moly was used on trigger the gun would problely be a tack driver. For the price the 35 mmight make a great bb-shooter but for accuraccy with pellets you would need a rifled barrel.

For got about the 840 griz. Very nice bb-shooter best open sights on a bb-shooter besides the dasiy 499 an 845 mentor. Qiuck to get on target the front fiber optic is not to big like alot of sights. Also you double pump the gun. Mine on 1 pump will do 310 fps an on 2 pumps will do 350Fps. More pumps will only get you a few fps more an not good for the gun. Also all my bb-shooters like the dasiy zinc better then the crossman copper heads. With the griz I can hit my teaspoon an table spoon spinners most time at 15 yd,s 20 yd,s is alot harder to do. The 35 might out shoot the griz at longer distance. But it does,nt have the front fiber optic sight . so for distance shooting a scope would be nice.

northern lights you read my mind.  I also like the stock on the 901 much better than the 880.  I was also thinking of using the Daisy 35 as a pure BB shooter.

I was also thinking of replacing the plastic pump lever on the Daisy 22SG.  Is it the same size a the metal pump handle in the 953?  Any mods or things to check for on this rifle or is it fine out of the box?

On another forum I read the the Daisy BBs have better QC and are a more consistent size which results in tighter groups than the crosman BB's.

I plan on buying the 35 also. I like I need another bb-shooter. But the price is so cheap why not. I have no problems with pump arm on the 22sg. It pumps so easy should last the life of the gun. I don,t know if there still avaivable but dasiy has the 22sg in there muesum forum on sale for 40.00 It,s also number as the arkasas can opener on the stock an forearm. Prett cool looking.  I don,t think the pump handle off the 953 will fit the dasiy 22sg I have the 853 an the pump arm is longer. Also the smoothbore guns seem to shoot bb,s better then rifled barrels.

I just went though the archive of the GTA forums and saw this:

http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/index.php/topic,11394.0.html (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/index.php/topic,11394.0.html)

Back in 2008 a member named derekmcminn put a shroud on a 22SG and cleaned the inards up some.  Where did this guy go?  Is he still on the board? That looks like a pretty unique mod of the lowly 22SG.  From what I know of the Daisy 880s, 901s and 35s the real steel barrel is covered by a phony black outer barrel that has the sights attached to it.  It seems like the perfect way to add a full shroud covering the real steel barrel, if the 22sg has the same barrel design.  I assume it does.

This brings me to another issue.  Does daisy still sell parts for the 22sg.  It would seem to me since the insides are all the same, a 22sg barrel could be modded to fit a 901, 880 or 35.

Here is a mod for the "straw" barrel in the Crosman 2100:

http://www.airgunforum.ca/forums/topic35906.html (http://www.airgunforum.ca/forums/topic35906.html)

I think this would work for the Daisy 22SG, 880, 35 or 901
