Title: New Baikal MP-512M, need help
Post by: ConnorG on September 07, 2010, 10:55:38 PM
Hey all,

New to the forum, new to target air rifle shooting. I've shot a fair number of guns but not frequently. Anyways, I received this new Baikal Mp-512M and took it to a range to test-fire a couple rounds and it works great. Now, since it costs $10 per person to go there and it's slightly far from where I live, I was wondering this. Is this thing safe to shoot in a basement with decent air flow? If I were to get ahold of a bullet trap (to shoot into, through a target) and whatnot, would it be safe to shoot, or is it too high powered, ricochet, etc. Also note, it shoots lead .117 cal lead pellets, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the help  ;D

I have a 512 but I shoot outside. Ricochet would be a problem for you in a basement. How much space do you have in the basement?  I have shot into a cardboard box with thick books, like phone books inside, so the pellets lodge.  A bullet trap would do it also but if it is a metal trap some pellets still get out.
Welcome to the forum ConnorG. Others will give you more ideas to help you out....

Heres your solution to basement shooting...shoot into a 2 liter bottle that is packed really tightly full of Walmart plastic bags. It catches the pellets really fast, and there is no chance in ricochet. Try it, but try it outside your first few shots. It should work really well for you

I've got around 32 feet in one direction, not a very far range, but I want somewhere safe to shoot. I will look into the phonebook and 2 liter bottle thing. Thanks again, and any further help is great.

alrighty, I'll give it a shot. Also, If I put up a catcher about 5 feet apart at where I'm shooting, as well as setting up the phonebooks/2 liter bottles, would that be good enough protection for a 790 fps gun if I wear eye-protection? Also might be worth mentioning that the walls are brick, so how big is the risk for ricochet?

I have no clue. If you can hit the 2 liter bottle every time then you dont have to worry about it ricocheting. I found out this method a week ago and it is awesome. You can shoot 100's of shots through that one bottle to

A cardboard box is what I use inside. I put a piece of plywood in the back of the box and filled it full of phone books and newspaper. Tape a target to it and shoot. When the front gets all shot up I stuff in some more paper and tape a new piece of corragated cardboard to the face of the box. Works fine with my .22 caliber MP-512M. The box is about 12" wide, about 18" tall and about 8" deep. Keep the target in the middle and even if you miss a little the box will catch the pellet.
Since there is no powder being burned and hopefull little smoke from your gun there's little to cause problems as far as the air is concerned. My biggest problem of shooting indoors is catching it from my wife!!!   ;D

The 2 liter bottle thing worries me. Are you shooting into the curved side of the bottle or did you cut the end off and you shoot into the 4 - 5 inch opening.

Also, you might want to hang an old blanket or rug behind what you shoot at. Let it hang loosely so any stray pellets will be caught in the blanket rather than shoot through it.

If you shoot at duct sealed box, you will not have a problem with ricochet.

Archer sells a wood box that takes Duct Seal ( you can get duct seal at loew's or or the depot  it is in the elect dept 6 bars cost about 12 bucks it never gets hard and one thickness will stop a round that goes through a 1 inch pine board ) I built mine out of Oak just like the one in Archer add , I tried the metal ones they sell in K mart and they bend out of shape after a rew rds. My wood trap with duct seal is about 3 years and has had thousands of pellets shot into it I have to replace the duct seal every once in a while but it still keeps working. ) I have shot B30 , B21 , RWS 48's as well as many other magnum rifles with out them going through the target, in a 10 M setting. I have to second and third the Archer trap, easy enough to build and stops my Big Cat (About 950 fps) cold. I just can not put more than 5 pellets in the same hole, it does reach the back of the trap then. A add on that I did when I built my trap was to take an old baking pan, cut one end down (Only so it fits into the back of the box) and put the duct seal into that. Then to change duct seal or to remove pellets I just take out the pan to work with it easier and I have that metal backing for additional stopping power.

#EDIT#
The duct seal also stops the lead dust from flying around.

You could add a second layer of duct seal I've tried that and it helps but when I put the duct seal I compact it pounding it down with a 2x4 about 4 ft. long or a 10 lb sledge using the head you must make sure the back is against the floor so you don't break the box apart mine is screwed together and epoxyed too. It was only when I put 10 pellets into it and had 3 touching holes in the target paper that I had a problem, it dented the baking pan I have in the back, but no break through. BTW I am shooting at it at 10 yards.

Wow, alright. Thanks for all the tips. Will definitely look into assembling a type of box similar to that described above. Also, while I'm still on safety, what are the risks of lead in the air and what not if I keep a fan around to blow the air away from my gun as well as washing my hands after shooting? Thanks, I'm just a little picky when shooting in my own home.

There should not be a lead problem in the air. The pellets are not dusty. But you are correct in washing your hands after shooting and before eating.
I am sure to wash mine after handling...
