Stoeger X-20 .177 Gas Ram Conversion

OK so the first Stoeger X-20 Gas Ram conversion is done. Parts that made up the conversion were, one gas ram, one GRS NP Bushing Kit, one set of custom brass breech pivot washers. (same washers that are used on Crosman NP & XL gas rams), one GRT-III trigger, new seal, new hand spun trigger block assy. I also spun a generic barrel shroud for aesthetics's.
Tried and tested and I was very happy with the outcome. Very solid with smooth shooting and cocking cycle. Basically the Stoeger another clone of the old B-19. Same basic power plant as the Gamo 1000 series air guns and the Crosman line of 1000 fps shooters such as the Quest, Summit, Phantom etc. Just different names and different style stocks.
From what I could see is the Stoeger is made at the same factory as the Crosman's I mentioned above as well as the newer gas ram Trail's, Titan's, Venom's etc.
The Stoeger is a good built gun. I would say with it being a full steel barrel it is one up on most of the newer Gamos with the thin rifled tube wrapped in polly barrels. And I would have to give Crosman the edge over the Stoeger only for one reason and it is my own personal opinion. The Stoeger has double chisel lock up which is good but not always aligned properly. Where the newer Croman and Gamo's have the chisel and cross pin lock up. One of the nicest things about the Stoeger wood stocks is that they are very nice..
My preference..
The overall performance of the Gas Ram conversion on the new Stoeger really puts it in a new class. IMO the same class as the new Crosman series Gas Ram. Even though the gas rams are not an option from the factory it is a nice project gun to do the coversion on. You just need a lathe and mill to make the parts needed for the conversion.
One note: Gas Rams, are not all created equal.

Hopefully this weekend the weather will hold and I can sneak away for a little trigger time. I'll do a more thorough review of the gun if I can wipe the tears of joy and the big smile off my face long enough to see the keyboard.
The X20 pictured above arrived at it's new home yesterday. I was at work but could NOT resist tearing into the boxes. And what greeted me was another superb example of Gene's masterful works. I had to just stand and admire it for a few seconds before lifting it out of the box.
The weight and balance are excellent. The wood on these is quite nice. The custom shroud sets this carbine right off, like a top hat to a tuxedo. LOL
I brought a CP 4-16X40 AO/IR scope with me to work, already mounted to a 3 bolt Leapers medium mount. I slapped that on and handled the gun a bit just to get the feel. Wow....
It was cold and windy here yesterday afternoon but I couldn't wait for the weekend. After work, I drove to the back of our lot where we have a burn pit. I set up an old skid and attached some targets I printed off. I backed off about 25 yards and sat on the tailgate. First shot low 6" and right 4". Took 5 shots to walk the scope in but she nailed the bull from then on. MAN, can you say sweet??? This piece cocks smooth as silk. Shoulders very well and extremely steady. Squeeze the GRT and you ARE gonna hit what you are looking at and the follow through is not an issue. Firing cycle is what I've come to expect from a Master Gene tune. MANY thanks Bawanah for a sweet shooter.
Last night I decided to chance firing into my duct sealed pellet trap at 20' to get some Chrony numbers. I was a little uneasy, thinking this thing MIGHT punch right through the duct seal and steel back of the trap into the wall. I would be in deep poo-poo if that happened.
But, thankfully the duct seal held up, but the rounds were VERY close to hitting the steel plate in the back of the trap. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the gun shooting in the high 800's. Average was around 885fps with CPHP. And yes, another shooter for me that LIKES CPHP.
The spread was around 19fps in a 10 shot string but I'm not REAL confident in my Chrony readings indoors with the lighting I have. I want to get it outside for a real string and several different pellets.
I'll wrap this edition of the review up by saying if Gene offers another of these guns up, you BETTER jump all over it!!!! This is one FINE shooter and will make a fantastic addition to any arsenal.
Thanks again Bawanah Gene!!!!
Happy Shooting!!!!
