Title: Crosman Custom shop carbine
Post by: bradyman1 on March 10, 2011, 12:42:29 PM
I am about to pull the trigger on a custom shop carbine. I am planning to use it for an all around family/truck/hunting gun. I will plink with it most of the time. I really want my son (will be 7 soon) and my wife to be able to shoot it. I hope that my son gets his first squirrel with it. Hunting will be between 16 and 27 yards or so. Plinking may go out to 60 yards or so (at soda can sized targets and larger). So my question is .22 or .177? And should I go with the 14.6"or 18" barrel? Being compact is a plus. I am really leaning toward .22 caliber with a 14.3" barrel. I have a crosman Titan, and a 1377 and I prefer the .22 pellet. I know trajectory will be more loopy, but the down range power is still greater with .22.

What would you suggest?
How long will the gun be with the 14.6" or the 18" barrel?
Will I get a huge FPS advantage with the 18" barrel?

Thanks for the help!

Jason

Thank you very much Spook. Here are the numbers jacked from the article. I am suprised! I wonder it the extra 4" of barrel is worth the extra 40 or so fps? (14.6 vs 18"). Hmmm.

Barrel- Hobby- Kodiak
20" -------- 645 -------- 548
19" -------- 689 -------- 564
18"-------- 680 --------- 562
17"--------- 681 --------- 555
16"-------- 671--------- 547
15"-------- 641--------- 541
14"-------- 639--------- 518
13"-------- 637--------- 512

I've seen that article before.... My experience with Crosman 22XX guns does not agree.... I have basically found that the velocities follow the trend that Crosman advertises.... At 70*F I got the following:

2240 (8") ~ 460 fps
2250 (18") ~ 520 fps
2260 (24") ~580 fps

In addition, using 850 psi HPA on an otherwise stock 22XX valve (it even had the piercing pin in place).... I got the following results:

14.6" barrel ~ 562 fps
24" barrel ~ 619 fps

I have found no evidence of an optimum barrel length on a stock 22XX Crosman platform.... the longer the better in terms of velocity.... That is NOT necessarily true if you reduce the hammer spring tension to optimize the shot count.... I have a .177 with an 18" barrel that shoots just under 500 fps and delivers over 120 shots per 12g. cartridge.... It MIGHT not apply to that, although I have not tried different barrel lengths on that gun....

BTW, for your son's gun I chose 14" in .22 cal.... I love that combo....  ;D

What is the overall length of one of these guns?

While not from the custom shop,
I am very happy with my AS2250XT.
Shooting it in my house at up to 45 feet,
I get close to 600 shots from a 9oz bottle.
They are very easy to use regulated HPA on later
if you want.

Mine has been shooting in the high 190's
in the forums 10 yard off hand rifle matches.
I would not hesitate to hunt with it at the
ranges you mention. Especially with a boss
valve and port mods.(which will come later on mine)
I put the two stage sear from Airguns of Arizona
in mine and it is very nice.
It shoots very well for the money.

The only question concerning your son is length of pull.
Which will be the same on the Custom shop carbine.

What is the overall length of one of these guns?

My AS2250XT is 30 1/4 inches to the rear of the stock,
To the end of the bottle is 30 3/4. The bottle
sits above your shoulder.
I did not think I would like the bottle as a cheek rest,
but have found it fairly comfortable.

Great shooting Brushy Bill. I really like the airsource, but I think the standard powerlets will be easier for me to get and the gun is a bit cheaper. What is the barrel length?
This is going to be my gun, I just plan on letting the family shoot it also. If it doesn't fit my son he will just have to stick to his daisy buck for a little while longer.

The barrel is 14 inch, .22 cal
I already had a couple 9oz bottles
that I was using on one of my
QB rifles.

There is a bait & tackle shop down the
road that fills them both for 3 bucks.
That gives me dangerously close to
1200 shots.
There is no way I would have
bought it if the airsource cartridges were
my only option.

I too like the convenience of the
12 gram. They store well and
don't take up much space.

I hope you, and your family enjoy
what ever you decide to get.
Lucky son,, lucky dad.

Be sure to tell us about it once you get it in.
And come to the target shooting gate and
join us in a match, I am sure you will find
one there that you will find interesting.
It will for sure improve your confidence when
hunting.

In the shop gate I've recently posted the results of testing my 1377 after modding.

http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php/topic,7552.0.html (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php/topic,7552.0.html)

I started with the factory .177 barrel at I believe 10". I then swapped to the .22 caliber 14.5" barrel. I posted those numbers. I have a 24" barrel on the way and will add those numbers to the thread also. But so far, either swapping to .22 caliber or the extra length (maybe both) caused an increase in fpe. I'm liking that and hope the numbers go up even farther with a 24" barrel.
Happy Shooting!!!!

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like the .22 with the 14" barrel is winning out. That is what I was leaning towards. Gotta find a way to fund this now... I was planning on getting it today so I would have it in time for my birthday but I was reminded of the $700.00 in dental work we have had over the past few weeks.  :( I guess I could sell a kidney?? ;D It may have to wait for a bit.  :'(

I just ordered the .22 14" and 24" barrels from Crosman and one was around 12, the other around 13$.
They can be swapped afterwards quite easily.

My 2250XT is right at 16 inches from the trigger to
the rear of the stock.

I have seen several post where guys has cut
sections from the stock rails and epoxied them
back together for their smaller kids.
The cheek weld point is still very low.
That is the number one drawback to these
little carbine stocks in my opinion.

I went and tried searching for the shortened
stock post. Have not had any luck yet.
I will post here and PM you once I do find them.

I did get a reply from the guy who shortened one of these stocks.
He said he sawed it as close to the butt of the rifle as possible.
Shortened the upper and lower sections of the stock and used
countersunk deck screws to put it back together.
Once he verified the length, he backed out the screws and
applied some epoxy to the mating surfaces
before tightening the screws.

14.6 not to long not to short
if you add a shroud it wont make the gun to long

No problem.
Here is a pic courtesy of Steve V,
he said he just epoxied his, I think
the countersunk screws would keep
me feeling better about it though.

Congrats,, last night I ordered the same pistol except I went with the 18" .177 barrel and the camo shoulder stock.  I hope they complete mine and ship it as quickly as they did yours.  I'll be looking forward to your review when you get your shooter.

Nice! Sooner or later I'll be ordering the same thing. I have a Leapers 3-9x32 to put on it, will be doing the mods Bill mentioned and that will probably complete my airgun collection. I'll likely get a second stock and shorten it up for my son to use.

Yes, you can request the short steel breech but it cost
extra, otherwise you get the long version.
(the only reason to get the short one is with iron sights
only and some weight reduction. in my opinion)

Well I got it yesterday!! I have ran 3 carts through it, so about 100 pellets or so. It is a fun little gun. It was only about 65 while I was shooting so I have hopes that it will be shooting a bit harder as it warms up around here. Things I noticed.... The gun is heavier than I expected. It is not heavy, it just has more heft than I thought it would. The length of pull is looong.. I can shoot it fine but it feels a bit akward. I think the length of pull is longer than any of my other airguns. I will probably shorten that a bit. The trigger is okay. It was a little heavy until I took the stock off and adjusted it down all the way. I think once it wears in it will be much better. It is also a bit loud. That I expected. I may need to get me a TKO. Overall I really like the gun. I think it will be lots of fun. I will post pics later, I don't have access to my camera right now. Thanks for all the advice guys!!

Here is the 2400KT next to my sons Daisy Buck, I need to trim the stock a bit so the 2400KT will fit him.

Sure hope you like it, my AS2250XT shoots incredibly
well. I have put about 4500 rounds through it since
mid december. It just seems to get better.

Here is a photo from a guy on another site who
shortened a stock for his kids. He cut right at the
butt of the stock and shortened the upper and
lower sections. He pre drilled and countersunk
deck screws and epoxied it back together.

Thanks guys. I like it so far. I wish it would get a bit warmer around here so I can see what she can do in warmer temps. Most of the shooting I have done with it has been in temps around 70 degrees. I am having a difficult time getting past cutting a brand new stock, but I expect that I will cut it before too long. I need to shorten the pull for me a bit. Stock it is 16". I want to take a couple inches out of it. I don't know that I will shorten it enough for my son but it is probably going to get chopped a couple inches eventually.

I did a little shooting with this yesterday with my 6 year old (he will be 7 at the end of the month). I have a target that is about 5"x5" square hanging out about 45-50 yards. My boy was hitting it almost everytime. He was setting in a lawn chair resting on the patio table. If I ever get around to shortening that stock he could really put some groups together with it!
