QB78 with 1500psi Ninja tank - COMPLETED & starting another

I am looking to set up a QB78 HPA rig for my uncle for Christmas. The basic strategy is to combine the stellar instructions from rsterne's $200 QB79 PCP thread and Ribbonstone's QB78 tank block installation instructions.
I want to tune a .22 cal to 25-30fpe that he can use for hunting, and not having the ability to craft Bob's "Maxi-valve", my plan is to use the QB78's longer tube to put more regulated air on deck to make it possible to reach my intended power level.
Assuming I need to set the Ninja SHP bottle to 1200 or even 1500psi, I just want to get some advice regarding safety of the QB79 tank block and the QB78 air tube. Firstly, I understand the importance of shortening the air tube (removing the threaded portion) to get back to full thickness, and of cross-drilling it carefully so as to maintain as much steel as possible between the end of the tube and the tank block attachment screws. I would also definitely upgrade the screws to a high grade type from a reputable supplier. I can drill and tap holes for additional attachment screws if that is deemed necessary but I don't want to do it if it's gross overkill.
Is that the advisable thing to do? Am I missing anything?

I have heard bad things about those tank blocks, mainly that the screws are to close to the end of the tube and have the problem of pulling out. There is another company out there that makes a tank block with the bolts further back, giving you more "meat" for the block to hold.

Yeah, that's partly why I was asking. Bob had pointed out that CO2 climbs up to 1400psi at 100°F (gun sitting in the sunshine) and 1900psi at 120°F (gun sitting in a car on a hot day) and we don't see evidence of failures in QB79 rifles so I was wondering if it is of any practical concern. But if need to add a shear pin or another screw or two, that's not a big deal.

I would say add more if you can. It is always better to be safer if you can.

That's about the only problem, and adding a farther back retainer (pin or screws) will cure it. Leaves one -o-ring for sealing, but that's all you need if it fits right.
As you are looking to convert a long tubed 78, then you'll be drilling the holes, so make them no larger than they have to be.

Make sure you run a 1.8K burst disc on the downstream side of the regulator.... That will limit you to about 1500 psi on the regulator output (I've tried 1600 and sometimes they blow the disc on a hot day).... If the tank block in the QB79 is bolted to the stock with the two screws and you don't pressurize the gun without that being the case, I see no problem, as you are operating within what we know the gun should withstand, and we've never seen any evidence to the contrary.... If you aren't bolting the tank block to the stock, then I would recommend stronger screws further back or an extra pin in the block....

I've never seen the JDS tank block.... If there is no air port in the center of the ASA fitting, could you not drill a blind hole and insert a 1/8" (even 3/32") pin to depress the pin valve in the regulator?.... I do that on all my custom tank blocks rather than have to do any fancy milling to leave a bump in the middle....

Thanks for all the advice guys. I will review everything more closely this evening and post if I have any further questions. As of now, I plan to use the newer 4 O-ring tank block (if Mike has one) and sacrifice a couple of the O-ring spots for another couple of screws.
Really looking forward to building up and tuning one of these rifles!

HAve had them up above 30 foot pounds with 1250psi, but it takes more valve work and tuning. Using 1400-1500psi would probably make you energy goal with less fiddling around.
The air passage in the tank block runs towards the bottom of the "spigot" that fits into the air tube. You could drill all the way across and use a cross pin if you cared to.

Mike just sent me a very nice looking QB78 Deluxe and by the time the weekend rolls around, I'll be chompin' at the bit to begin the mods.
The thing stumping me so far is, where the heck can I buy one of the 13ci tanks with the SHP regulator fitted? Is Pomona Air the only game in town? The ebay vendor linked elsewhere doesn't seem to have it listed. Nor could I find it on ebay with any vendor. Same thing on Amazon. With Rob no longer at Ninja Air, the vendor gate looks dead. It occurs to me what I need to do is make some phone calls but don't we live in the information age?
It's easy to find the standard one that is identified as having a 750 - 850psi output. I think it comes with a 1.8k burst disk (at least that's what's on my son's tank) so for now I'm going to look at whether it can be shimmed for higher output. If so, I may do some initial testing with it.

I was wondering if anyone can order direct from Ninja Paintball? They do have prices listed and pressure requirements needed upon ordering.

I've made an inquiry with both Mike at Flying Dragons and Tim at Mac1 Airguns asking if they are/would stock them.... Mike wasn't interested in carrying them in stock, Tim is checking into it.... If you're interested, it wouldn't hurt to post in the thread about it in the Mac1 Airguns Gate....

Well, seeing as how I couldn't find any CO2 cartridges in town, I had to go ahead and put on a Ninja bottle (regular 850psi) and try out the QB78 Deluxe that Mike sent me. Dropped it into a QB79 stock just so I could go outside and send some pellets down the barrel.
It's pretty much just flicking them at this point...58 shots on about 500 psi, so I'll definitely work on kicking up the velocity this weekend and see what it can do. I first focused on getting the adjustable rings set up to keep the scope in its optical center. Then I tried a few groups with CPHP's, JSB 13.4's, and H&N FTT 5.53's. It didn't like the first two but did reasonably well with the H&N's. It was wet outside so the paper didn't behave but it looks like both groups were around 0.5".
Hey, it's a start!

Use the JDS air block instead. I did all my research to bottle my disco. The build quality is better and then there is no pin. There are two screws that are position deeper in the tube which makes it stronger for higher psi.
Thank

I read that with higher pressure, you might want to upgrade the valve stem.
If you contact the ebay vendor that everyone says has them listed, they'll admit that they accidentally let the listing expire, and they'll get right on it, so you can order. When I converted my dad's gun, I saw that they only had the 850psi regged bottles listed, so I e-mailed them. They promptly responded, saying that I could order it in a minute. I waited exactly one minute, went to their storefront, searched, found it, and ordered the SHP reg on the 13ci bottle. My dad's '79 is a hammer.
What happened to Rob, by the way?

At least with the 850psi bottle, shouldn't be any issues with the tank block mounting strength (and up to about 1200PSI there doesn't seem to be any problem). Having made your own holes in that long tube could be a help; if the tube holes were made to the absolute minimum size do end up with stronger fixation.
Certainly are just "flicking" them out at that setting, but getting +260 shots per fill while doing it. Not really sure what you'll get with a little fiddling, but in .177 12-13 foot pounds is certainly possible with a stock valve and 850psi air.

The time is nigh.
I just finished reassembling the rifle and am in between pumping sessions to get it pressurized for a chrony test. I polished up all the internals, modified the valve, the hammer, the bolt, did some porting, and numerous other things so I'm anxious to see how it works. I only have a standard 850psi tank on it at the moment so I'm not expecting too much, but I will be later this week when the Ninja SHP tank comes in.
Wish me luck
