Title: Silent Pellet Trap...
Post by: thercman on July 24, 2013, 10:19:22 PM
So I am building one of these based on another post here but I am not sure how deep the duct seal should be. I'll be shooting .25 cal from my Marauder. Maybe 3"???

3" will work  at 50 yards.
20 yards......6"+
Don't forget a 16 gauge metal plate.
Trust me

I use 3 bars worth of layers safely with .22, I'd want at least 5 maybe 6 with a hot .25. I'd also make the back of the box out of 3/4 plywood covered with 1/8 steel if it were mine, the pellets will bore into the duct seal and could get out if given enough shots in the same spot.

John

Edit:

The 1/8th steel is WAY thicker than needed and HEAVY... I would use it because I have half a sheet in the shop ;) Still, a steel backer would be a good idea.

I used 2 rows of commercial carpet squares, stacked 4 squared deep inside a heavy tote. Had everything laying around to use, so basically no cost.

Most made it through the 1st layer

And all but a few were actually trapped in the 2nd layer, no way they'd ever go through 4 layers.

The carpet tiles are a great idea for my pellet trap. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to attach them to the back of the trap.

6" duct seal on my trap stops my .22 Diana 54 and .177 Diana 460   16 gauge sheet metal behind and no worries even at my 10 yard range in basement and no complaints from the lady in charge

I have already purchased 9 lbs. of duct seal but will need more to get to 6". I also will put some metal plate in the back....

You should be fine then Home Depot sells the stuff in 1lb blocks for about $2.68 a block in the electrical dept and it will last a good long while just smoosh the pellet holes on occasion  ;D

David, the targets are hiding a couple cleats made of scrap lumber that keep the squares in place, there are also 2 at the top. They just wedge the squares to the back of the tote with a slight bow (in the squares) since they're slightly taller than the inside dimensions of the tote.

Okay guys here is what I have put together so far. Currently the entire thing is being held together by super glue.... Yap you read that right. However it is all pre-drilled for screws which I need to go buy tomorrow. To improve it a bit I will countersink the holes, use a router to flush trim everything and round-over the edges. Then I will bondo the screw holes, do a quick sanding job then paint it. That last thing to do will be add some feet and a handle. Whew! Oh, sorry about the crappy images...

Or duct tape. Duct Tape works well too  ;)

I'm using a Champion .22 rimfire bullet trap and want to put a piece in the back so there is no DING. I don't think I can put cleats inside this so maybe duct tape for now.

You could cut some thin scrap lumber to wedge into place against the carpet square, or just glue it in place with some silicone caulk.

Broadside Brian,
I see cubicle walls in the background of your picture.   Are you using them as a backstop at home or are you lucky enough to be able to shoot at work?    That would be a nice perk !!

I use the same Champion bullet trap and I line the inside with duct seal. It works very well.

Not exactly, my cousin owns some property with unused office space. Makes for some good acoustics   ;)
