Accuracy Update, .25 XS28M full performance tune -Updated w/ pictures-

I signed out on leave today, so I have a little bit of time on my hands
I decided to get down to the river and get that accuracy test I promised back around Christmas time
I shot a little indoors last weekend, and it seemed a little more twitchy than usual. So, in preparation for this weekend, I removed all the stock and scope mount screws, re-applied loctite, and cranked them down real good. Sure enough, the forearm screws were a little loose. I put the old Centerpoint 3-9x32 with the fixed 50m parallax setting back on it this time around. It seems to work pretty good so far. Anyway, I grabbed a couple tins of FTT's, my tape measure, and everything else I needed and put it all in my pickle bucket and went to the river. Starting at a measured ten yards, I zeroed my scope off-hand. Then I measured exactly 100 feet from my target and set my pickle bucket upside-down for a rest. Not real stable, but it worked out alright. I fired my first 5-shot group using the artillery hold off the backs of my fingers, because Tom Gaylord posted something about that working well with hold-sensitive magnum springers. This one didn't like it, because all 5 hit the target really high in about a 2" group.
It might have been my unsteady hands though, because I had some issues shooting this way. For the second group, I started with a loose grip with my hand out by the stock screws, and I threw the first shot way out to the right. I have a hard time holding steady with a loose grip on the stock. So I switched to a firm, neutral grip on the stock, and put 5 shots into a 1"group between centers- 4 of them touching in a cluster about half that size
After that, I posted up a fresh target and tried standing off-hand with the death grip. I threw the first shot waaaay high because I was squeezing too tight and I pulled it
So i took a short break, and tried again standing off-hand, just holding the stock- not a death grip, not dead soft- just neutral, same way I sometimes hold my M4. This yielded about a 15/16" group, all holes touching with two in the same hole
After that, I cranked the elevation down 12 clicks, set my winchester shooting bag up on my wobbly rest, and tried a ten-shot group just laying the gun directly on the rest. I threw the first one way out to the right, then I threw the second one way out to the left, so I re-adjusted my makeshift rest on top of two logs to be a little less wobbly and prevent having to hunch over and crane my neck from my seated position
.
The next ten shots went into a group that measured 1 and 7/16" between centers. Off a wobbly rest, just laying the gun right on the bag!
I am not that great of a springer shooter anymore, either. I just don't have the time to practice that I had a few years back. The gun was still zeroed a little high at 100 feet, about right where I wanted it, so I set up some empty pellet tins and whatever litter I could find in the vicinity to use for targets. I paced off about another ten yards, and proceeded to drill everything I shot at- regardless of how I held the gun.
I think it is a little bit hold sensitive, but really not bad. If you look at my groups, you'll notice the POA doesn't vary much between resting on bags or standing off-hand, even with a little bit of variation in my grip. I tried the artillery hold, pulling tight to my shoulder, and the firm neautral grip, and it didn't really matter. I think that once I master this rifle and understand it's quirks, that 1 and 7/16" ten-shot group at 100 feet is going to shrink considerably. The most important thing is just to hold it steady and follow-through. Inside of 45 yards, this rifle is a bunnie's worst nightmare. I have shot springers that put out about half the power that this gun does, that were a lot more hold sensitive. I am very pleased with the rifle so far. I really haven't even done any pellet testing yet. I've tried Peak pellets (garbage), #3 buckshot (o.k. but hard to load) and FTT's (Awesome!) I am thinking about trying JSB Kings, but the FTT's shoot pretty flat and I don't know if a slightly more accurate pellet that is also a little heavier is going to give me any advantage in the field. I will get back to the river during leave and work on how to hold this beast before attempting to group at 50 yards. I believe that with a little practice, this gun is easily capable of putting 5 shots into an inch at 50 yards. I can't wait to try!
edit- pics to follow!
edit- also, according to Chairgun, with my measured scope height of 1.75" and a measured poi of 0.23" low at 10 yards and 0.71" high at 33 yards with 20 grain FTT's, it should be pushing btween 770 and 775 FPS for 26.3-26.7 FPE. The trajectory should peak 0.83" above the POA at 27-28 yards. The FPE numbers seem a little high, but I think they are close. Wish I hadn't shot my chrony! I get some batteries, run it over my shot up chrony, and try to read the numbers later on today...

What tune option did you select for this gun if you don't mind me asking?

Pretty good results. Don't forget, that with hold sensitive springers its not just what hold you use, but finding the hold it likes and then practicing it consistently. It'll get better.

Paul, how well does your 350 mag group when shot directly off a bag, in comparison to shooting it the way it like to be held? The reason I'm asking, is because I 'd like to know how my Chinese clone measures up to it's german cousin with a similar tune...

My 28 was actually more accurate than my Diana, but it had a full tune while the Diana had a basic lube and new seal. Both could do a dime sized group at 25 -35 yards depending on how well I was shooting that day. Both of mine preferred a tight trigger hand grip and resting the front loosely on my palm. I never use a bag, and when using a rest still only rest the gun in my hands while using a rest to steady my arms.

Got back down to the river today, but I couldn't group very well. Barely minute of a pellet tin at 100 feet, and it seemed like my zero was changing every few shots, so i had to keep making adjustments. I tightened the stock screws with loctite a week ago, so i figured it might be the scope. When I got home I took off the scope and put the irons back on, and proceeded to stack #3 buckshot at about ten yards. I am out of FTT's
. Oh well. At least I was able to salvage about 30 rounds of nice, uniform, unfired #3 buck out of my scrap lead. I have a ton of scrap, too. Thinking about attempting to mould my own buckshot, but I doubt it will turn out as good as ballistic products' #3 buck. Time to try some new pellets I guess. Next batch is either gonna be 4 tins of JSB kings, or an 8 ibs jar of #3 buck. Decisions, decisions...

Any improvement in accuracy?
Iron sights with JSB Kings and I am back inside 1" at 100 feet. Hitting the 1" spinner every time if I do my part. With a good scope maybe better, but I won't get back out to shoot it, or even access GTA, for a year or so.

Well, I am on leave once again, so I shot a few groups with the XS28M to update this review. Paul was right, it gets better with time. I shot these groups indoors at my meager 7 yard range. The larger groups are I don't know how many shots, but more then ten apiece and from different positions but mostly either standing offhand, standing leaning against a door, or standing and shooting off sticks. They both measure about 1/4" ctc. That last group was just 5 shots, fired from a experimental rest I made of pool noodles and pvc pipe. It is about 1/8" ctc. The POI is actually 6 'o' clock to the bullseye, but the image resizer rotated them and I can't straighten em out without making the files larger. I included a picture of the rest.
I intend to set a table up in the woods to stretch it out and see what she can do this week. Maybe if I am lucky I can link up with a GTA brother to verify my results and have a little fun. I have a new set of 1" spinners I am dying to play with, plus another set of spinners and several 3 hour energy bottles and things like that I saved up for reactive targets. I can't wait to get out of the house!

I made it out to the "range" monday before last. Would have posted sooner, but I needed to resize the photos and stuff, and it takes me a little while. I have not had a chance to wring out any of my rifles in awhile, so I measured off exactly 20 yards and set my table up behind the marker. I concentrated on three main rifles. I did some pellet testing for the 2100 and dialed her in, I set up my Stoeger X3 for my little girl, and I experimented with a few different holds with my XS28M and dialed her in for squirrel season.
This gun is very accurate, and the trigger is very nice. After spending so much time learning to use the trigger in the 2100 and the X3, I actually had issues adjusting to the light, crisp trigger of this rifle. After you take up the first stage, there is a definite stop at the second stage. When I think about tripping the second stage, it goes off. Very nice, but after you settle in and take up the first stage, I advise you not to take another breath before you trip the second stage! I experimented with a few different holds before I settled on reaching out by the front stock screws and holding it softly. This is the most forgiving spot to hold this rifle, and yields the most consistent accuracy for me, with this sample of this rifle. I don't grip it, but I don't do anything unnaturally "soft"- I just relax and don't squeeze it. Just enough grip to hold steady and follow through. The gun is dialed in at 20 yards with a 6 'o' clock hold. I prefer the 6 'o' clock zero for hunting because I can hit the kill zone further without holdover and it makes it easier to follow through and witness the impact on game. Plus it's how I learned to shoot and how I've continued to shoot since age 6 (I just turned 36).
For accuracy testing I used the center hold technique with my 6 'o' clock zero. I couldn't see the black front sight post against the black background that well, but I wanted to use the smaller white center for my aim point. Aim small, miss small
Here is what a tuned Chinese springer is capable of, once it has been broken in. This gun pushes JSB Kings about 700 feet per second for about 26 fpe.
It will put 5 inside a dime at 20 yards, if you do your part. I called the far left outlier, it was my fault. Remember, this is with the open sights.
For the doubters, I put 5 more into the group. I am not sure what caused the slight outlier at 12 o clock, it may have been me or maybe a damaged pellet, but I don't believe I threw it out.
Still, including that one and my miss, it's about .9" ctc. If you exclude my miss, you can cover ten shots with a nickel. Exluding the two outliers, left and high, that is 9 under a dime.
The one outside the black, high and left, was a bad miss by me. I did not count it with the group. I am not used to the trigger on this gun- the second stage is so light and crisp I squeezed it off on a deep breath! The Crosman 2100 is the one I shoot the most here lately, and the trigger on that gun is a single loooong creepy stage.
With the XS28M, I can drill the 1" spinners at will from 20 yards.
It is hold sensitive, but so accurate that I can hold it almost any which way and still hit a 1 inch target from 20 yards. And this is a 26 fpe breakbarrel.
Tight or soft, bench rested, or whatever. As long as I keep my off hand near the front stock screws, I hit the spinner. The difference is, if you are consistent, it will shoot dimes. Remember, this is just a a $200 Chinese springer. With Mike Melick's full tune, actually $300. It costs a little more in .25 cal, but you should hear the pellets when they smack
I broke this gun in on mostly JSB kings, and they are the only pellet I've used in it in a long while.
I haven't even attempted a pellet test with this rifle. I have used FTT'S, JSB Kings, cheap Chinese pellets that came with the rifle, and some malformed #3 buckshot from the cheapest shells I could get. Since she has been fully and properly broken in, I think she has only seen JSB Kings. I am saving the rest of the Kings for squirrels, since I already dialed her in on them. I have a few tins of H&N on the way for testing, more to come:)
I would like to give a shout out to Mike Melick of Flying Dragon Air Rifles. No marketing or gimmicks. Just rock solid, accurate, affordable air rifles. A tuned springer from Mike is still the absolute best value in airguns
Edit- couldn't post the pics right side up. The top of the targets face to the left
