Just picked this Benjamin up from GunBroker for a Benjamin ..... as in $100.
Am I reading the date correctly - Jan 1997?
More pics to follow.

Yes your correct.
My Benjamin 392 starts with 999 or Sept of 99. Well worth $100, better rifle than the new ones and the stocks walnut. Post a picture of the whole gun.

Finally had a chance to get it out and play. Cleaned it up a bit, gave it some secret sauce (was dry as a bone) and installed a Williams peep. It shoots strong, but I have not set up any target yet to see how it groups.

I didn't know it had a cartridge valve. Have not had it apart. I saw a post on here that said the distance from the front screw of the trigger guard to the take-down screw is different between the soldered valve and the cartridge. I just looked, and this 397 is different from the older 392 I have.
The GB auction starting bid was $100, and that is what I bid. I fully expected to get outbid, but it didn't happen. Shipping was $35, so total cost was $135. I already had the Williams peep that had never been used.
And wouldn't you know it, last week I saw a first variant S397 on the AA classifieds. Was an old ad, but I emailed the seller and the rifle was still available. So.... it should be arriving at my house Tuesday.

This is a 1" target dot shot at approx 19 yards from a wobbly patio table with cheapo bag front and rear. Pellet is JSB Exact Heavy Diabolo 10.34 gr at 3 pumps. Easily shot through double layer of thick corrugated cardboard and embedded into the tree bark. Shoulda used a backup board.
Not too bad for me, especially using a peep sight. I am sure it would get better with a scope. Perfectly adequate for plinking as is. Need to clean paint out of the muzzle (thought that was only an issue on newer rifles) and try a few different pellets.

That's silver 397 looks nice. Yea my 397p so far likes all the pellets I tried in her. It really likes the lead free predators. I'm sure it won't do well beyond 20 yards. I'll get some groups up tonight.

Thanks. I thought so too.
Will know for sure tomorrow when I receive it, but I believe the serial number is 694xxxxxx which should be June '94. I do know for sure it is a 397P and was made in Bloomfield.

Here's a picture of both 397s together -
Decided to move the Williams peep to the silver rifle and mount a scope to the black one. If the black rifle shoots as good as I expect it will, it may get a few simple performance mods.
Hmmmm, need to get the big brother 392 put back together and get a picture of the whole family.

Try some crosman premier ultramags, 10.5 grain.my 397PA stacks them. If they work, they're a lot cheaper than the jsb's.
