Problem with Vantage (Quest/B-19) tune

After several distractions, I finally put my Remington Vantage 1200 back together. There is quite a bit of roughness when cocking and when moving the barrel back and forth after cocking. It appears that the end of the cocking lever is rubbing along the mainspring. I installed a Maccari E3650 spring, which is larger in diameter than the stock spring and is a fairly snug fit inside the piston, but I can remember some of the same feeling with the stock spring.
Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem? It feels bad, and can't be good for the spring. Any help is appreciated.

Polish up the inside of the cocking shoe, the part that touches the spring.
The only other way is to make a piston sleeve, but that too, would require you to polish the cocking shoe

Thanks for the reply, kid. By "cocking shoe" do you mean the little bent-over tabs (ears) that keep the cocking lever/rod thing retained inside the cylinder?
Looking at the design, I see that there is no feature to keep the shoe from falling into the piston except for the spring itself. I can see that this is how a piston sleeve would help, by covering the slot in the piston and separating the shoe and the spring coils. How thick would the sleeve need to be?
Short of making a sleeve, I'm thinking that I could grind and polish these ears a bit to thin them down to allow more room between the spring coils and the ears. It seems that this would at least help on the return stoke, but on the cocking stroke, the geometry of the linkage is such that the shoe is forced in toward the spring (for a portion of the stroke). I've thought of a roller on the linkage that would keep the shoe out away from the spring, but a sleeve sounds easier, if there is room between the spring and piston. The piston ID is .805", and the spring OD is .755" (uncompressed). So the sleeve could only be .020" thick max. And what is a good material?
What do you think?

The ears can be polished to prevent them from grinding into the compression tube slot.
I am speaking of the underside, it will be wide and flat. The design has a slight flaw, when you break the barrel, you change the angle relationship of the shoe to the spring. Now the tip of the shoe is catching the spring coils.
I have made simple sleeves, out of dishwashing liquid containers.
Fairly strong and lasts for a long time. I just put some heavy tar in the piston in different areas, then cut the plastic to fit inside and the edges line up pressing the whole thing against the piston. Make sure the slit goes to the back of the piston.
The plastic bottles I use are Dawns clear ones...it measure .026"
I do not have the ability or tools to make one from tin/steel.

Rounded and polished. The cycling is much smoother in both directions, but not perfect. It will do for now, though, as I'm not in the mood to take the gun apart again, yet. I'll leave sleeving the piston as a future improvement.
Thanks again for the advice.
