Title: Walther Talon Magnum w/ nitro piston vs Benjamin Trail np xl
Post by: JJ1514 on January 30, 2012, 08:33:01 PM
Hi, I am a new member here and I'm looking to get a new gun. I have narrowed it down between 2 choices, the walther talon magnum with nitro piston or the benjamin trail np xl. Which one would you reccomend? Thank you  ;)

Welcome to GTA !

First of all, I would recommend deciding if you prefer a conventional stock or a thumb-hole stock.

Next, decide if you prefer a wooden stock or a composite stock.

The NP XL will need an aftermarket trigger blade ( $32.00 shipped - GRT-III from Charlie Da Tuna ), while the WTM's trigger is adjustable from the factory.

Since the initial investment price ( $300.00 ) is identical, that is not an issue.

In my opinion, those are the things to decide first.

How long you been shooting airguns?
What is the primary purpose of this Airgun, target shooting, hunting and pesting, both?

Welcome to Gta

I have the np xl and you'll need to invest on a bushing and washer kit they sell here on the forum. as for the trigger it'll take time to getting use too or get the grt trigger as Dave said.I have no idea on the walther talon someone will chime in on it soon.I really like my np xl with jsb 18 grain ammo. Here's a 20 yard group with my xl the group on the left is a 10 shot setting.

Also, which caliber ( .177, .22, .25 ) are you considering ?

Sorry for not being specific, I am considering .177 or .22, I will be using it for targets and pest control, I know the .22 is more effective for hunting, but I like the .177 flatter trajectory. I have been shooting the same airgun for 2 years (crosman phantom). I like the wooden stock more, but i'll take performance over looks. Why would I need a bushing and washer kit? Thank you for your help ;)

walther talon hunter all the way in 22cal.needs no trigger upgrade has a quattro, has a sas,and is dead nut accurate out of the box, mine was,and it was a spring gun then, now its a np,and its only 209,00 at air gun depot new,i would suggest you get one it 22cal.and use your phantom 177cal for plinking,i love mine.but the xl100 is imo a nice looking air gun,but i like thumb hole stock,si think the talon is more powerful, also you might want to consider a mike melick tuned b-28 or 25cal,he,s having a sale on the 25cal right now at flying dragon air guns, good luck choosing ;there are so many great options out there; ;D

Since your application is target shooting & pest control, with a preference for .177 caliber and a wooden stock, I would recommend the Benjamin Trail NP XL 1500 over the Walther Talon Magnum,

I have a Crosman Nitro Venom ( wood stock ) in .22 caliber with a GRT-III trigger, but I am looking to get a Talon Magnum / Hatsan 125 ( same gun ), most likely in .22 caliber ( I have been looking at .25 ) and modify it for considerably more power, via a 180 bar gas ram swap, strictly as a hunting rifle.

For your application and needs, the Trail NP XL should be a great rifle !

Mick ( Supertech77 ) has a modified Talon Magnum that performs in the range I am looking for. It is a real "cannon", yet very accurate . . .

Just the np xl's as far as I know of it makes a world of difference on the shot cycle. Go on the search bar above and type in np xl1100 and read up on the gun .

I have read up on both, I have heard that the stock on the walther is hollow.I like the wooden stock on the benjamin, I have also heard that the benjamin had a lot of recoil. Does anyone know how the recoil its on the walthr does the sas make any difference
Thanks

Recoil on The Talon is much less than the NP XL

Just fill the Talon stock with expandable foam, works great.

Question the kit. were do I order it from and how does it cost. I have a xl 22.
I did a mod on the trigger and its like a new gun. 98 cent bag of screws. replaced the short screw.
Wow what a change.

expandable foam? how do you keep it out of the spring? I also have the hunter. Do not the hollow stock at all.

in the talon magnum or falcon hunter, fill the buttstock with it.  it can't get into the spring from there.  the butt is hollow, fill it with something and it dampens vibration pretty good, plus it sounds much nicer when shot.  eliminates "hollow"noise.  i had a .25 talon mag that i filled with colorplace all purpose silicone sealant (actually about half the weight of regular caulk, but heavier than foam obviously).  turned out really well, balanced the gun much better for the artillery hold.  had to sel it though.

I would say the talon  i sen pics  of how accurate and powerful it is and  i suggest the .22
talon is a magnum it will shoot far powerful and accurate
Personally i am getting the Tech force 89 .22 it is deadly accurate too cronys  in at 780 feet per secon  and it has a awesome wood stock with very nice checkering
its on you tube its only 159.00 @ pyramid air
I already have the RWS 350 .22  so the T F 89 is  like its younger brother
you could also get a RWS 350 .22  I seen them for 350.00 plus shipping

go to you tube and put in your different rifles in the search box
and see what Rick Ustlers  reviews of them  say
take your time and again I highly recommend the ,22  always for magnums  there more stable and have much greater down range energy and knock down power
