Title: AirgunReporter vs. AirgunWeb
Post by: Shoot Straight on August 24, 2011, 12:47:54 PM
Does anyone else like Airgunweb more than Airgunreporter? I also like Airgunreporter but all they do is really only tell you the good stuff it's almost like every gun they use is perfect, but on the other hand I like how Rick at Airgunweb tells it like it is and isn't afraid to do so. He has really helped me out in the air gun world. If anyone else has an opinion on this topic please share.

I enjoy both reviewers as they both are very thorough and pass on very good information.  That being said though I would have to admit that I prefer Ricks / Airgunweb reviews much more for the simple reason that if he finds something wrong with the gun, or something that he just doesn't like, he doesn't "beat around the bush" or "tap dance" around it he just comes straight out and tells you what the problem is.  I really respect that quality in his reviews.  I'm not saying or implying in any way that Airgunreporter reviews intentionally leave out "negative" information but I have noticed that it's seems like a real rare occurrence to hear any "negative" information noted during airgunreporter reviews.  I will continue to value reviews by both reviewers, but when "push comes to shove" I personally give much more credence to the reviews posted by Rick.

I'm also a Rick Eutsler fan and have made most purchases based on his reviews of products and have not been disappointed yet. Have donated a few bucks to help with his production costs. But I like airgun reporter too and wish I could watch the TV series he has on one of the hunting channels. Rick=facts, not "Fluff" ;D

I like them both, as well.  You can tell the effects of "sponsorship"...but hey...seems like everyone does it, (pitch the pluses, sell the sizzle, etc.),,,unless there's a glaring problem.  I also have looked back at P.A. website, for Tom Gaylord's blogs about AGs. He does a pretty good job IMO, but they aren't in video.  Generally, they are good reading.

IMO, Rick has gotten better and more in depth in his reviews. I do also like his more "candid" commentary. Paul Cappello has some very well made videos. There is a difference (in Paul's') in the early stuff versus the later stuff. I wish Rick would do more reviews, sometimes it's several months between. I understand that they both are sponsored by PA, but calling a lemon a lemon (the airgun, not the sponsor) IMO, doesn't reflect negatively on the sponsor. That's just being honest. One thing I dislike about Rick compared to Paul, is Rick usually does not restrain the barrel of a break barrel rifle, when cocking and loading. I know it's nit picky, but that is an example that he should make more often.

AGR has good production value, AGW has a more "down-home" look to it but... I like both. Rick tends to make note of small issues or features he doesn't like and that can be good info for the buyer. Paul... not so much. AGR is more product promotion with data than pros/cons kind of review.

Both guys do good work and provide valuable service to the AG crowd.

I made a negative comment a year or so back about Rick. Should of kept my mouth shut..:) Not nice to slam our airgun brothers and I did cross the line. Since then he gave up his membership here on the GTA and moved on.

At that time from viewing both Rick's and Paul's video reviews I felt that Paul's presentation was much more professional. Plus he emphasized safety which I had not seen from Rick's reviews. As time has past Rick has been more thorough and is being more assertive with his reviews. More objective, and even adds safety to his video's now...:) That is good and like Jeff mentioned we don't want to buy something that has been reported to be good, when it isn't.

I still prefer Paul's presentations only for the reason he has more experience with the way he puts his stuff together. Yes Paul should start being more objective with his reviews.

I do admit that I watch  allot more of Ricks reviews now just because of his objectiveness. Rick has come a long ways since he first started and I commend him for that. And I will keep watching for his newer reviews that he puts out.

I guess I owe Rick and apology but I will understand if he does not accept.. Keep up the good work Rick. After all Rick is one of us but he gets to play wiff new bb guns more than most of us..:)

All you can do is extend it.  It's admirable that you offered this up....many wouldn't have ever stood up, but would have hoped it would be forgotten.  Kudos.

I like Rick better, but both are good.

I think Rick needs a bit more support. For that matter both reviewers need to review all guns. Not just the one their sponsor has. But I realize that's the way the business world works. It's not always in favor of those who should matter most; the consumer. Rick has come a long way and I really enjoy his reviews. I wish him well in the future.

Keith.

Gene, that's what makes you a Gentleman. It takes a big man to admit a mistake and then publicly apologize, but what you said wasn't near as bad as the other guy. But, he's the internet airgun guru and is above apologizing,so I really don't expect to see one from him.
I guess that's what makes the GTA what it is,The Best on the Net.

The question is will Rick ever "hear" the apology....

I like bot too. Any good info on airguns is great to see. I agree with most here though that rick gives a great honest take on the products and reports problems or issues to the public, instead of giving only the good info about the products. Rick gives facts not fluff, paul seems more like he is trying to "sell" the items, which is probly the case. That is likely what he is hired to do. Pauls videos have a more professional look and feel to them, and I really do appreciate that. Ricks production is not Bad, just not as good. I think that I like Teds videos better than both of these guys though actually lol.

I used to watch em both but soon started feeling like I was watching a commercial. I don't watch much TV and don't like commercials.

With that said if they bring more in to the hobby then good on them.

I've been waiting on commenting on this thread. they each bring new shooters into the folds, which is a great thing. Like a lot have pointed out, Paul's production quality is great. but i feel he never reviews anything he doesn't like, which makes me feel like he's selling and not reviewing. He dose walk you threw the features and plinks them a bit.
Rick also gets his demo guns from PA, but feel I'm actually watching a review and not a sales pitch. i want pros's and con's in a review. I think Rick is more forth coming with his reviews. Try and post a question on one of Ricks videos....he's answered all of the ones I've posted, and that goes a long way with me. so i like both and feel both are helping the AG community alot
i wish Rick would rejoin the fold of the GTA, and i wish Paul would pop bye to say hello more often.........my 2 cents Bart

Don't get me wrong I do like AirgunReporter too because how much better the quality of videos are. But I have learned more from Rick.

I've also always liked Ricks reviews as well, and also the fact that he always answers your posts. Now I really like Paul's as well and haven't missed one.I've not got a post answered either out of 3,BUT,,I do know he has American Airgunner too,,so I give him a pass as he's probably full to the brim.

I hope Rick dos come back as leaving here isn't something I'd do again, but I do Love this place a lot too,so I'm Biased. You can't do no more than Apologize,,and if he doesn't come back,,well there's nothing a person can do about that.Believe me,,I've made bigger mistakes than this one Gene,Recently too, lol.

Ok.. First of all.. Gene, I extend my apologies to you and to the GTA for my the ill will that I've held over the past few years.   My issues with GTA are much less regarding you and more about someone else.  I hope that you will accept my apologies as I truly accept yours.

I received a call from a good friend of mine and member of the GTA that said I must come read this "right now."  As I read these comments and what folks have to say. I sit truly humbled.

I must say thank you to everyone for everything.  I have been working for the last several years to make Airguns a full time job.  During the process I've had a lot to learn and I'm still learning.  (yes I'll eventually remember to hold the barrel when loading a gun.. :) )  When I look at some of my early videos, I cringe, but they still have some value if for no other reason then to remind me where I started.

I want everyone to know that I'm committed to bring you good and the bad with what I have the privilege to review.   I just signed a 1 year agreement with PA to produce 3 videos per month plus provide other support services.  This makes airguns a full time job for me, a dream come true after years of very hard, sometimes painful, work.

For those that know me personally you'll know that I'm speaking truthfully when I say that I really am humbled when I read this page.

I want to mention that had it not been for Tom Gaylord and Paul Capello I would not be where I am.  Tom gave me the "foot in the door" opportunity I needed and Paul demonstrated how powerful video reviews can be.  So I take my hat off to both of them.

Sincerely,

Rick Eutsler

Rick Eutsle's reviews and this forum has instilled in me a love for this sport and for the fine people that I have met on this forum. Mike Melick and Randy Atchley have went above board to help me in selecting air rifles and answering my crazy questions. I got back into this sport because of a friend of mind and when I went to review an air rifle, I found AirGun Web. Rick has been a big help to me. If I send him an email, he answers it promptly. If I call him, he takes the time out to help me. I have had not had any contact with Paul, but I like his reviews also. Tom Gaylord is a wealth of knowledge. Gene is such a definitive and powerful voice in this sport. I am proud to be associated and partake in a sport where there are so many exceptional and good people.

Welcome back to the forum Rick :)

Congrats on your contract with PA, I've always looked forward to your reviews and will continue to do so.

Any chance you can get your hands on a "Rogue" and give us one of your honest, real world reviews ?

Again, very nice to have you back with us :)

I'm not sure about the Rogue.  I've asked Crosman and they've told me that I'm "on the list".. not quite sure where I am on the list... lol.. or which list that is ;)

But I'm sure I'll eventually get one.  I finally got a Marauder pistol.. that video, along with one on the RWS 34p Pro Compact will be up next week..

Cheers

Welcome back Rick!

Thanks for reassuring us that your reviews will remain "objective" even though you have signed a contract with P/A.  Congrats on the contract award btw!  3 videos per month is a lot.  You will be busy for a while, but busy is good :)

I agree Harry, that "objective" quality is very refreshing when watching an airgun review.  I enjoy the reviews from the "professional" reviewers but it's usually very easy to see that they are trying to make their employer happy.  I understand that they are as they say "between a rock and a hard place" but that's one of the reasons I've always valued Ricks reviews because if there's something about the product that he didn't like he always just threw it out there for all to see.  :)

As the others have said, WELCOME back Rick. Congrats on the move (I hope), the contract with PA and your hard work paying off. It's great to earn a living at what you love to do. Just be careful and don't let the making a living thing get in the way of your love of the sport. And it can happen.
Keep up the great job with your candid and honest reviews. Production has improved 1000% and we have noticed and appreciate that. THANK YOU for what you do for our hobby/sport!!!!
Happy Shooting!!!!

Probably the bottom of the list..... IF the gun you get has some of the issues that some others have posted about here and on the Yellow, I hate to say it, but Crosman may not want you to review one till they get some of the bugs worked out. A bad review of the Rogue from you, could carry a lot of weight and steer potential buyers away.............

I've seen EVERY video of Pyramyd Air Report, AirgunWeb, EdgunUSA, and Hunters Vermin. They all bring inspiration to me.
