I'm no springer shooting pro but I have shot many different spring guns for 30 years and the single biggest mistake I see someone who has never shot one make is to hold and shoot it like a "real" gun. As others have said how you are holding it makes a world of difference. Once a newbe has been told the correct way to shoot one it seem they always over think it and try to hard which a lot of the time just makes the shooting worse and the shooter madder. Just hold it lightly and shoot, let it do it's thing, you'll hit what your shooting at quicker than you think. Most have to break the habit of trying to shoot it like it was a 300win mag, yes they recoil a little but a lot of new shooters react and tighten up just as the shoot which screws up the whole thing.
Here's a example......A guy I work with wanted a couple good pellet guns for him and his boys to shoot, kids are 10 and 12? He was tiered of the plastic $50 pump guns, he asked about getting one like my break barrels with more power and more metal. He came over and I let him shoot a couple different guns to see what they were like and he was impressed with the power but couldn't hit anything with it. I explained everything to him, how to hold it lightly etc. and then watched him shoot another 20 times and shoot worse every time. The harder he tried the madder he got and the worse he shot, I had him take a time out a few times. I told him to just hold it resting in his palm, just keep his forward hand flat, pull it up get on target and shoot it without taking all the time trying to get it just right. After another 20'ish pellets of him doing better and shooting quicker he started shooting better. I could see him tighten up just as he was shooting when he took his time, when he shot quicker he wasn't thinking about it as much. Long story short he ended up buying 3 Titan rifles three weeks ago, he says hes getting better at hitting stuff but the boys only needed to shoot 20 pellets to hit about anything anywhere, kinda tweeks him a little I think. They didn't have to be retrained from shooting a normal gun but he did to a certain extent. As with most things there is a learning curve, if it starts to wear on you just take a time out, don't try so hard, it will work out.
