Anybody take their Airgun backpacking? I would love a nice squirrel/rabbit stew out on the trail1
Any tips?
And Do people usually bring AG rifles, or is there a good pistol for taking small game?

If I had the spare cash for another gun, let's say a designated air backpacker, I'd go the Crosman 1377 or 1322 route. You can buy add-ons for them and make a pretty nice compact shooter. They also have their Co2 2400 or 2250, that can be customized...if that's your thing.

I bought a 2240 with a removable stock, but am looking for a 1322 and eventually want to get one of those Hatsan break barrel pistols. All three seem very well suited. At the price point I think the 1322 is probably a great packing choice although you have to make the first shot count. I'm sorta waiting for them to go on sale at Big 5 or a used one to drop in my lap. The Hatsan is big and long, but the good 22XXs are also like that. The 1322 is only about 13" long and very easy to pack. I may pick one up and keep it in the car.

i have several that are packable. multiple 1377 and 1322s. 3 2240 in different configurations modified. a 2250 modified.evanix pistol in 22. evanix takedown in 22,and a talonp are all compact enough to get er done. also have a browning 800 mag in 177 but it stopped cocking, i gotta take it apart and see what's wrong with the trigger mechanism.

I have 2 guns suited for backpacking....
1322 I just bought, 14 inch bbl and flatop piston/valve.
12 pumps gets me ~ 500 fps and 15 pumps gets me 530. this is more than enough to take rabbits and squirrel at distances to about 30 yds.
The pistol is long, and very front heavy, but fairly powerful and self contained. Can be left pumped up, and one in the hole ready if need be.
2nd is an HB .22 benji. Similar to the crosman 1322, but more compact. Gets around 410 fps on 10 pumps with normal weight pellets. Quality build, and just a nice pistol.
Both are quite accurate, have better accuracy than I have the ability to supply at distance.
The 13 series is still to new to me to have hunted, but the power out and accuracy tell me it can do it to 30.
the HB has taken many rabbits, out to about 25 yds, but the longer shots sometimes need a follow up shot.
I prefer pump guns, they are not quite as sensitive to temperature, and you can shoot till your arms fall off from pumping.

My list is just like the others...1377 or 1322. My 1377 has the shoulder stock,metal breach, and a 4x32 scope that can and does drops squirrels out to 25 yards in 1 shot! Condisering all i would need for them is lead...im good to go :) Now if i know i have my truck close by and i could refill when low, my prod would never leave my side. Its earned its keep on jacks out to 44 yards with 1 well placed shot. The extra power range and fast follow up shot if needed more than justifies her size and weight.

Big five had them on sale last winter for $45 (1377,1322) and there was a $10 coupon floating about for $35+tax. I'm hoping for a similar circumstance this year or perhaps picking up a used one.

I agree that the most common type of backpacker gun is going to be a 13xx or a 22xx. I own both and in 4 guises. depends the room available and how "discreet" i need to be i can take them down to pistols or pack the shoulder stock. But i find that the ranges i might hunt are reduced enough to use them as pistols. But the ultimate backpacker in my mind has to be a modified crosman 1400 with a folding stock a la m14 paratrooper carbine (ooops, divulged too much). That can fit inside most day packs, it is self contained and it will take down game at a reasonable distance with some serious power, as well as being dead nuts reliable.

I second the 1322 with flat top conversion and add the 14" barrel. Hard hitting yet quiet with no worries of having to carry pump or CO2 source.

My 1322 just underwent a bbl swap with a 24 inch, but before I swapped it....
Was getting ~ inch groups at 25 yds with it, and with the 14 inch bbl, it was putting out ~10 ftlbs with 15 pumps.
It was still long for a pistol......not one that I would want to backpack for days with....just because it looks hard to holster.
But it definitely has the power of a small rifle available.
Really for small and light....I still go with the HB .22 for something that packs easily.
I just this past weekend setup my 2400 with the 14 inch bbl and a hipac extension. Makes for a 17 inch pistol, so not short....but it is a hunting pistol. No shoulder stock. It gets 10 ftlbs with Kodiaks in .22 cal.....
drops about 20 fps over a spread of 10 shots.
I can take a benji pump with me on the back of the 4 wheeler, and in 10 pumps I will be back up 1800psi.....so after the initial fill at home from the tank.....10 pumps for 10 shots, not bad math there by any stretch.
this is a hunting pistol with a base nearby, or a 4 wheeler close by. You would not want to pack a pump in somewhere,IMO.
I plan on putting a boss valve in the gun, and a power adjustor.
Would ultimately like to have a setup that will allow for 12 fpe on HPA or c02, so I can carry a couple of carts in my pocket IF I get into the situation where I take more than 10 shots hunting (not likely) but still a good backup.
Can remove the HIPAC and run carts in an emergency.
I have been doing a TON of pistol hunting lately.

Also on the HB22, does it have a noticable power drop from the 1322? seems like u could add a lot of mods to a 1322 to get to the same price point as an hb22.. so what is the initial advantage of the hb22? thx guys.

the HB22 is unrelated to the 1322. the 1322 comes from a long line of pumpers starting with the crosman 130. In a rival company, Benjamin was realesing their pumpers (2series pistols) that eventually culminated on the HB series. Power level was similar til the 1322 of yesteryear came out... about 400 on 10 pumps (even though benji never wanted you to pump pass 8...). The new one seems to be a little hotter settling on about 425 fps with 10 pumps. stock, the hb is nicer all around (twice the price shows...) but the 1322 with a bout another 100 dollars wins hands down. but even if you throw 1000 bucks at it... it will never feel like the pistol I shot as a child... the HB20
