Questions about cleaning air rifles

I finally got the neatsfoot and silicone oil and put a couple of drops in the old Diana 35. (it turned out to be a Winchester 435- it was just faintly marked and my aging eyes needed lots of light to see it
)This is the first time I've broken the breach, and I noticed that there's a good bit of old dust and a little bit of grimy looking stuff at the breach area and under the stock- it looks like it's probably just from sitting up and no being handled much, if I were to guess. What's the best way to clean old air rifles externally? I got a cleaning kit for bore-cleaning- it's the one with what looks like small steel cable that has a loop for pulling pads and a small brush that looks like brass. I bought some of the Goof-Off (?) to use based on another posters recommendation on another thread.
Anyway, are there any do's and don'ts for cleaning this AR externally?

From the info I gather here, you do not want to use a metal brush of any kind in the bore.

On a fine old gun like that one Liz, i'd spend a bunch of time with oiled qtips, cleaning everything that could be reached. Making sure of course to get none in the compression area of the breech, which would be dangerous. Some oils really clean well, others might mention what they use, mine is mil-spec stuff and when my last bottles gone i'll be missing it for sure.
I wash my old wood stocks sparingly with murphy wood oil soap and dry them quick, them olde english them. Brings out the shine and smells nice

goo gone and weed wacker line wiff patches Liz. Best thing you can do for cleaning a barrel. Brass and metal brush's could damage lands. If you really want to scrub it with brush I recommend a nylone cleaning brush made for your caliber barrel. Use with goo gone. After you clean her up real good run several dry patches through bore to remove any excess goo gone..
WIth the silicone oil and neats foot oil just a couple drops down the front hole of action. Let it sit with barrel up in corner for 24 hours to let it soak into leather seal.
Best of luck

Make sure you use Goo-Gone, not Goof-off which can harm your seals.

Externally, if the metal is "gummy" from old, dried lubes, I use Goo-gone on a soft cloth or Q-tips (for small or tricky areas). Allow it to dry really well afterward, then wipe down with a very light coat of a decent oil like Hoppes or CLP. Really, a VERY light coat.
You have to be sure not to get any petroleum-based lubes in the chamber or on any synthetic seals (not that hard, just be careful and use small amounts).

I'm sold on Ballistol, I use it for everything, barrel, outside, wood, trigger and pivot points

Thanks everyone- glad I didn't use the stuff I got yet for the barrel- should have written it down instead of using my memory.

Recently I have started using dry patches to clean my barrels and have found that it improves accuracy while not requiring the "releading" procedure where I have to fire a few dozen rounds through the gun to regain a consistent poi. I simply continue to pull dry cloth patches through the barrel until they come out clean. It saves a lot of time and pellets.
