GREAT NEWS!
Before I go to bed tonight I want to share some really good news with everyone here that loves Sumatra's.
I was able to get to the range today and shoot my Sumatra with her new factory O.E.M. barrel with a 1-16" twist; and also she is wearing her brand new butt stock with the adjustable cheek rest. Before I tell a little about the range results let me explain briefly how this came about, and how you guys can obtain these also if you desire.
During the last year and a half I have been obsessed with the pursuit of obtaining a barrel for my Sumatra with a faster twist rate. This was a totally fruitless and frustrating odyssey that left me pretty much hopeless. But at the beginning of this year I thought of one last thing to try, and thanks be to God and Boris and Eun Jin it worked! I spoke to Boris, Pyramyd Air's Senior Gun Tech, at the beginning of January and explained at length all I had gone through in trying to get a barrel with a faster twist rate for my gun. I also explained what I considered to be sound reasons as to why I thought this gun needed a faster twist rate than the 1-18" it comes with currently. I pleaded with Boris to contact Eun Jin and ask if they would make me a barrel with a 1-16" or 1-14" twist rate, and offered to pay whatever the costs may be. As an after thought I also asked Boris if it would be possible to obtain one of the butt stocks with the adjustable cheek rest.
Well lo and behold I got an email last week from Boris telling me he received the items from Korea and shipped them to me! I received the new barrel and stock late Monday evening. Tuesday I took the new barrel to a gun smith and paid him to give me an accurate determination of the twist rate, using the cerrokote method. He then determined that the new barrel has a twist rate of 1-16.25". I installed the new barrel Tuesday but it rained all that day and also yesterday, so today is the first time I got to take my baby to the range and begin testing. And all I could do is shout PRAISE GOD with tears of joy as I saw the results!
I should explain that one of my biggest frustrations has been that my gun has a huge amount of power that I could never use. For example, I could shoot the Benjamin 27.8 gr. pellets on the power setting six clicks above nothing and put them all in one ragged hole at 50 yards, but if I tried to increase the power the accuracy just went down hill. And if I shot them on setting number 21, which is the max power setting for my gun, they would just spiral wildly out of control and make key holes in the target willy nilly. (A stock Sumatra has 13 settings on the power wheel, but mine has 21.)
So I started out at the range with the Benji's at 25 yards on the normal setting for them six clicks over from nothing, and they were all going straight through the first hole...no big deal really cause this is normal for them. Then next I moved the target out to 50 yards and fired six shots...one ragged 1/2" hole...no big deal. But here is where it gets interesting. I shot the next mag of Benji's on 9 clicks over on the power wheel and the group still hung together...then another mag on 12 clicks over and the group still held together. (Normally by now they would be hitting all over the place)! So I loaded another mag and turned the power wheel up three more clicks to the setting 15 clicks over...expecting the group the start falling apart, but lo and behold the group still held together... I just could not believe my eyes! So I loaded another mag and turned the power wheel up three more clicks to a setting 18 clicks over and I was just dumbstruck as I watched all six shots group together into an inch!
So of course I loaded another mag of Benji's and turned her power wheel up all the way to the max power setting 21 clicks above nothing, dreading the buckshot group I was sure to come. And yet I had a feeling of exhilaration, like the time when I was young and was riding a horse down hill that wanted to run... I knew better than to let him do it, but recklessly dropped the reins anyway, yelled EeeeHaaa! and rode him down that hill at a full gallop like I had *(&^ hounds on my heels. Well anyway, I fired the first Benji on Max Power and couldn't believe it as I watched it hit the red dot on the shoot-n-see exactly at point of aim! My God my heart was racing as I shot the other five rounds in the magazine and watched as each one landed right into a perfect little clover leaf group that measured just a hair over 1"! ON MAX POWER SETTING! That last group would have measured 3/4" except I pulled the last shot slightly due to my hands shaking so much. Before today this would have been absolutely impossible to perform with the old barrel that was on my gun.
And if you think that's something you should have seen what one type of slugs did. The Hunter Supply 52 grain Round Nose slugs all went into a 1" group at 50 yards on max power too! Strangely though, the hollow points and the flat nosed bullets from Hunter Supply did not shoot well in this barrel. The Eun Jin 43 grain pellets did great up to setting 18, but the groups with those fell apart on max power though. I can't wait to try out my JSB Exact Kings and Predator Polymags, but I am really excited hoping the H&N Barracuda's shoot well on max power. So now I can actually shoot my Sumatra at full max power ACCURATELY! Thank You Lord, Thank You Boris Tolstykh, and Thank You Eun Jin for making this dream for me finally come true.
I have a lot more testing to do in the coming days and am going to pass the results on to Boris, so that he can hopefully convince Eun Jin to use the 1-16" twist barrels in their next production runs, instead of the 1-18". In the meanwhile you guys should call Boris and ask him to order one of these for yourselves if you really want to use all the power your gun has accurately. And by the way, the new stock with the adjustable cheek rest is just gorgeous. And it adjusts from side to side, as well as up and down. Good night!
Best regards, Chuckster
