How to remove oily sheen on my scope lens?
«

I was shooting pigeons in some rainy weather yesterday and kept a rag sprayed with a little WD-40 in my pocket to periodically wipe down the airgun. Eventually my scope lenses accumulated too many water drops so I used a dry corner from my clean, soft rag to gently pad the droplets off the glass. That ended up putting some WD-40 on the glass and my efforts to further wipe it off only spread it around more.
I usually handle my guns so gingerly that I rarely need to clean the scope lenses. When I do I either use a lens pen like this, or maybe one of those silky cloths they include with new scope purchases. I'm worried I'll first need to use a little glass cleaner on a clean glass to get the oily sheen off - any tips on that?

I would not use Window cleaner if your glass is big bucks. If you can, wait & order/buy the good stuff specifically for optics. Use lens cloth only, definitely not cotton or swabs. How do I know that?

So maybe get a small bottle of the stuff to clean eyeglasses with at the drug store? I think they sell little spray bottles. Or do I need a specific "optics" class of cleaner?

Wish I could help you out buddy. I got mine on the first push from Kuwait. The label I'm afraid to say, didn't complete the tour.
Your guess is as good as mine, maybe Google diy lenses cleaner.

Lots of photographers use a product called "ROR" Residual Oil Remover. But good lens cleaning patches and rubbing alcohol work pretty well on scopes and binoculars. Use your lens brush to clean off any dust and debris, then use the alcohol to remove the oils.

Buy a Bushnell with RainGuard.
I'd use alcohol.

Waterproof scope? If so, spray with soapy water, e.g. enough Dawn or similar to feel soapy between the fingers, and "scrub" with a paint brush or lens brush. If there is dirt present too, just touch it with the brush and rinse to get the dirt out of there, then soap up again for a brush scrub. Flush with clean water to rinse and blow or pat dry. Watch out that you don't handle the tissue too much while patting it dry--you'll put more finger oil back on the lens. Just use a corner to wick up the droplets. Really tough oil may take a few tries. Alcohol probably works will on the finger oils; I don't know about the petroleum ones.

91% Isopropyl alcohol available at drug store. Works for all glass lenses. Evaporates quickly. No residue.

Yikes! I'd be careful with the acetone--the lens and coatings can take it, but the sealants and any plastic on the scope won't appreciate it. Soapy water is pretty tame; other lens and glass cleaners are good too. Any work with a brush is to either dislodge dirt (especially the first attempt--lightly stroke and rinse, then start over for any grease and oil) or "agitate" the soap/solvent action on the oil. You won't need to mash the brush into things; you just using it because it can't catch a particle and drag through your coating like a careless finger or wipe might.
Some people like lens cleaning papers/wipes, but all I can say it's soap water, rinse and pat dry for me--no rubbing! I'd almost say think like Edna ("No capes!")--"No Wipes!" but I will confess that I will sometimes will do a wipe, but I'm super careful about my materials.
My eyeglass lenses look new for years following that routine, minus the brush. When doing eyeglasses, you have the benefit of being able to have very clean fingers first and can gently mop and wipe with your finger tips across the entire lens. I've got my daughter hooked on this advice and she has made the following observation: nothing cuts the make-up smears and facial oils on her reading glasses like the hand soap in most rest rooms. Upon testing, I find I agree with her. The stuff is awesome and rinses easily. Also, in rest rooms it is perfectly fine to pat dry with the paper towels there, just no rubbing.

Just in case you're out of the loop on the animated movies, here's Edna:

The soapy water works well for light oils a smears. I'd stay away from paper towels for drying though, they're often harsh and can potentially scratch the lenses if you're not careful. Better to stick with a lens cloth for drying.
I sometimes use a steamer and lightly steam the lens to clean them if they aren't too dirty instead of washing.

I've had good luck with Monitor screen cleaner from Office Depot & a microfiber cloth. No streaks at all.

I used the 95% alcohol you can find at a decent drug store, the more diluted kind will spot worse then the more pure alcohol. Used it a lot for cleaning laser lens on the electronics stuff when I was still working.

I use a DIY eyeglass cleaner for all my optics. Make up a big batch and store in large spray bottle but put some in a smaller bottle for travel and use in the field.
1/4 cup alcohol
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water
2 drops dish washing soap
Put the dishwashing soap in last, cap the bottle and shake to get everything mixed together.
I will never go back to store-bought eyeglass cleaner.

Zeiss lens cleaning wipes. $2.97 for 50 Individually wrapped wipes from Walmart. They are for cleaning high quality optics. I work for the local telephone company and get Icky-Pick ( the jelly that waterproofs underground cable) on my expensive eye glasses. This takes it off easy where a soft cloth only smears the oily gel around. I have used it on all my scopes and binos for years with no trouble. Easy to pack in a range bag, truck or hunting coat pocket.

I always just use a little alcohol on a thin cotton cloth.

Denatured alcohol.
Not to dispute your word but I don't think I would use denatured alcohol on a lens that could have a coating on it. I don't know for sure on glass but I use it to clean off old varnish in antique wood. Just my 4 cents due to inflation
