What's the + - movable cap at the rear of some scopes? I have 2 scopes with it. I figured it was to make slight adjustments to eye relief if you could not mount far enough back. When I focus and pull my head slightly back twist it out, it makes no difference. What's it for, and is this something that needs to be adjusted if you shoot at different ranges along with the ao?

It is to focus the reticle for your eyes. Point the scope at a white or bland wall or the sky and focus for best, sharpest reticle. Yes it's a very broad adjustment and it's hard to tell that it's doing anything.

So once it's adjusted it good to go? I won't have to mess with it if I'm shooting at different ranges and adjusting ao.

yup...good to go for your eyes. Crosshairs should be clear and solid once adjusted properly.

Make sure you lock it down after you set it if there is a lock nut on it.

There is a right way to set that adjustment, especially if you have AO.
Point it at a target at a known distance. Set the AO for that distance. Then adjust the ocular ring to where the reticle and target are both in focus and lock it down.
I read on here all the time about how the AO markings are off on various scopes, but the reality is that they were never properly set up to begin with (owner/user error). Follow the above procedure and it will fix that problem on all but the poorest quality scopes (where nothing will help).

On two of my scopes I have set it for use
without
my prescription glasses.
Sure makes it nice for me... but the Son-in-Laws can't see squat out of them.
