I am the proud owner of the “Toy Blow-Gun” patented by Talmon Clifford Bush of New Haven, Connecticut on January 12, 1869 (Patent No. 85,788). I have not been able to find any other examples of this gun. Perhaps my gun is a hand-made prototype or there were very few of these toy air guns manufactured. I am also interested in learning more about Mr. Bush, the inventor of the gun. I found two other patents he received. One dated October 26, 1869 for an “improved insulator for telegraph wires” that he shared partial rights to with Charles A. Bush of New London, Connecticut (No. 96,198). The other was an “improved button-hole cutter” dated Sep. 13, 1870 (No. 107,332). Mr. Bush’s patent for the “Toy Blow-Gun” was referenced in a 2001 patent for a technology used in the development of computer processors (No. US 6,206,626). According to several genealogical websites, there was a Talman Clifford Bush born on March 20, 1831 who worked as a mechanic in New Haven. He married Frances M. Prince of New London, Connecticut on Dec. 31, 1851 and they had six children (births range from 1852 to 1870). I believe this is the same person as the inventor of the “Toy Blow-Gun.” I have not been able to find the date of his death or any other information about Mr. Bush. I would appreciate hearing from the members of this list if they have any information they can provide about this air gun and its inventor. Thank you!

That is one of the coolest airgun toys I have seen. Love to hear the story of how you acquired it.

I inherited the gun from my dad. I’m still trying to piece together the story on how he acquired it. I think he may have purchased it at an auction in New Hampshire in the late 1990s. I wish I would have asked him about the gun when I had a chance. I’m not an expert on toy air guns, but based on my research, I think this gun is very unique, perhaps the only example of its kind in the world, and way ahead of its time. I hope some of the members of this forum can share their insights and expertise with me. Thanks!
