Advice on increasing Bluestreak performance (Non- Steroid)

Greetings members,
Once again I turn to the collective knowledge for direction. The gun was made in 1986 and I am the original owner. Recently chronied it with 14.3 cylindricals and best with 8 pumps was 530 FPS. So I bought the re-seal kit from MAC1 and installed only the pump cup for an average of 564 FPS. Installed entire kit and average was 575 FPS. I was hoping for a much greater increase in pellet velocity. If I pump it 10 times it will break 600 FPS. I tried 12 pumps and got 620 FPS. Those double digit pumps I tried only once. The MAC1 kit did not come with any springs as opposed to a Baker kit. I have yet to hear from MAC1 for advice since leaving voice mail in this regards. Sending it in for the steroid upgrade is just not a financial option
. Are these velocities normal? If any members could advise on what some real world numbers can be achieved that would be great. Thank you! Good luck and good shooting!

Hi Doug..
Is there any air left in the gun after the first shot?

Rob had a thread on Chrony results and I am pretty sure there would be a couple Streaks listed.
I will see if I can find a link.
*Edit*
Here it is! Many Streaks showing over 600...

There was never any air left in the gun even after the 10 & 12 pump velocities. It holds air easily for days but I have noticed that sometimes, not always, I must cock the rifle first or I get a loud hiss/pffflltt sound out of the muzzle. Previous to the re-seal, the rifle had never done this. I never had a chrony until I started reloading and then tested this rifle so I have no baseline to start with. I see some of the velocities posted and just couldn't help but think this old classic could do better. I am on the fence about buying a kit from Baker as the parts were-in my opinion-of much better quality than MAC1 parts. A brief phone call to Dennis at Baker a few weeks back and he said 650-ish would be about ballpark. That's what prompted me to move forward on the re-seal kits.

Throwing this out there only because I recently read it myself here on GTA. NO experiance with a Mac1 kit, I get mine from Rick at Precision Pellet.
If the Mac1 kit had a white poly check valve you need to first make sure it installed with the "X" pointing in the right direction, then use a wooden dowel and "seat" it with a hammer strike.
Hope that make sense.

Done and done.
The instructions included with MAC1 were more of a rambling about not so smart owners than actual step by step instructions. Anywho.....still not sure how I could bring it back up to speed.

Well, you have exhausted my limited knowledge other than going back in a rechecking everything.
One of the Guru's will be here to guide you. Avator is asleep right now I bet. (3rd shifter).
Glad I chimed in though so I can follow along.

I agree with Dennis, 650 average is about right. I have seen some that could not get any better than about 620, even after a re-seal, & the guy who repaired mine could not figure out why. If he could not get about 650, he would tear it down & start over.
There was a thread on here a few weeks ago , maybe by ROB, who had one with an incorrect rod in it, which reduced power. You can buy a threaded rod & new head.

I had hoped the rod was adjustable but it is of the fixed type.

When you took the valve apart there should have been 2 seals. One under the retainer nut and one under the valve guts. I am not sure if they still used lead in '86. The one under the retainer nut usually comes out with the valve guts. The one under the valve guts... not so much. MAC1's kit comes with neoprene replacement seals. In my opinion, as well as the opinion of others, to reuse the lead if possible. The other common mistake is made when putting the larger conical mainspring back in. The narrow end of the spring goes toward the hammer or shooter's end of the gun. However, in your case, I suspect head space as your culprit. Meaning the pump piston cup is not making contact with the valve nose at the end of each stroke. A good sign of this is the pump arm flopping open after the gun is shot and pressure in the valve exhausted. You should feel positive resistance when closing the pump arm at about 3/4" before completely closed. Another good sign of the is at about 6 - 8 pumps. The pump arm kinda springs open into your hand when opened for subsequent pumps. This condidtion requires adjusting the pump piston rod. Check your pivots, they may also be worn creating head space. Slow pumping is critical... pausing at the full open point of the stroke allows the gun to gulp a full volume of air to be compressed into the valve. Over oiling will also let air escape past the cup seal while pumping. A little goes a long way.
Hope some of this helps.... good luck

Indeed the MAC1 came with synthetic rings which were thrown out after I went in the second time to put lead seals in. The lead washers and springs were lined up properly then I put it all back together. I feel that this particular re-seal kit was a waste of pesos. The pump arm has always flopped open after shooting for as long as I can remember
. I had no idea that was an indication of something wrong with the platform. All the rivets are nice and tight with no slop. Just as you mention Avator, the pump arm does spring open around the 5-8 pump mark and positive pressure is felt at about the halfway point of closing the arm. I never paid much attention to arm flopping open due to the way I held the rifle when firing. So now do I drill out a penny and stack it under the pump cup? A nickle?

If the pump arm flops open after the shot, it means that the pump rod is too short. You're not getting all the air into the valve, with every pump. I have a 67 that has the same problem. One of these fine days, I'm going to order an adjustable rod from Mac1. That's the only proper fix. Until then, it won't do any harm to over pump the gun to get it up to spec. I put 10 in mine to get 640.

The pump cut fits into a lip all the way around the metal keeper. Anything with enough thickness to fix the problem will most likely not let the cup seal lock into place. Like Longhunter said, the only real fix is an adjustable rod.

Ok great!! 2 nickles it is! I can afford that!
Cheapest upgrade ever! I'm gonna patent this......
So if I move into this so called "adjustable thing" I reckon it will require some trial and error for optimal performance? I wonder if it can be adjusted without removing all the pins and so on...the pins were in there very tight. Thank you for all the help!

Use a 3/16" diameter drill bit shank, in place of the roll pin, while adjusting the piston. Leave the front plug out, until you're ready to reassemble.

Was just about to ask where I should get one. Justed checked my email and Baker got right back to me the very same day. He has them so that looks like the best bet. As always, still welcoming any advice or tips for proper and final installation. Really looking forward to getting this old girl back up to speed.

I'm on the same boat as you with the one 1979 Silver it's stuck just under 600fps. I can get to specs with more pumps, but who really wants to be pumping up to 10. I as well used Mac's kit, but I've used them as well for most the others and I'm usually around 615 +/- a few FPS. There is a blog by Gaylord he sent a Dan off for a refinish and it came back just below 600 as well. Can't recall the rest of the story I thought it was low, but he felt it was where it was suppose to be. Let me find it

Here it is:
https://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2016/09/sheridan-blue-streak-part-3/
He talks about the rifle requiring a break in. I do agree I've noticed after several shots the rifle will pick up FPS and find its average. It's just I've shot many times and it increased with each shot, but it capped off where it was. The biggest increase was with the piston swap out:
