Sparrow got bowled over
« on: March 27, 2017, 11:36:27 AM »
In this quick video, we can see an English Sparrow taking the food put down for the native birds on either side of him: Dark-eyed Juncos. Last year, I got about 10 or 12 of them. Usually, one every other week or so. The rest seem to get the idea to stay away from my yard, which is a sanctuary for native songbirds. The Juncos come back about 2 minutes later, and don't even seem to mind the sparrow carcass.

Too bad it's not a English/House Sparrow.  That's a Song Sparrow.

Female HOSP's have a tan line behind the eye, not a black line, and male sparrows look different with a large black spot on their chest, and a full "hood" on their head, not a partial one like this bird.  Also the beak of a HOSP is bigger/wider.

I made the same mistake about 10 years ago until I studied HOSP pictures on the web closer, and now I can pick out HOSP's very quickly.

Harry

PS.
Sorry meant to say Chipping Sparrow
