NCStar 4x30 Compact scope

I recently bought a new Crosman Model 760B air "musket" (not a rifle as it's a smooth bore). I found my old eyes wouldn't let me use the open sights, so I wanted an optic for this little carbine. I put my BSA RD40 red dot on it, and actually got good results. But, since I am going to set it up for night ratting, the BSA presents a few problems. 1.It takes a battery, which could go out at the worst time. 2. As usual, for my eyes (not blaming this on the BSA at all) the dot is not a nice round dot, but better than most dot sights I've tried. 3.It is unmagnified.
So, I wanted a 4 power, as that's what has worked well for me with my other air rifles. I didn't want a huge behemoth of a scope, as it would look and seem like overkill on a $32.00 airgun. So, I stumbled upon the NCStar 4x30 Compact scope. While it doesn't have an adjustable objective ring on the front lens, I could see that it had a threaded front ring. On my other scopes, I have been able to remove the front ring, and then screw the next ring in, either way, in order to get the target in sharp focus at whatever distance I want. The little scope cost me a whole $16.00, so off went my order.
Got the scope, and mounted it with a set of 1" rings I already had. First problem. I ran out of left adjustment when trying to zero it. I don't know if it's a problem with the scope, or the dovetail rails on the 760. The BSA, when sighting it in, never ran up against the stops fo windage or elevation.
I ended up taking the scope back off, and using 3 thicknesses of electrical tape half way around the scope, to move it in the direction I needed. That got me so I could zero it. On some scopes, I have problems getting the cross hairs in sharp focus. Not on this NCStar, I'm happy to report. These cross hairs are razor sharp, so I can't use tat as an excuse for bad shooting. Then, since the 760 IS a smooth bore, I wanted to keep the ratting distance pretty close, I zero'd the gun and scope to 7 yards, a distance I have sent some rats to meet their maker at. So, I pulled off that front scope ring, and started turning the next ring, till I got the target in good focus at 7 yards. Had to move the objective lens a long way forward, and was worried about running out of threads, but it worked fine. Everything else about the scope, was uneventful, just like I like it.
In summary, very clear optics on both the cross hairs AND the target. Adjusters work like thay should, and the direction arrows are very easy to see without having to bring my reading glasses to the shooting bench. I have a few scopes where these are so faint, that they are very hard to see.
One drawback in using a compact scope like this is, I can't use my favorite mount for a small led red or green flashlight, as the mount I like needs room on the 1" body of the scope, about the thickness of one scope ring. I'll instead, use my rechargeable light with different color'd lenses, which I mount on my home made shooting stick.
This scope is WAY better than the ubiquitous 4x15 cheapo scopes that seem to come on many lower line air rifles.
For $16.00 delivered from Amazon, this is a no-brainer.
Here's the scope, and you can click here to see what the crosshairs are:
http://ncstar.com/product/product-detail.aspx?GroupNo=0&ModelNo=SC430B
Some owners seem to think the cross hairs are too thick, but I don't agree. Maybe, if I was shooting at 50 or 100 yards. But, I won't be shooting ant farther than maybe 15 yards.
It's got a good warranty too (see below).
Here's the warranty:
http://ncstar.com/support/america-best-warranty.html
I'm a happy camper! I have a smooth bore airgun and scope combo, that can put 5 shot groups easily under 1/2" at 7 yards, and I get a number of 3/16"-1/4" too.

I'm glad you ended up getting the compact. I like mine a lot and is perfect on the 392. Now, to get the eye relief right I had to slide it back a lot. So much so that I could only use 1 mount. Now it's been on there for some time now and hasnt budged. I don't think you will have any problem just going with 1 mount so you can use the other area of scope body for the light.

That's a good idea! Guess I better order one more of the mounts. Here's the mount I like:

That mounts pretty nice. May have to order me one as well for my 1322 carbine. Yea that compact is super light. I dont have any problem only using 1 mount.

I tried removing one ring and mounting the other mount for a flashlight. But, that negated my shimming of the scope, so threw it off again. Again, ran out of left scope adjustment. Tried to shim using one scope ring, and it didn't work out. Ended up going back to me BSA RD30 red dot. That sight mounts on the 760 and doesn't run out of adjustment.
I have a new in box Daisy 880S I recently bought, still unfired. Think I'll try the NCStar scope on that airgun. Not sure if the problem is with the 760 dovetail, or the NCStar scope, or a combination. Or, I could go back to two scope rings on the 760 with shims.

Still didn't figure out why u don't have enough adjustment? I guess it could be a combo of both. Neither are an expensive item. Though the NcStar scope, yet cheap, still seems to be good quality. Maybe I've been lucky or not enough experience. Any NcStar scope I've got always has looked, felt, and performed better than all other scopes with the same price tag. You could try the scope on a different rifle or try a different scope on the 760.

I decided to remove the scope I had on my 1377 carbine, and put the NCStar on that airgun, using just one scope ring, and with my flashlight mount already mounted to the scope. The scope I had on the 1377 was kind of large, and the NCStar Compact fits it much better.
I did this because I am very impressed with the optics on the NCStar, AND, I can have a sharply focused set of crosshairs AND, sharply focused target too with ease. The 1377 has proven itself as an accurate and fun to shoot fast handling little carbine (with the stock barrel mind you, and a steel breech), and has killed some rats at night. I'll just have to decide on my distance, either 7 or 11 yards. Wish I could mount my TKO muzzle brake on the 1377, but you have to go to a longer barrel for that, and I like the 10.5" stock barrel.
So, later today, I will find out if the windage adjustment running out of clicks will be a problem mounted to the gun. Got my fingers crossed, as I really like this little scope.

Yea, I ditched the 10.5 put that on a Crosman2240. That way I could put a LDC on both the 1322 and 2240. Not that you couldn't put a LDC on the 2240 as is, but to get an additional 30fps was a no brainer.

I found the problem with the NCStar scope was, when I tried it for some night ratting with a red led flashlight. The image through it was much more degraded than, say, through any of my 4x32mm Winchester or Centerpoint scopes. I need all the light gathering and image clarity I can get for that duty.

Still working with the NCStar comoac scope on the 1377 carbine. Today I decided to try shimming again. This time i went with a piece of aluminum from a soda can. Since I'm only using one ring, I wasn't too sure how it would work. The scope/mount/airgun combination would not let me adjust for zeroing in the Crosman Hunter pellets. I ran out of lert windage adjustment with the pellets hitting about an inch to the right of the point of aim. Well, the aluminum really did the trick. Now I have plenty of clicks remaining for left or right adjustment. I did have to rezero for elevation, as the shim affected that. Works sell now.
