I had an itch to settle and when I got home tonight from work I set up a target and prepared to humble myself with my RWS 45.
I set up the target 10 meters away. I needed to gain some confidence so I did not want to push it.
Here is how it went:
1. First shots were all over the place.
2. I remembered to use the artillery hold.
3. Started to improve
4. I settled down and felt better.
5. In failing light I shot 5 shots in the center target and felt pretty good about the finish.'
Lessons learned:
1. Slow down and relax.
2. Control my breathing
3. The handle I have to help cock the rifle moves too much. Need to figure out what to do.
4. Bottom line - I had fun!

Tom - thanks for the kind words. I was glad to get out and just shoot. I need to get a chronograph because I have no idea how this rifle is performing. It was made in 09 84 and I have not replaced anything in the last couple of years.

Here is a pic of my rifle. The handle at the end of the barrel moves and slide down a few times. Any suggestions on what to do with this?

Thanks Stephan. I was only out for about 30 minutes or so trying to shoot by the setting sun. It felt good. It is very humbling to shoot a springer. I have shot my share of centerfire in the military and my own rifles. This is a completely different technique to perfect.

His Muzzle Brake is sliding around...any set screws in this one ?

There are on mine. I don't have it at the moment, but it is held on with grub screws.
The other thing, that 45 probably has a leather seal. A few drops of silicone chamber oil down the transfer port and let it sit muzzle up for a day will probably tighten up the seal and the groups a bit.

Good shooting with a nice rifle, Randy. Look for a set screw or two holding that muzzle device in place. A little LocTite is your friend.

I will check the muzzle break later tonight. I guess I should put my reading glasses on when I look because when I looked at it yesterday I did not see any screws. ;)

What is literally shown there, of course, is the breech or loading port, along with the breech seal. Off the image, to the lower right, would be the transfer port. It is what mates up with the breech/loading port to "transfer" air from the compression tube to the pellet in the barrel.
Silicone oil is important because it won't diesel or detonate. Put six drops in there, leave it muzzle up and it will "reconsitute" your seal. I see yours is an 84, so it almost without doubt has a leather seal.

I suspect a decent part of your big group size to start was "limbering up" the seal. I learned about the chamber oil from Tom Gaylord on the Pyramyd Air Blog and did it to mine, also an 84, and I think it helped a good bit. Took some of the "wheeze" if you will out of the shot cycle. It shoots about as well as my 6 month old HW97, with only a small graunch when cocking.
Leather seals apparently are not as good as polymer for sealing and generating pressure under near ideal conditions, but they are very forgiving and most folks seem to think they will last about forever with a bit of lube.

My muzzle brake has Dianawerk Rastatt on the top of the round part closest to the muzzle. There was absolutely no screws or allen bolts in it. I took a piece of wood and slowly tapped it along. Now it is flush with the muzzle and tight. Thanks
