Title: Couldn't resist just bought a Crosman 101
Post by: 45flint on March 20, 2017, 11:03:20 PM
Hope it lives up to the pictures and I'm sure it will probably need new seals.  But it was a 1949, Sears crinkle paint with a diablo cocking knob.  Elm stock.  Town and County sights.  Should be fun.  I think the diablo cocking knob won me over.

Resistance is futile...
That's why I don't visit those sites.

The problem is, I have a good buddy in Florida named Steve that sends me an e-mail pointing out every one of them.

Looks familiar lol, that was the exact model I have been looking for.  It's supposed to be the best 101 they made?  My only other Crosman desire is the Town and Country.  Well at least I got the sight!

Steve, I was watching that one too.  Looks to be in very good shape, even the blued steel parts look good.  My 101 is the same variant, has an elm buttstock and walnut forearm.  Not a powerhouse but very accurate.

Saw this DT Flecther post on this variant:

"Some, but not all, 1949 model 101's also came with the diablo cocking knob.

The 1949 model 101, in my opinion, is one of the most valuable of all 101's. Not sure what a typical 101 goes for these days, but, I would suggest at least a 25% premium compared to a typical 1946-1948 model 101. Add a diablo cocking knob and that might go up to a 50% premium."

DT

May have paid a little more than it's worth but these guns are so cheap compared to their "value".  This probably makes up for my 102 which I got crazy cheap for what it was.   It will be nice to have both the 101 and 102 in the collection.

Nice gun Steve,
I want to get just one Crosman 101 or 102 in good condition.  I restored two of them that I trashed picked when I was 13 or 14 YO.
I can't remember what happened to them except their gone.
At the time that I repaired/refinished them, I was surprised how comparable they were to my Benjamin 342 and Sheridan's.
The 101's/102's didn't have the same power, but they were surprising accurate and introduced me to the idea of a Peep Sight.

Now, 42 years later, they're collectors items.  I need to get just one good one; I don't care if it doesn't shoot ..... I think I can repair.

Good Luck with yours ............... Kirk

The 101, 102 can just be endearing because of their compact thin design.  Reminds you of a Winchester because of the flat sides.  Also the pump handle is more graceful and less noticeable than the more modern pumpers.   The power I think is fine, I'm about 12 fp on my 102 which is more than enough and peeps sights kill the open sights on the more recent guns.  Peep sights also keep old eyes in the game. I wonder how many of the guys that grew up with Sheridans, and Benjamins have even held a 101 in their hands?

'48 - '49 was when a lot of companies were scrambling to find work to fill the void that was left when government contracts ended due to the war ending. Consider the Rochester... This was design by a stolen Crosman engineer for Monroe Gasket company. They only lasted one year and was taken over by Kessler who only produced the gun for 3 more years. Companies like Crosman were putting products together with what they had to get them on the shelves. When they transitioned from variant to variant they used up interchangeable parts from prior variants before getting into new stock. Some very interesting reading out there about this era in the air gun history.

as long as you have started a collection you might want to add a 100  ;D
then a 122   ;D

It will be nice to have both the 101 and 102 in the collection.

Hey Guys,
I know the 101's/102's were meant for peep sights, but are there any good scope mount options available?
My 57 YO eyes just don't work the same as they did in my early teens :P.

Kirk;
Ever used a peep? My 60 yr old eyes are definitely not what they used to be. I really struggle with iron/open sights. The peep works very well for me if I open the peep hole and make the front blade a bit larger. I think the same mounts for the Sheridans would work for the 101.

Peep sights will work with old eyes, I even have a fixed lens from cataract surgery.  That said I did use a pistol scope I had on hand and mounted it scout style on my 102.

The Sheridan mounts are two small.  Crosman makes an intermount that will work but though solid you can't just throw your rifle around.

I got my mounts off eBay:

Yup,
As I mentioned above, I started using peep sights on all my pumpers as a kid after using the Crosman 101 ;).
At the time scopes almost seemed like cheating, plus they were unneeded weight.  I still have the peep for my Benjamin 342, but really struggle - unless the Sun is in front of me.
I shot my HW35E in Arizona last year at 50 Yards with my Williams peep and that was OK.

I think the 101's barrel is larger diameter than on my Benjamin 342, but I could be wrong?

Yes the Benjamin and Sheridan mounts are wrong for the 101:

I added the leather under them for added stability.
