Chorny Testing with NPXL 1500 out of the box - Whats the ideal FPS for accuracy?

Question - I know that we want to keep the pellet from tumbling and under the sound barrier.
What is the best FPS for accuracy and still delivery a good FPE ?
Any real difference in accuracy between 987 FPS and 930 (I know FPE changes). ?
Just got the Chrony and I am waiting on my trigger, seals, and lube etc.. to tune this up.
Straight out of the box, but at least 500 rounds through it already.. here is what I am getting
Crossman Wadcutters:
1101 Average
JSB Diablo Exact / 8.4 gr
987 Average
JSB Diablo Exact / 7.3 gr
1075 Average
Crossman Ultra Mag Heavy / 10.5gr
930 Average
H&N Barracuda / 10.5gr
945 Average
H&N Barracuda / 8.6gr
1032 Average

The 930 ones should be more accurate, but test it with that gun. As I understand it the speed of sound is around 1100fps at sea level and the buffet zone is about 20% either way. The buffet zone moves your pellet around randomly so most real target guns shoot around 600fps well under at any elevation. With this math you can shoot up to about 880 with no issue. But the buffeting starts at 880 and increases up to 1100 so lower 900s may be just dandy for your shooting. The speed of sound lowers as you get higher so what shoots great at sea level may be inaccurate at 2000 ft. So it depends.
I do know that for hunting the more fps the better the expansion and shock so it's a balancing act. In general I'd stick with the heavier pellets, but what pellets the gun likes may be much more of a factor. I used to do blind tests where I'd sort pellets in to bags with numbers on them and didn't know what I was shooting till afterwards.

Elevation ! I did not think about that.. Just moved from sea level to 2,302 elevation... a few months ago.
Sea Level -1,120 fps
2,300 or so - 1,089 or so
minus the 20%.. puts me around 872 FPS.
Thank you.. that helps alot.

I have the 22 cal NP XL and it makes about 25 FPE. Your numbers suggest 20 FPE. Now that's a lot for 177 but not what this gun is capable of. Anyways, even at 20 FPE shoot heavy pellets, at least 10.5 gr, to keep it well under 1000 fps.

I have read that the pellet delivering the most fpe will also be the one most accurate in your gun.
Since fpe changes with each pellet there may actually be two or three which fit into this window.
In the end, the gun itself makes the final determination of which pellet shoots best in it. The favorite pellet can change over time, either because some parameter in the gun changes or the manufacturer does something different with his pellet line.

Finding the best pellet seems to be a moving target, pun completely intended.
So after the mods and tune up.
The Crossman Ultra Mags 10.5g were shooting at 930 are now shooting at 970.
and a few are cracking the barrier up here.
I am now looking to order some pellets in the 12-16gr range and see how it works.. or maybe I slap on a .22cal barrel and switch to .22 pellets, since I need something heavier.

Mine loves the crosman 10.5 out of the brown box. I know if you do your part it will group well. I upgraded my scope to a UTG 3-12x44 Swat and it's a perfect combo.
