Title: List of states that allow air rifle hunting?
Post by: AirGunBug on April 05, 2013, 06:11:58 PM
Hello forum,

I have been all over the web looking for a resourceful link which lists states that allow for air rifle hunting and I am coming out short.  Sure there are plenty of links directly to state departments, however you go around in circles for hours, open unbelievable amounts of PDF's and still you get no where.  I am interested in both small & large game in a nutshell I suppose.  I do know places I CAN use air rifles, but I would like my options more open.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Yes, there is a listing.   Do a GTA search.  Illinois is legal for small game, and you can see the retrictions.   Iowa and Missouri are also freindly...I  did 'em last year.  I doubt it's changed, but heck...who knows today obama?

Legal in Maryland except where restricted by local ordinance. Also, some state or federally owned lands may have rifle restrictions which apply to air rifles here also. No deer or bear but I'm hoping that will change for deer. Migratory birds are prohibited.

Missouri allows pretty much all small game and deer ( pcp by external power source 40 caliber or larger for deer). Migratory birds and turkey are a no no here for airguns.

In TN, it is illegal to hunt deer, bear, elk, turkey or migratory birds with airguns.  Everything else is legal to hunt with airguns in TN.

In NY any small game animal/fur bearer that can legally be hunted with a rimfire rifle can be legally hunted with an air gun that is at least .177 cal and shoots at least 600 fps...    (rabbit, squirrel, fox, possum, skunk, raccoon, etc).

Small game only in Louisiana.  You must use a rifle too.  Per a series of conversations LDWF led me to beleive they are considering larger game with big-bore's.

The only animals you can hunt in Texas, with airguns, are non-game (unprotected) animals.

Technically not legal right now in FL, however the FWC website states that a new law is expected to be in place by the 2013 season allowing airguns on grey squirrel. Rules state that the non-game can be killed humanely as needed if it's a problem animal, with no text at all about what type of implement can be used. Several wildlife animals are listed specifically as open season at all times, including at night, even with a light, with no permit of any kind needed and with no gun constraints listed.
