Trail NP barrel cleaning

I've got a question for you all regarding barrel cleaning and accuracy with my Trail NP. I shot ~300 pellets through my barrel right when I got my gun. I DID NOT clean the barrel before shooting those pellets. I found an article by Tom Gaylord on removing the shroud from the barrel and cleaning it that way, so that's what I did.
Well, after cleaning the barrel and shooting both JSB jumbos and CPHP's through it I can't get good groups. I've probably shot ~200 pellets through it since I cleaned the barrel and I'm getting fliers every other pellet. I havn't been able to do better than 1/2" groups at 20yards with a flier 2 inches off the mark every other pellet with both JSB and CPHP. Before cleaning the barrel I was getting clover leafs with CPHP's at 25yards consistently with no fliers.
Is this typical after you clean a barrel? As it gets leaded back up will my accuracy improve?
Also, just so you know I've tightened all my stock screws and scope mounts. Everything is very tight.

How did you clean? How did you remove/reinstall the shroud? How is lockup? Are pellets hitting sleeve cover (Item 7 on EVP)?

I cleaned the barrel with goo gone and used weed eater line. I used a hex key to remove the full shroud from the barrel. It just fits over it and threads on. The shroud is seated and tight back in place.
What is lockup?
How do I know if the pellets are hitting the sleeve cover?

if pellet is hitting the shroud you will see lead chunks in the end of the shroud and lock up is does the barrel close tightly or does it move slightly. good indication of this is an your groups will be in line up and down for the most part and usually left to right if the pivot bolt is loose or the shims are worn.....dave

Oh, and set up your gun on the bench so crosshairs are right on target WITHOUT you touching the gun, look thru scope, move your head up down left & right making sure crosshairs stay on target...if they don't, your parallax adjustment is not as good as it could be.

you are shaving the skirts hand loading but how about with the pellet pen? you could take a dremmal tool and a pointed grinding stone and take a small amount on material off the end of the pellet chamber so the skirt goes in a little more but just a little not to much just enough so the pellet seats better........dave

Dave, thanks for you response, the pellets do not seem to be hitting the shroud of the gun. I don't see any lead chunks on the shroud at all. Also, the barrel has no play in it and seems to lockup tightly.
I'm wondering how far the crown of the barrel is from the shroud of the gun? Does the shroud extend off of the crown or do the crown and shroud meet....the shroud sits over the crown?
The reason I ask is I'm wondering if I damaged the crown by using the hex key when I took the shroud off? If the crown is right at the end of the barrel, then maybe when I inserted the hex key into the shroud I damaged the crown a little which could be causing my fliers?
I'm not sure what else it could be

The 1/4" Allen wrench used to remove the shroud goes a good inch into the shroud before it hits the muzzle of the barrel and is too wide to penetrate the muzzle so no worries there. As for fliers, didn't you have them before you began tinkering?

as john said no wories but you should still check the crown use a q-tip and gently put it in the crown end of the barrel and pull it out and see if fibers from the q-tip remain in the barrel as well as a visual inpection to make shure crown is even all the way around the barrel. and if your cutting the sckirts of your pellets off when closing the breech that WILL efect your accuracy. from what i can tell if your groups are in the 3/4 inch range at 20 yards with these things that not all that bad for an untuned air rifle......dave ........post some pics of your groups with a ruler next to it so we can see what your talking about do the same for the crown which you may have to remove the shroud for and a pic of the pellet after you close the breech with the pellet in it and open it and take a pic .

Ok thanks guys. I think I've got it figured out. The q-tip trick was a big help. I removed the shroud again and carefully inspected the crown. It's not in good shape. When I inserted the q-tip, there were very small strands of cotton left on the tip of the barrel. That tells me this gun will be my very first attempt at re-crowning a barrel.
I hope to have significant accuracy improvements.
I don't think I'm pinching the skirts of the pellets, so I'm guessing this is my major issue. Prior to the barrel cleaning I was having inconsistencies, but it seemed to be worse post barrel clean. I typically get 2 or 3 pellets hit within 1/2 inch of each other then I get a wild random flier hit 3 inches away from my "group".
Thanks for all the help guys! Love this forum
