Title: Daisy powerline 856
Post by: MountainMan126 on August 12, 2011, 09:13:33 PM
I bought this rifle probably 10 years ago to get rid of some pidgeons . They were making a huge mess all over the porch at the last place we lived. If I remember I thought I paid about 30- 35 bucks at walmart. I want to say I have seen this same rifle for sale for more than that recently. Either way I dug it out and have been tinkering with it.

Raised the comb height with some pipe insulation and camo tape, extended the LOP with an add on recoil pad/2 screws/camo tape. I took the stock off drilled a hole added foam insulation for less twang from the hammer spring etc. I changed a spring in the trigger and while I have no method to measure the pull weight it feels much lighter, maybe half of the stock pull. cut the sights of the barrel and more camo tape , I tried to make my own muzzle brake , no luck so far. The one I did make changes the POI but looked cool as long as you don't like to hit what you shoot at. Last I have added a red dot sight, started with a really cheap one someone gave me  , I now see why it was  "free". Finally after fighting with that I gave in and used a sight of better quality , still not all good though, the quality of the plastic sight rail on the receiver leaves something to be desired so I have been moving the sight front to back trying to find the sweet spot for it. I settled on what seemed to be the best position and have still had to shim the front under the weaver mount so I can get enough adjustment to punch a clean hole in the center of the bull. Now all that is left is some fine tuning which we don't have enough daylight for till tomorrow . This one has really been making me work for it today , but I have almost won and to be fair it is a cheap gun I din't expect it to fall in to place right off the bat. I have also really tried to make this as cheap as possible, using whatever is laying around from other projects etc. rather than just buying stuff I know will work, lol. Anyway here is a pic.

I have one of those 856's too. It was my first airgun about 10 years ago. I haven't treated mine as well as you've treated yours....

I guess you removed the muzzle brake?

The question is, how well does it shoot when you're done.

This is one of my favorite parts of this hobby , is getting to see what everyone else comes up with, when given the same gun to start . Has there ever been a cheap gun build off , keep it under say 65 bucks including the gun. so you are either building super cheap/remanufactured/or used as your base and then trying to make as much as you can from there .

Yeah muzzlebrake is gone pending redesign and camo tape doesn't work well on the pumphandle either.

Nice shooting. Some people just don't give these cheap guns a fair shake. These Daisies are something else.

Thanks AirgunAndy, I agree 100% . I cleaned the barrel right before heading out,.First time in a long time, I ran a few types of pellets through it , cphp, destroyers , s-domes. Domes look the best on paper the cphp was next with a little looser pattern at the same distance. Maybe someday soon I will put a string over the chrono, and get some numbers together .

Cool post. I've got one of the same guns. I got it about 2 months ago for $5.00 on craigslist. Had to do some work on the barrel and painted it flat black. Also added the Daisy elctronic point sight. So far its been a fun little gun. Especially considering i'm only $15.00 into it.

That daisy sight is the one I just pulled off and got rid of. My boss had it and said " I was gonna throw this away , but maybe it would work on one of those AGs you got" There is no click or way to lock your adjustment in place, the glare on the lens is horrible outside too. Hope you have better luck.
I like flat black got any pics?

For 5 bucks you can't go wrong. If you pull the left side cover off the action there is a small coil spring right near the trigger. If you swap it for something lighter it makes a world of difference in trigger pull and feel. Leave the safety on or be prepared to chase the tiny spring and and ball around

Here's a couple more shots of mine. May try the trigger spring if I can find some more springs to try.

Barrel housing cut off just in front of the pump hinge. The barrel itself is about 5" inside the housing! I had to use Goop to hold it in. It's strictly a BB gun now. A pellet fits tight enough that the barrel shoots out of the gun! I can shoot three BB's at a time though, so it's kind of like a sawed off shot gun.
Butt stock was cut down and capped with a piece of PVC plastic that was just glued to the plastic stock. Nothing fancy.

The spring I used was from a spring variety pack they sell at the local hardware store.

Andy , the fact that it is a shotgun does nothing bad for it in my book , what kind of spread do you get ?

oh my god that is so cool.  I was going to do that to my metal receivered daisy 880 and put real wood on it, but I found a deal on an 1894, so I'll chop that one down instead.  That one is really cool though.

Wow , if it is anything like mine your gonna have it a while. I have added a little more to mine since this post . Here is an updated pic with the flashlight mount.

This set up is perfect for barns and other dimly lit places. I shot a starling with it earlier.  Perfect head shot , now I am using him to draw the neighborhood cats away from my feeders. It has really good fit and is steady for most off-hand shooting,  close range 10-15 yards average. Mine likes the Daisy pmhp, 7.40gn. Took a squirrel with it last Saturday, one shot top of the head, this gun has earned it's spot in my collection.

All my readings were taken at 10 pumps. I use a drop of the Extreme rage synthetic oil they sell at Dicks for paintball guns, about once a week. Right on the oring on the pump arm piston. I have not done any work inside yet, no valve mods etc. So far I am only going that route if I have to rebuild it anyway.  I would give the daisy ammo a try, got 2 guns that shoot it better than anything else, hp in particular.
