Turkish walnut stripping questions

I'm getting ready to refinish my Hatsan 95 and have a few questions with regard to using strippers.
I have half a can of liquid stripper (Nasco brand) that must be 25 years old. It's the high powered kind, methylene chloride, toluene, etc. Still smells normal, not congealed or anything so I'd like to use it if I can. I know a gel or spray might be easier to work with, but I could probably lay paper towels on the stock and then apply the liquid over it to hold it in place on the wood?
The can says you should use their brand (of course!) stripper wash afterwards to remove any residue. It doesn't say anything about "or odorless mineral spirits", but other brands of stripper with the same ingredients say you can use either one after wiping the stripper off. I don't have any stripper wash so I'd like to use the mineral spirits if I can.
I plan on finishing with Tru-Oil. I'm hoping there will be enough color in the stripped wood so I don't have to stain. If I use mineral spirits to clean up after the stripping will the mineral spirits leave any residue of it's own that would interfere either with a water based stain (I'll go with Birchwood Casey's walnut stain if I have to use stain) or with the Tru-Oil? If so, could I get rid of the mineral spirits residue with a Dawn dish detergent and water scrub?
Thanks!

and the answer is?
??
I would think that you should use both the clean the wood after stripping and before sanding. Water will raise the grain and the solvent will not.
Please keep us informed on your progress. I hope to learn from you and do the same thing later.
Thanks,

Well, rather than use an ancient half-can of a liquid stripper that internet searches didn't find me any info about, I decided to follow in the footsteps of fellow GTA member and Hatsan 95 owner scp52 (Steve), which he posted here:
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=109156.0
I bought the same aerosol stripper and Minwax gunstock stain, and I already had TruOil on hand from a recent refinishing job on a Blue Streak.
I PM'd Steve today to ask how he cleaned his stock up after using the stripper. He said he filled a sink with hot water and Dawn dish detergent and scrubbed it up good and then towel dried and left it dry thoroughly before sanding.
I did the same but added one step: Although the aerosol can didn't say to do this, on their website it says after stripping and scraping you can dip a steel wool pad in mineral spirits and scrub the wood to clean up anything you may have left behind from your stripping/scraping.
When I got done doing that I wiped the stock down with paper towels and then did the hot water and detergent wash, and towel dry.
Even with that (and at the time it looked like I got
everything
stripped), after the stock dried I could still see some spots where I left some of the factory finish behind.
I used a cabinet scraper on those spots (for the most part they were small, and on flat surfaces) and am now in the process of sanding.
Before sanding I masked off the checkered areas. That was a little tedious but well worth it, I think. I know me, and without the masking I'd get moving along with the sanding and pretty soon I'd see that I'd be on top of the checkering.
So far, so good.

Sounds like you're well on your way and yep, masking the checkering can be a pain but well worth it to protect from damage or sanding. I didn't actually fill the sink with water, just a sponge and Dawn to wash the stock and the sink sprayer, to rinse it off. In my case, I left the stock to dry overnight, then did my taping the next day and started sanding.
Been hearing about the new 95 stocks having a lot more grain in them so looking forward to seeing yours when it's done so keep us posted and glad I could be of some help

There is also a product called "sanding sealer" I've used when refinishing varnished marine items. It is sort of like shellac and raises the grain prior to sanding, giving a smoother surface:

I've only used it for varnished finishes, not sure how it reacts to Danish or Tru oil.

They have started blasting wood with walnut hulls. Kinda like sand blasting.
The other is..........baking soda? My father is in to wood working and he was doing a repair on a table when he discovered this.
He told me a few months back and I kinda forgot till now. I think 2nd thing he said you could blast with was baking soda but I forget.
Takes off any finish without scratching.
Just kinda cool you could take the finish off walnut with walnut. Lol

Blasting old wood, like chairs, tables, dressers, and many other things is becoming the new thing.
Makes it look like brand new unfinished wood.
