Two Trail NP XL 1100's returned to Crosman, 3rd replacement on the way.

Well, I haven't had very good luck for the last few months and I am looking for some expert advice. I have had to return two Benjamin Trail NP XL 1100's to Crosman under warranty. The first one was a beautiful rifle, nice finish and all, but the scope rail with scope fell off at about shot 800. Yup, broke away from the weld and I caught it before it hit my shooting bench. I got a lot of learning from that rifle. Barrel cleaning, screw tightening, Loctite, artillery hold ,2 ruined scopes(C/P 3-9's), crown checking, breech checking and on and on. I got it to shoot pretty good SOMETIMES. So I am glad the scope rail fell off because after all the reading and work I did to try and get it to shoot consistently I was worn out and out of ideas. I really think there was internal problems. Lot of owners say the pistons seals are pretty torn up. The weirdest thing was I could shoot clover leafs for a while before I retired for the day and the next morning pick it up and shoot(same weather, temp, same everything) and it would be 1,2,3 or 4 inches left/right, up/down. Drove me nuts. Crosman sent me a replacement and it was not as nice as the first one. Turns out this one would never hold a group either after doing all the tricks that are written about for this gun. I did find that it preferred JSB Exact 18.13 gr. and then Crosman Premiers 14.3gr.. But no matter what hold I used or different pellets I used (about 1500shots) it would never group well, I'm talking about trying to keep it all on a 9" paper plate at 25 yards. So I called Crosman about the problem I was having and they said send her back.
So now that I have a 3rd one the way to me soon I want to know what you experts would do. Should I just go ahead and clean the barrel up and break her in as recommended and hope for the best or should I just go ahead and void the warranty by tearing into that sucker with a complete tune before I even shoot it. Getting tired of returning rifles to Crosman even though they have been excellent to deal with. I really like the XL 1100 and even though I've had some bad luck, I don't want to give up on it now. I am in for about $500 now between gun, scopes and pellets. In for a penny in for a pound! Would be nice to get 1/2" groups at 50 yards like some claim but I just don't think that is realistic with this gun. I'd settle for an 1" at 30 yards and I'd be happy. What would you do?
Thanks,,,,Rand

I can't advise you on what to do since I'm new to these current airguns. I too have a Benjamin, Trail NP 1100. MY rifle does as yours did. At the end of a shooting session I may get a good group. Next day the group may be 4-5" away from the previous days group. Sometimes I'll get excellent groups, sometimes they open up to unacceptable sizes. Very frustrating.

Since you asked - the first thing I'd do would be clean the rifle. The second thing I'd do (and have done) is replace the stock trigger with one from charliedatuna.com. I tend to replace the plastic pivot washers at the same time. THEN I would begin feeding it pellets. Just try feeding it a tin of Crosman Hollow Points to break it in. They're reasonably okay in most guns and they're cheap. You should have some kind of groups at twenty or thirty yards. Just work it for awhile. Depending on how it's progressing you can then start to seek the perfect pellet.
If you do, at any point, elect to return this one for warranty simply put the plastic washers and the original trigger back into the gun.
This is experience talking. That's kind of what I did with my third Nitro Venom (warranty). It did start stringing vertically before the initial warranty period from gun one was up but I got tired of the game. I ordered a Maccari piston seal, replaced it, and stringing was a thing of the past. In the process of replacing the seal I smoothed rough edges inside and put plastic across the cocking slot when I put the piston and new seal back in so I wouldn't damage the new seal. The really good news - the NP XL is not supposed to require a spring compressor for disassembly.

Thank you both so much for your replies. I feel better already. I wouldn't wish these problems on anyone but I am relieved to hear that someone else has had the same problems with this gun and not just me. Three warranties is a bit much. Anyway, I am glad you mentioned replacing the washers and piston seal because if I decide to do all those things where do I get the piston seal and washers? I've read that Crosman seals aren't as good as some aftermarket. Where do I get a seal other than Crosman? Who is this Maccari that I see all over. Is it Air Rifle Headquarters? I've gone to this site and don't see any seals for a Benjamin Trail XL 1100 and the website doesn't seem to friendly, a lot of RED words and warnings! I suppose they probably get hammered with a lot of stupid questions from people like me. Thanks again for the help.

If you really like shooting springers, do yourself a favor and get a good one. The 500.00 you say that has been put into this experiment would go a long way toward a quality rifle and decent scope. Please don't throw any more money at this. Look into a HW or Diana and be set for years of great shooting, tk

If you can do the tune yourself than do it, if not send it to someone who can.

That's pretty good Woodbutcher. I laughed when I read that. You're probably right! But the fifth one ain't gonna happen, no way, no how. I can do a tune and tinker if I have to and whatever extra dollars I have to put into the thing is going to be bare minimum, no fancy trigger either. The factory one will have to do. I wish now that I had gone up a notch or two to a better quality gun like tomykay12 said. But it is to late now, I don't have another $500 for another air rifle. It isn't right that some of these companies put out poor quality Chinese products and the consumer gets the short end of the stick. I'm sorry, I'll probably get kicked off the site, but it's true, we all been through it. I'm not a happy camper. I have to thank GTA and all the info I've read and help I've got from you folks keeping me from doing the Flying Air Rifle jig with a Benjamin Trail NP XL 1100. Have good day all,,,,Rand

I also have a no xl 1100. I got it about six months after they were introduced. I'm lucky that I haven't experienced any mechanical failure as yet. My most accurate pellets are H&N FTT 14.66 and H&N 18.21gr HP. They both group 1/2-3/4" at 35 yds if I do my part correctly. I have a leapers 4-16x40 scope mounted on it but the best thing I have done for this rifle is the GRT trigger. They are a bargain for the money. If you've already spent $500 consider another $35 for this trigger. I don't target shoot this rifle it is a hunter only so after putting about 3000 rds down range I use lighter weight guns for plinking.

This is my last post on GTA. I want to thank all those, especially Roadworthy, who helped me with my XL 1100 problems I was having. I am not sure why but the moderator "ShakySarge" has warned me on getting close to using profanity which I completely disagree with and find his accusation uncalled for. Yes I have read "rule 6" and if criticizing Chinese workmanship or refusing to buy the replacement trigger was the cause of the warning then let us all restrict our opinions to praise and wonder and bury your negatives views. Any bad experiences you better keep to yourselves else you might get "warned"! My apologies if I have offended anyone.
To " ShakySarge" if you have the authority, please discontinue my membership in this forum. Thank you,,,,Grackle
