16 to 18 grain or even 20+ grain .22 pellets acceptable?

I'm debating trying some heavier pellets in a 24" barrel 2289 setup with a FT piston and ported valve. Currently I'm shooting the RWS Super H-points which are 14.2 grain and the gun loves them. Not much holdover between 45 and 60 yards.
Just wondering if I could get more FPE down range with a heavier pellet or if I'll just suffer from a lot of holdover and reduced FPS.
I have no idea currently what my FPS is at 15 pumps with these pellets. Plan to finally try Chrono Connect Mobile Pro this weekend having installed it months ago.
Have considered something only slightly heavier like the H&N Terminators at 16.36 since they seem to have a similar shape to the H-point which work so well.

For longer range, maybe try some dome heads. They tend to have a much better BC then do hollowpoints. Maybe try JSB Exact Jumbos @ 15.89g.

I have not tried them out farther than 30 yards but I picked up a couple tins of the Ruger pointed 16.9g .22 pellets and they in my 1322 14.5"
barrel do slightly better than the 14.3g CPHP.
I am zeroed for 20 yards at 10 pumps and instead of hold over I add 2 pumps per 5 yards and it works to keep me right on...
with the 16.9g pellets I just use 12 pumps at 20 yards and add the same two pumps and it still works.
The 1322MLT 13xx/66 18.75" barrel hybrid works the same.
The 1322XLT 22" barrel just needs one added pump per 5 yards with 14.3g pellets and the 16.9g pellets except at 30 yards I add 2 pumps.
I still have not gone out of town to check 40-60 yard performance.
It does take just a little extra juice to get near the same trajectory but the payoff is on mine any ways a little more fpe at the target.
So if you are already at max power I think you would have about an 1-1.5" of hold over at 40 yards to use 16-18gr pellets imo...

Cool thanks guys. Going to try HN Spitzkugel and the Air Arms Diablo domed both at or near 16 grains. Figure domed or pointed aerodynamics are a bit better than hallow points which will help a bit with holdover too.

Try a sampler pack. I picked up one from JSB and with 13-25g pellets. Money well spent!

Just looked at that too. Can play with really heavy rounds in that kit!

Yep! and, as much as I've read about the really heavy ones being for high powered rifles, they work well in my 1322 (10-15yds) and man do they bring the pain!

X2 on getting good dome pellets for your best accuracy at range. If when you chrony your rifle, I'd quess you won't see an appreciable FPE difference in the heavier pellet, at 25+ yard range. Even from the muzzle, I'd say you won't see much difference. If you want a flatter shooting rifle, stay on the lighter pellet. 14g domed pellets are efficient.

there is one other possible issue and that is with the slight increase in fpe it could tip the balance of the barrel to a harmonically active freq
and cause accuracy probs but I doubt it...
but the higher the fpe and the skinnyer/whippier the barrel... and these are whippy imo past 18" or so...
hey If you shoot some 10-20-30-40 yard groups without changing aim point and let me know zero distance with CPHP we can estimate your
fps.

My 2289's like a few of the very heavy pellets, unfortunately I did not note which ones as they were to expensive.
I can say that they like 21 grain .22 cal miniball (be careful that it is true .22 cal miniball, most .22 black powder store bought miniball is somewhere between .23 and .24 in size). I learned this in molding miniball for .22 cal revolvers and trying it in the 2289.
Though yes the heavier pellets will carry more energy down range, and they will have a lower velocity so a greater arc. If you need more energy at distance this is a big advantage, though you will have to learn to compensate with hold-over a bit more than with lower weight pellets.
I generally use 14.2 to 14.9 grain traditional diablo shaped pellets, and sometimes 21 grain miniball with my 2289, and the same pellets or slightly oversized miniball with my Daisy 22X.
