1322 or 2289? Trying Again

I will try this post again from another computer and internet connection as my initial attempt posted the subject and not the message.
I am new to air guns and am interested in a Crosman 1322 or 2289, as both are being sold now as packages with stocks for about the same price. I've read the specs and have seen some videos. I want to do some target shooting and maybe some very small game. I intend to put a steel breech and scope on and do some polishing of sear and trigger assembly and cleaning of the barrel as I understand these maintanence items are beneficial to better operation. So please advise if there is a significant advantage starting with one or the other.
Also, I would like recommendations for a compact AO scope for +/- 30yrds, under $100

I only have experience with the 1322 so that's what my two sense is about...with the 2289 it does come with a longer barrel, which does improve accuracy. There are probably more aftermarket parts and mods for the 1322 then any airgun ever made, even though i am sure most of the parts interchange, I couldn't tell you which ones.
How much you would be modifying it depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. There is nothing wrong with a 1322 right out of the box for a shooter who is a casual plinker. It's a fun gun with decent accuracy and not finicky regarding maintenance - a couple drops of pell gun oil once in a while and it will last a long time. If you want more out of the gun then just to shoot at cans every few months, you might want to modify it. You mentioned the trigger so let's start with that.
There are dozens of different sears, triggers, roller triggers, spring guides etc. you can buy and you can easily spend $100 or more on the stock trigger. There are better and cheaper ways to go then this. After researching and trying some things, i just gave up on the stock trigger (which is, admittedly awful) and just did the Marauder pistol, trigger group mod. All this is, is you buy an entire trigger group from Crosman, modify your hammer with JB weld, and replace the stock trigger group with it. It's been done by lots of people, including me, and the difference in the trigger action is like night and day! To use the word "dramatic" would be understating it. The marauder pistol trigger is far superior in smoothness, consistency and pull to any modification you can do to the factory trigger. As far as the cost, the trigger group is $45 shipped from Crosman. JB weld for the hammer, add another $6 and you're done spending money on your trigger for good!
On other forums there are posts on exactly how to do the mod, including one written by me. It isn't hard to do at all. So if you want to modify the trigger and not waste money, I'd consider that mod before throwing money at a trigger that can;t be fixed.
After that, definitely get a flat top piston and valve. I got mine from airgunsmith. It is brass and comes with 6 o rings plus a bottle of their special oil. I avoided delrin, which is bascially plastic, people say the rod tears through the piston head eventually. I'd stick to a metal piston.

Thanks for the good information. I went ahead and ordered a 2289 as
part of the "Doomsday" package. I did read from someone who got one
and they said it did not come with the longer barrel. I will see what I get
but I ordered it through Walmart so if it is not as pictured I would not have
a problem in returning it. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

my 2289g came in today, the barrel is 2 inches longer than standard 13xx guns, but not the 14 inches as the old 2289's(thats pictured on the box).highly accurate out to 40 yards.when pumping...dont hold the stock ,it will wear out the groves the frame locks into.

I chronyed the 12" barrel .22 backpacker that came in yesterday. 10 pumps 475fps and 12 pumps 494fps. That's with CHP 14.3's out of the box.

you made the right choice
the longer barrel makes adding barrel accecssories easier
the wider pump arm makes pumping easier and no pinched fingers
plus the cool backpackpack bandaids and other stuff makes $75 well spent.i got an email from wally's saying $.97 shipped to my door until Christmas

Since you went with the 2289, the longer barrel its something you can take advantage of in a couple ways.
The first thing is you get a little bit of increase in FPS with the longer barrel. As a flat top piston and you will get even more.
And if you are looking for noise reduction i can recommend a shroud for the muzzle. I bought a six inch shroud from Mellonair for $20. And a12 inch barrel to go with it. The shroud is solid with no baffles but the reduction in noise is significant. Kind of like the difference between ten pumps and two pumps.

I was having the same trouble deciding what to get a 1322 or a 2289. I just ordered one of each.
