Helga was escorted to my office yesterday after being dropped off by brown. I ordered from Airguns of Arizona exactly one week earlier. Before I review the gun let me say this was my first dealing with AoA and I hope it will not be my last. They are great to deal with. My ONLY complaint with the whole transaction was I had to call them 24 hours after placing the order to get a tracking number. I prefer receiving an email notice that I placed an order or when something is charged to my credit card. Other than that, the whole order process and handling was superb. Thanks Darren!!!!
Helga was securely double boxed.
They had a nice "Thank You" on the outside of the box as well as inside. They did a thorough inspection before packing her up to send her to me.
Okay, securely packaged, she arrives in my office. First impression upon opening the boxes, she has style. The fit and finish are what I expected from a totally hand crafted piece. She has a deep even blue and the wood is fantastic. Unwrapping her I discover she is a bit on the hefty side. She weighs in at over 9 pounds even BEFORE I add 1.5lbs of glass and mount. But I personally like a heavy gun. A holdover from my powder burners, I believe a heavy stock will help absorb any recoil. And also reduce firing cycle noise.
I looked her over top to bottom before installing the 5 bolt 1 piece high scope mount. Then saddled up a BSA 6-24X44 SWF scope.
I took her out to my improvised shooting range here at work and set up at about 30 yards from my targets. It took 3-4 shots to get her on paper but after that, she nailed a 1/2" group with ease. This is my first underlever springer. The cocking lever is released by a spring loaded push button. The lever locks in place with a very positive snap.
I'm guessing the cocking effort to be around 35lbs or so, not bad at all. The loading chamber is quite large, and that is a plus for a big fingered guy like me.
My trigger pull felt a little more than the 2 lb 10 oz that Paul Capello reported in his video review. But the Record trigger has a very nice adjustment screw. I didn't have a small screwdriver handy so I'll tweak it later and get it where I want it. Gene says he has his set to just over 1 lb. But the trigger is a VERY positive one and you know when it's going off. It is a leading industry trigger assembly.
Once I got her home, I set out several targets. I used 4' X 3/16 metal rods and some wooden dowels. I popped some heavy foam practice golf balls on top of these and set them out at a variety of distance from 12 yards to 58 yards.
I was shooting sitting down on my deck with a folded towel on the rail to prop my forearm on. I didn't even bother with the 12 yard target, I went for the 22 yard instead. Dead center first shot. Hmmm...nice.
Second shot was to the 33 yard one. Dead center first shot. Hmmm...still nice.
At the 40 yard target, I decided to give it a 1 Mil-dot adjust. Dead center 1 shot. Hmmm....starting to get VERY impressed.
Scoping on the 52 yard ball, I gave it 1.5 Mil-dot. One shot, dead center. NOW I'm getting scared. This thing is deadly accurate.
Glassing the 58 yard ball, I kept the same 1.5 Mil-dot and let the CPHP fly. The ball fell off the dowel. WOW....
I walked the range and when I got to the final target ball, I reached to pick it up to discover I had hit 1/4" below the ball and severed the dowel.
I reset the ball onto the dowel, went back to my firing position and gave it 2 Mil-dots. One shot, one kill. Dead center.
Not everything with Helga was fantastic. I found fit and finish superb, she was a little hefty (my preference though), cocking cycle was great and she is one consistant and accurate frauline. I did have a few things I would change on her though. First off I am not happy with the safety. It is a very positive and excellent feeling safety. The problem I have with it is you cannot re-engage it with your thumb. To get it back on safe, you HAVE to recock the gun. I don't like putting my hand up near the muzzle of a loaded and cocked gun. I would redesign that if it were up to me.
I also got some surprising spring twang. I really didn't expect that from this gun. It's not that bad but I did notice it. I will most definiately open her up and add a little spring tar to tone that down.
Final comments, I am VERY glad I bought her and added her to my stable. I can see us making many fond memories together before passing her on to my grandson. Before she arrived, I had NEVER seen a springer out of the box shoot like this. She can make a bad shooter look good, a good shooter look like a pro and a pro look like an Olympic champion. She liked CPHP from Wally World so she is not going to be finicky about a diet. THAT is a plus in my book. She was worth EVERY penny and more. If you get a chance to own one, DO IT!!! You won't regret it.
Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Great review, Dave. Aren't you a little low on your quoted price for a gun that you don't plan on selling? Be careful, someone may come along and want a proven winner!!! LOL

Dave, I'm real happy for you and not at all surprised that you so easily fell in love with the 97. I shot Gene's/David's last year at the fun shoot and was some impressed.Hard not to like a rifle that just puts a hole where you want it everytime. I found that the JSB 8.44 gr pellets outshot the CP's in my HW-77 and you might too so give them a try. Have fun.

Thanks Dave. I just placed an order for some JSB and Beeman rounds.
I can't imagine her getting any better but we'll see.
Can't hurt to experiment.

Great blow by blow objective review Dave. Kinda thought you would like that Fraulein..
Back off the gold screw behind trigger blade to get what weight trigger squeeze you want.
Keep us posted on any further positives and negatives...

Nice review, I have a HW97K in .22, and can echo what you said about the gun. Mine was also a little twangy when I got it, but that went away after about 400 rounds. Power on mine is a little lower than I expected, 675 fps with Premiers, but it's so consistent and accurate that I can put up with the less than expected velocities.

Last evening, after receiving my order from PA, I was able to test some different ammo. I tested JSB Exact Match Diabolo, Beeman Crow Magnum and Beeman Silver Sting. I tested at 30 yards for groups. It appears Helga does not have a finicky diet. She grouped okay with all of these but I still get one holer or clover leafs at 30 yards with CPHP. She seems to like those best of all. Kinda surprised me and a pleasant surprise too. This ammo is less expensive and can be had locally. The other rounds would have to be ordered. But I also found out that one of my Winchester 1000's LOVES the JSB Exact and made 1/2-3/4" groups at 30 yards. So I can still use the 2 tins I bought.
