Disappointed with the Winchester M14

Got the M14 today, boy what a disappointment. I preordered from amazon way back in march and was excited to find out it had shipped. it came in a box and when I opened it was immediately bummed. I knew it was going to be "composite" plastic, but had the stock been solid plastic I would have excepted it better. Instead, they were hollow and the gun was very light and hollow feeling. The plastic stock halves looked like they were superglued together with too much glue and the seams looked like they had glue smeared on them.
I should have known it was going back at that point. But hey, Crosman's M417 surprized the heck out of me after I shot it. the clip is a flip style with an eight round rotary on each end. it is all plastic and was difficult to get it into the magazine. the detent/release button would not engage. I shot all head style crosman premiers, daisy's flat, hollow point, and pointed, crosman's match wadcutters, crosman pointed hunting, tried beeman wadcutters, they would not fit, too long, and gamo diabolo wadcutters. My targets looked like i shot it with a shot gun. All over the place, 10 meters which is 16 feet, bench rested no less, and i thought, I paid $150 for this. Its on its way back.
Sorry to you replica lovers out there. this gun isnt even worth $50.

Sorry to hear that. Good thing you didn't get out to 33'....
I just noticed your avatar, that's a neat little survival unit, and I wish I woulda bought back in the 90s. Still some available, but the price is a little "proud".
What area/county in Ill.? Get up there from time to time.
Here's hoping the coaching change helps on the hoops recruiting for ya'll.

This is a real bummer... I couldn't wait to hear your thoughts on it. I almost pre ordered one! I'm really glad I waited now... Thanks for the review squally, you just saved me $150!

Just got mine today. I agree with Wally. I guess I was being overly optimistic. A lot of plastic wrapped around a Gamo pistol type firing mechanism, double ended rotary stick mag. Not even going to Chrono it. Very sensitive to pellet seating in the mags. First couple of groups weren't too bad about nickle size at 30'. then they started getting bigger up to 3" or so. Took a little more care on the next mag and came back down to nickle size( all from a bench rest). Moved back to 45' and then things went south. Best groups were 4" even with carefull pellet seating. Biggest disappointment was just about 40 shots before a noticeable drop in power. I guess I feel if they can sell the 1077 for 60 bucks than this is worth maybe another 15 to 20 for the extra plastic no more. Looks like a real wood stock from a PB M-14 could be modded to fit but then you would have a $200.00 plus 1077. Just for snicks I will try and clean the barrel this weekend and see if it makes any difference, but I think this one is going back. You can check out my first impressions in the post below.

Sometimes new products get released too soon, without sufficient tests run on them. This not worthy because then the consumer gets to be the beta tester. After Winchester gets enough returns they will probably implement some fixes and release "version 1.0b" or some such to indicate that some design changes have been made.

I'm more than happy with my slightly customized 2240.(long steel breech, tuned, etc) - inexpensive and shoots perfectly.

BTW, 10 meters IS approx. 33 feet, not 16 feet.
Darn! I had my eye on that rifle since it was first advertised. I'm a sucker for the replicas. But if it doesn't shoot straight, it's not worth having. Thanks for the review, I can cross that off my "must have" list.

Oops thanks for pointing that out!
10 meters is always on my brain, I was actually shooting at 5 meters which is 16 feet and some change. I was shooting in my basement hallway which is a perfect 5 meter range and was using NRA 5meter targets. The groups were so terrible I didn't bother measuring them.
I have red Ryder bb guns with better results.
