Title: What makes/models of bullet/pellet molds are currently available for .177?
Post by: supersonic on June 18, 2012, 02:20:58 PM
Not sure if this is the correct forum for such a question, but here it is.   I'd like to have a go at molding my own lead projectiles, and see how well they perform, compared to factory ammo.  First of all, I would like to have a mold that would do at least 4 or 5 .177 cal projectiles per pour.  As for the exact shape, that would pretty much depend on what is actually available.  But I would lean towards anything that produced sharp pointed, but relatively heavy rounds, with a hollowed-out back end.  But I would even be OK with something that was designed for making .17 cal powder burner rounds, if that is the only thing that is available.

Can anyone provide me with any leads (or links?) that would point me in the direction of what I am looking for?

I saw this:

I don't know anything about pellet making.  But google turned that link up.
But IMHO you are much better off just buying .177 pellets.  You can buy lots of pellets for the cost of the machinery.

Has anyone used one of these? Do you know the weight of the pellets?

that looks way too much like work.

I wouldn't care if it took an hour to make a pellet as long as they all had identical head diameters.

i bet it would fun as heck to spend a couple hours making pellets that way. I know i would like it anyways..  i like activities that require focus but are also relaxing at the same time

like shooting?  ha-ha!  yea, fun but too slow not to be frustrating.  i'd need the mold too, for sure.

I'm not sure about the weebly system, but I do like the idea that the corbin system uses dies that fit into standard reloading presses.  You could crank out pellets pretty quickly, but it looks like you need to use special lead wire, instead of being able to use any lead that you may have lying around.  And that also prevents you from being able to use lead/antimony alloys, which would allow you to increase the hardness of the pellets.  I think I would like to hear from those who have used it before I would be willing to spend the bucks on it though.  I'd also like to know what the weight of the pellets it produces is.

I don't have the patients to do that, just go to walmart and buy 3 tins or order 4 tins from pyramid air and you get the 4th one free. Good luck if you do make them yourself please post back and let us know how you did.

Being that I'm only like a mile from the nearest wm, that IS usually the way I go.  But only for the crosman pointed "spade" pellets, who's accuracy (from MY experience) is indisputable.   I was thinking that one could make pellets by pouring whatever scrap lead that might be lying around into a simple (and cheap) handheld multi-cavity mold.  But since they need to be individually swaged in a (expensive) press-mounted die, using lead wire that needs to be bought, it does not look to be very cost-effective.  I do kind of like the the cone-nosed semi-wadcutters made by the corbin die though.  I'd love to know what they weigh.

It looks like the weebly guy is coming out with a 5 at a time mold for .177 pellets. Even though you still have to swage them individually, from watching the video it still looked MUCH faster than his do it all one at a time mold. He sold the swage tool too.
