Threading an air rifle barrel.

Hi guys,
If I wanted to thread the muzzle of my barrel. How exactly would I go about it? Is it a simple matter of getting the correct Tap & Die set and begin cutting the threads? Also my barrel is exactly .50
15
inches in diameter at the muzzle. Is that to small to thread? Lastly, what are the negative affects of threading the barrel? Will it mess up the harmonics, and ruin it's accuracy?

Hey Pellgunfun,
If you are trying to install a screw-on muzzle brake or noise suppressor it would best to use a lathe to cut the threads
Given the questions you're asking, I would either take your barrel to a gunsmith (or machinist) to have this done or buy a slip-on version requiring only two set screws
Cutting a 1/2" thread using a hand die can be tricky especially if your barrel is slightly oversized. If the thread isn't exactly perpendicular to the barrel, the brake/suppressor will screw on at a slight angle and nick the pellet. Believe me, its not worth the hassle
I only say this because prior to buying my metal lathe, I tried doing this by hand. I have a lot of experience cutting threads, but just couldn't keep the set-up Tru enough to work. The tight tolerances on the Air Stripper would not forgive my slop
My Two Conservative Cents...................

anything less then true will cause a big problem...even when making LDC things has to line up 100% precise. Or else you groups will be all over the place.

I threaded the barrel on my s200. I sent it to a smith to have done, was right about the $60 range. You will need to make sure you have enough meat on the barrel to thread first.

Yeah something you don't want to DIY for your first time on an expensive rifle.

What kind of airgun is it ? , they do make slip ons with set screws that work well with out taking the chance of ruining a barrel. David

It's a BAM B50.
Not what I would consider an "expensive" air rifle. But then again.... on my super tight budget they are all expensive to me. Hehehe...
I was just wondering if it was possible to DIY and save a few bucks. Just in case I found an air stripper I wanted to try that wasn't a slip-on. I've found a few videos on the subject since I posted the question. Does appear to need a good deal of precision.
As woogie_man as already pointed out, the Barrel is .50 inches so there probably isn't enough "meat" on the barrel to work well anyways. Was just considering possibilities. Thanks for the input guys. Of course I could always re-barrel, but that would be an even bigger expense:-)

Hey Pellgunfun,
There IS enough meat. Take it to a gunsmith to cut the thread. Those air strippers work by being perfectly aligned with the bore.
The stripper doesn't have enough thread to bore out and slip on with set-screws.
IMHO the gunsmith is cheap vs. the mess you will get in by DIY.
