Title: Umarex Octane .25 cal conversion update
Post by: smythsg on December 22, 2013, 02:03:27 PM
Fedex finally got my .25 pellets here today so I had a
chance to run a few across the chrony with some interesting results:

JSB Exact King Diabolo 25.39 grain was a high of 701fps and a low of 689fps,
generally hovering around 699-700fps range.

Gamo Rockets at 20.8 grain was a high of 787fps and a low of 747fps, generally
hovering around 760-770 range.

H&N Field Target Trophy at 19.91 grain was a high of 800fps and a low of 775fps
hovering around 785-795 range.

The .25 barrel that I installed from Mike Melick has no sound suppressor at all so the gun is
definitely not as back yard friendly as the stock .22 Octane, so my shots were limited. Will do some
additional shooting tomorrow weather permitting. Chrony measurements were at the
muzzel and I did not try to shoot for accuracy at this time. All in all I am
pretty pleased with what I see so far, and .25 pellets seem like cannon balls
compared to .22 cal... :-)

That is pretty sweet.  I had thought these new gas ram guns were probably copies of the xs25 and xs28 with a new piston and trigger design.  Previously you couldn't do a gas ram in these because the trigger mechanism relied on a rod in the center of the piston.   I am curious as to what the innards of these guns look like.

Mr. Pellet Hunter, there is an Umarex Octane group that is very active on Yahoo. There are many pictures including a complete series on the trigger mechanism. Try the following link:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/umarexoctane/. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/umarexoctane/.) I think the Octane is a clone from the Ruger family of rifles which are themselves related to the XS28 family. ( I think they are all made in the same factory in China)

Today was a mild, sunny North Georgia afternoon, so took the .25 Octane out to the woods for a bit of target shooting. My first try with the stock scope was disappointing, with pellets seemingly flying in all directions. Replaced the stock scope with a Centerpoint mil-dot and everything settled down nicely. I wasn't bench shooting in the woods, but sitting or resting against trees, the bottom of drink cans at 40 yards was just too easy. Backing up to 50 yards was a bit more challenging with the wind (gusting to 20 mph), but I hit many more than I missed. The Octane seems to like the Field Target Trophy 19.91 grain pellets. I did not carry the Exact King 25.39 grain pellets with me on this outing, but maybe will have a chance to shoot them tomorrow.

The gun did not seem particularly hold sensitive, and when I did my part correctly, I was very pleased with the accuracy. I don't do too much paper punching, but I convinced myself that the Octane in .25 will be a capable hunter easily out to 50 yards and beyond.

I think the gun is capable, not so sure that I am... ;) It would require some trigger work (too heavy for serious target shooting) to get that kind of accuracy consistantly, but on a good day I wouldn't rule it out from a three shot group from the bench. I don't do too much bench shooting, so generally not too focused on groups. Most of my shooting is off hand in the woods with a tree for support if I am lucky.

Just found a clearance Octane Elite on Midway USA in .17 going to take the .25 caliber barrel off of my Ruger Air Magnum and try it on the Octane Elite.  The Air Magnum throws hard but very inaccurate, had the .25 on an older 1st Generation Octane and 50 yd. desert cottontails were no problem but after 4 years and thousands of shots the power was dropping off.  Would like to replace the gas piston and rebuild it but don't know where to start.  I'm good with the Ruger springers, Air Magnums or Targis, I immediately order a new spring, piston seal and breach seal, replace all that and use Mobil 1 synthetic for the spring grease.  Got a Targis off of Ebay the pellets striking the ground just a few yards from the muzzle, destined for the junk pile that now is a 65 yd. hunter and the smoothest break barrel shooter I have.

Good luck with the swap Karl, I learned a lot when I did my conversion. Haven't owned a breakbarrel in a good while now, but those were the days.. 8)
