Title: Gamo Socom Extreme .22
Post by: trekkerx on May 08, 2011, 06:17:56 PM
I ordered the .22 Socom Extreme from PA last Thur. & got it on Sat..I did the normal things you do when you get a new rifle.Cleaned the barrel with Goo-Gone,tightened all the stock screws, adjusted the trigger the best I could with a stock Gamo trigger, bore sighted scope.Ohh & I also filled thr stock with expanding foam. The scope broke on the first 5-shots.Reticle turned sideways.I ran to Wal-Mart got the Center-Point 4-16X40 got it mounted & started shooting JSB`s 14.3 grn..They avg.850 & grouped well at 35 yrds. Then I tried the 16 grn. Predator Poly Mags & they shoot a avg of 849 & grouped better then JSB`s.1 FPS slower then the JSB`s over 10 shots. Now I`m trying to figure this out.How does a pellet weighting almost 2-grn. heavier shoot the same speed?Anyway I like the rifle. The palm swell is very large but after a little bit of shooting I didn`t even notice it anymore.Well here`s some pics. with stock scope.

The fit of the pellet can effect fps and accuracy. Nice shooter and I wish that Gamo would start selling the Socom stocks. Ed

I really like the stock on socom ...,loose pellets in the breech is not a good thing cause it wobbles inside and wont catch the groves makin it less accurate and takes energy away from amount of time spent in the barrel as to a tighter pellets will spin touching all groves in the barrel that its more accurate and will keep energy ...i dont know if it made sense but from my experinces with ags i have notice the tightness of pellets in the breech being much more accurate as to a looser pellet being the same weight.jorge

My cfx does the same with Predators and JSB exacts.  It hates and man I mean hates the Exacts but can literally one hole the predators not only that but it shoots the Predators faster than the Exacts.  I just don't shoot them cause they are a little heavy for my cfx and she just shoots so well with cphps.  OHH! By the way that is a good gun you got there, I was really looking into one until I got my Dynamax.

Ed's right...as always.
I like that "log look" on your gun tray.  Nice job!

My go to pellets are Jsb`s.I do have several cans of Cphp but I don`t have a rifle that the Crosman pellets shoot better then Jsb`s .No matter what caliber Jsb`s shoot out of my rifles better.I started using the 15.9 gr. in the Socom they avg. 830 fps. There also alot cheaper to shoot then the Preds.I wish the Crosman pellets shot better cause they are cheaper.I have been at Gene`s house shooting the Socom for the last 2-days.He`s been trying to get everything ready for the Fun Shoot this weekend.I have got all the targets broke in well out to about 75 yards. If you want fresh targets you betterr bring them with you lol.Anyway the Gamo Socom in .22 is fun to shoot.I thought it would shoot harder then what it is shooting but overall it shoots accurate. It`s not out shooting my Walther in speed but is right on par in accuracy.Love the stock on it now.My father built the gun tray out of wood that was just laying on the ground out in the woods & some plywood. The bottom has a drawer in it & a tray up top.

I hope this gun works out for you better than it did for me. I loved the look of the gun, but as It broke in, it got so inconsistent not better as you would think. I tried 9 different pellets in that bad boy, it liked match the best but it still was not good enough. One day it was shooting "decent groupings" and the next day (changing nothing) it would be all over the place. And by all over the place I mean 1 foot groupings at 30 yards Yes I typed 1 foot groupings(somteimes 18 inches). Next day(still changing nothing) BAM! decent groupings. This was happening for about three weeks, I was giving her the benefit of the doubt. All shooting done from bench rest. So needless to say I took her back and ordered what I wanted to begin with. ;D

Magnum airguns can be a handful at times and finding the right pellet to power ratio is a must. They can even be more hold sensitive then mid-powered shooters. I receive magnums in for tunes often and when I receive the .177 versions I always suggest that the customer look for heaver lead since light lead becomes unstable at the speed's that magnums push it. I always suggest .22 Magnums and another thing to check on yours is the crown. Many of the newer Gamo's have a threaded end for a shroud or brake and if you look at the end the rifling does not come all the way to the end. It's a smooth bore for about and inch. Ed

I have been shooting the 15.9 gr. Jsb`s in the Socom.I shot the &^^& out of it at Gene`s Fun Shoot this weekend. The biggest problem is it sounds like a bucket of bolts was dropped from a 10-story building. And sometimes on returning the barrel after loading a pellet it feels rough & like it`s grinding on something.I talked with Gene about sending it to Shadow for a tune.He said come on back & we will tune it up.So it looks like I will go back to Gene`s on Wed.I`m getting pretty good groups with mine in .22 cal. bustin paint balls out to about 55 yards.

Tim, that is a nice rifle and I am an eye witness that it shot accurately. If you get it tuned I'll predict that the grinding and crunching noises will go away and I won't be surprised if the velocity goes up too. You'll be glad you did.
