Title: What happened to the Pump-Assist Benjamin 392?
Post by: neric on August 29, 2010, 04:53:18 PM
Why did Pyr.Air discontinue the Pump-Assist modified Benjamin 392?

The company doing the conversions quit making 'em.  http://airchanics.com/index.html (http://airchanics.com/index.html)

Yah
They looked like a very good idea, but I was pretty sure that they would not last due to low demand from the cost.
A pity.

That linkage look kinda flimsy to me. If you find a late model Benjamin to be hard to pump, all you need to do is a simple valve mod and the pump effort is cut way down.

Can you tell me a little more detail of the simple valve modification?

And does it compromise the power range?

And lastly,,,does the GRT III trigger fit on the Benjamin 392?

(I don't want to bother asking Charlie, I did read his website of what this trigger will fit:  Benjamin Classic .22  BNS-AR-004, but from reading on PyrAir I couldn't tell if the 392 is the same thing as what Charlie was referring to)

Thanks for all your great info.

At the risk of having this thread moved to the airgun mods gate    ;D, the valve work entails taking the valve apart, shortening the check valve about 1/8" and putting it back in the front of the valve, dropping a light spring of appropriate diameter and length in on top of the check and then dropping a small washer into the valve. The washer must be small enough to fit in the valve, but large enough to catch on the ledge machined into the valve further down near the check. Cut two or three coils off the main valve spring and put the valve back together. Here's a link below with more details. I find the rifle to be easier to pump with no loss in power, actually a bit of a gain in power with these changes. I have several pumpers and have not had the nerve to mess with the valves, but this one is so easy I decided to do it.
The GRTIII trigger does NOT fit the 392. It does fit some Benjamin springers, but none of the pumpers. The link below will show some trigger mods too for the 392/397 rifles.

Mechanically, that mod seems to be very effective, but it really cranks up the noise levels. I remember that in my glory days with my '60 Sheridan, I had put some thin rubber strips on the pump channel to greatly reduce the slapping sound at the end of the stroke. Don't know if there would be a way to reduce the chatter from the linkage and make it more hunt friendly?

That's a definite NO on the GRT-III in the Benjamin.
However, I have to wonder why anyone would even want to do that, since I consider the Benjamin/Sheridan pumpers to have really excellent triggers, especially considering the price.
Nice and crisp, not too heavy, and very little creep at all.
