Was driving to the barber shop yesterday and there he was,, a woodchuck on the side of the road. There was a pile of wood chips next to the remains of a large tree that the highway dept. recently cut down and is chipping up and the the G-hog had a huge wad of wood chips in his mouth and was waddling back to his den. My guess is he's using the wood chips as bedding for his burrow.
Anyway, it's the first G-hog I've spotted this year..... guess it's time to get the .22 Condor out and make sure the scope is still sighted in

You always see Groundhogs first and usually early Jeff! I see them late, usually in April or May. And that's OK. I want them to breed and give me more targets later in the summer
I have seen a couple of Groundhogs over the years pick up wood chips and grind their teeth with them before taking them back to their burrow. Wood chips are like chew toys for G-hogs. That's one reason they like burrowing under my tool shed. They chew on the wood of the shed to keep their teeth from getting out of control, especially in the Spring, because their teeth have been growing all winter during hibernation. The shed is full of chew marks all around, some 12-14" high. It looks pretty bad actually, but it attracts G-hogs so why fix it?
It's the Maurader's turn this year if I get any new ones to move in.

That's great. They don't usually show here until about Apr when we start hanging in the 50s.

The temp was 51 degrees when I saw that G-hog so I guess 50 degrees must be right around the "magic" temperature to get them active after the long winter.....
As a follow up,, yesterday afternoon I took a ride over the the farm where I do most of my G-hog hunting and while I didn't see any above ground I did see several burrows with freshly dug earth piled outside the holes so it appears that they are indeed starting to "come alive"
First nice, sunny, warm day I get I plan on doing some shooting with the .22 Condor and .25 M-rod to make sure they're ready for some G-hog hunts

I know you'll get some again this year bro and haven't spotted any here. Still alittle frosty and the den holes are undisturbed. Ed
